The treatment of the person who has tuberculosis is just as im- portant as the treatment of the disease. Affiliation student nurses develop an appreciation that the patients are people with a past, present and future. Their horizons broaden as community agencies become more than Words or initials, and as rehabilitation programs become the total service rendered to the patient. The hospital and the community come into focus and probably for the first time in their lives, the students glimpse the cyclorama of human relationships and activi- ties rather than the isolated seg- ment which has composed their professional World. Indeed, this affiliation at Butler has been a for- ward move-all to the advantage oi our school as a Whole. PQ If ll X, ,Y y . 4 1' 1 I I - 1 t Ig ' 13 fryui . : it .pl ,V . 4. ,. W5 ,W A H ' M X

There is a pressing need for more gen- eral knowledge of early symptoms of mental disease, for a recognition of the value of early treatment, and for a more hopeful outlook and open manner of deal- ing With psychiatric conditions. Alexis Carrel sums up progress in this direction: Today it is certain that health is improving. Not only has mortality de- creased but each individual is handsomer, larger and stronger. However, the long- evity of the men proficient in all kinds of sports is not greater than that of their ancestors. We know that the products of modern education need much sleep, good food and regular habits. They do not en- dure the mode of existence in the larger cities, the confinement in offices, and the worries of business. They easily break down. Perhaps the triumphs of hygiene, medicine, and modern education are not so advantageous as We are led to be- lieve. S.. . E a s a
