The Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing offers a three-year program which leads to a diploma at graduation and to eligi- bility tor examination by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners. The curriculum at the school aims to give the student a sound tounda- tion in the skills, knowledge and understandings in the palliative, curative, and preventive aspects of nursing, as Well as to encourage and aid the de- velopment ot a healthy, well-rounded person. The program ot study is planned to utilize the basic scientific courses ot the Iohnstown Iunior College affiliation program as a background on which to build professional knowledge. Hence, the first six months, or preclinic period, is devoted 'chiefly to the study of the physical and biological sciences and to the basic principles of nursing care. The clinical period is divided into terms during which the student studies in the various clinical areas, such as medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatry and public health nursing. Lectures, nursing classes, group conferences and experience are planned to give the student an understanding of the total care of the patient. Emphasis is placed on the cause and prevention of illness, both from the individual and community standpoint, on mental as Well as physical health, and on the social implication of illness. Experience in the care ot medical, surgical, obstetric, and pediatric patients as Well as certain special services, is provided at C. V. M. H. Ex- perience is psychiatric and tuberculosis nursing is provided through affiliations.
