Lund supervises anesthetists H Mft, Awmt, DEPARTMENT OF ANESTHESIOLOGY When We look again through the microscope into Memorial Hospital, our most enchanting view is that of the department of anesthesia. The sight of nurse anesthetists, under medical super- vision, administering inhalation and intravenous anesthesia to surgical patients presents a fascinating picture. The peaceful sleep of the patient, immediately before and during the surgical operation, tends to add to our amazement. Without the knowledge of the X-ray, the fluoroscopic screen, and radium, progress in the field of internal medicine would end. A stellate or comminute fracture in a bone would not be located Without the vivid, precise picture of x-ray. A View of the body's internal organs in activity Would not be possible Without the fluoroscopic screen. Certain malignant tu- mors would not be detected or treated Without these discov- eries of man. If We take one glance at our department of radiology, we Will realize that this oasis of health offers modern facilities for diagnostic Work, and opens opportunities for roentgen and ra- dium therapy. The knowledge received from the great scientists, Dr. Roent- gen and Madame Curie, has a definite application in the field of radiology at our hospital.

Of the many departments in our hospital, the clinical labora- tory plays a leading role in seeking and in finding scientific reason or truth. This adjunct facility, under the capable direction oi Dr. Gerald C. Leary, is a priceless aid in supporting and sup- plementing the clinical findings of our physicians. Our clinical laboratory has provision for blood and plasma banks, basal metabolism examinations, bacteriology, parasitology, serology, hematology, and biochemistry. In many ot these sciences the microscope reveals our un- seen friends ancl toes. With this weapon the physician can say, Good-bye, Mr. Germ.
