' 1 RHEUMATIC FEVER CLINIC Beat - rest, beat - rest, beat - rest. What music is this? Samba? No, the rhythm belongs to the normal pumping of the heart. Today, we realize that there is an increase in sick hearts among the old- ? er people in OU1' fClSf-mOV- Dr. C. A. Beerman and Dr. W. H. Winey direct Rheumatic Fever -Clinic ing age. What would be more distressing than to save for twenty years for that voyage to Europe and then find a dam- aged heart on a physical examination before sailing. Well, the verdict of heart trouble in most cases does not mean death overnight. Thousands of persons with heart disease are living com- fortable, happy, useful lives right now because they are co-operating with their doctors in giv- ing their hearts a chance, Many of them may live as long as they could reasonably expect to live without heart trouble. Some of them even have a chance of complete recovery. Our physicians believe that cz well-informed cardiac is one who not only has a knowledge of heart facts but of living with his handicapped heart as well. The philosophy of living recom- mended may be difficult for those people who have always been high-strung, prone to work too hard or worry too much. Yet those who are willing to slow up their previous living pace-to go ahead with less speed, less haste, less worry, less fearg who accept the situation and adjust to it cheerfully, coaxing their hearts along without letting their impairment become an obsession- these are the people who have the best chance of a full, happy and prolonged existence DESPITE heart trouble. lf we have one eye to the future on HEART disease, we will realize the opportunity the heart-blood vessel 'icheck-up opens to us. We have now the power to forestall the onset of any heart condition-if we are examination-minded. The knowledge received from tests and examina- tions reveals the true secrets of the heart. Dr. Meyer Bloom is head of our Department of Cardiology with Dr. Philip Ashman and Dr. Anderson as fellow physicians. Dr. Meyer Bloom and Eleanor Gredeslcy 1
