Although not edu- cated academically to be a teacher, she taught us by example how one ought to live: Handicapped, yet never complainingg uncertain of tomor- row, yet never complaining, suffering discomfort from a terrible dis- ease, yet never complaining. She listened to the problems of students sent to the office, listened to the problems of teachers in the office, listened to the problems of administrators in the office. Perhaps from the memory of Irene, we can see ourselves more clearly and put our problems in perspective, a perspective that you and this poet perhaps shared. Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance. -Kahlil Gibran Irene, you taught us an important lesson on how to live. May God make us good students as we look to your example. Amen.
