INDUSTRIAL ARTS The shop that has been in operation in Conemaugh High School has been Industrial Arts for all boys in the Junior High School. Hand tool processes involving selection, care and use of hand tools and ma- terials, followed by machine work, basic bench operations and ele- mentary lathe procedure. Also instruction is given in general finish- ing of projects. This Junior High School period is exploratory, pro- viding the student who wishes to live and work in our industrial civilization, with a general knowledge for his work in the future. 6.14: . in After this three year period of finding himself, the student then decides whether or not he wished to pursue the Academic, Commer- cial or Practical Arts courses. This period provides him with a more INDUSTRIAL ARTS specific preparation for his cnosen iield for the future. The student who chose Practical Arts is now given a broader knowledge in woodworking and is also introduced into the metal operations involi- ing the use of drill presses, metal lathes, and grinders. The industrial Arts department takes pride in the fact that the student who does learn from books easily, as well as the one who doesn't, is interested in the challenging problems of the Industrial Arts activities. These activities provide students with real life situations and offer a splendid opportunity to develop their ability and interests. The shop is one place where the Practical Arts students have developed their creative ability and appreciation for work. The influence of the shop reaches beyond the class room and extends into the home where already num- erous homework-shops have been set up, thereby developing whole- some leisure-time interests. Yes, of course you may, was the reply. Officers were elected, the rules of the club were made, and the second Thursday of each month was selected as the day for the meetings. Thus the Circle de Francais of 1944 and 1945 was begun. In the club meetings French and American customs were compared and contrasted. French games were sometimes played. Peggy Baumgardner Peggy-who comes to the rescue Truck Driver-plenty mad Charlotte Golden Alex Woloschuk The synopsis of the story is as follows: Jeff mistakes Peggy for the new maid, and Peggy, tired of selling hosiery and fond of children, agrees to stay and help out. But Lenore Hudson has just inherited a million dollars, and has commissioned Jeff to build her a new house-which she hopes he will eventually share with her. Hy, the little tomboy, whose passion is foot- ball hates Lenore because Lenore is building her house, on tneir football lot, and is starting to excavate the very day of the important football game. In an excruciating- ly funny scene, Hy puts a crimp in Lenore's plans, but Peggy shields Hy and takes the blame herself. Jeff flares up at her. Peggy thinks she doesn't have a chance com- peting with a girl who inherited a million dollars-and leaves. Then Jeff realizes how much Peggy means to him. Hy gets her football squad out and they bring Peggy back. Then Peggy, in her delightfully vague ibut not dumbl way, pulls a few tricks herself, which puts the million-dollar baby out of running. Peggy wins Jeff and they live happily together. OPERETTA THE GHOST OF LOLLYPOP BAY In presenting The Ghost of Lollypop Bay. the Music Department scored its biggest hit of the year. Full of laughs, scares ,and romance, this operetta in two acts ranks with those of previous years. It musical score was composed by Charles Wake- field Cadman, a native of Johnstown, who is very prominent in the field of music The plot of the story concerns a girls' summer camp on Lollypop Bay, and a boys' school established on the opposite side of the lake. Social relations between the camps are restricted. although Professor Flint, a bashful bachelor, and his boys, are accustomed to call on Miss Steel, a middle-aged spinster, and her girls, in a body. This is rather unsatisfactory to the boys and girls. A ghost idea is invented by the girls to provide an opportunity for them to become better acquainted with the boys. But the plan goes amiss when another, ghost appears on the scene. From then on the stage is overrun by ghosts. The story happily ends with the marriage of Professor Flint to Miss Steel and the consolidation of the two schools, making it a coeducational institution. Fine character conceptions and impersonations throughout the entire production reflected great credit upon all the performers. Here the students should learn the value of good manners and use them. They should respect and cooperate with each other for the good of all. Every student should understand the rights of democracy and to accept his own duty. To maintain and extend these liberties, youth must learn the full meaning of the human rights which democracy makes possible. Freedom imposes responsibilities. It requires personal character, and it is the result of individual and group action. Truth, justice, and re- spect for all must be understood and practiced. The first meeting was held in the library at three 0'clock on March sixteenth. Mr. Meckley, our director, explained to the members the meaning of the Student Council. At this meeting we organized. The rules for eligibility. as set up by a faculty committee, were as follows: scholarship cleanliness dependability leadership speech attitude courtesy punctuality Officers elected were: Edward 'Woolf Chairman Edmon lleyrooty Vice Chairman Mary Ilankowsky -A S9C1'9l21l'5' The Student Council is represented by twelve students from the senior high school and three from the junior high school. Every year it promotes activities for the sole purpose of securing funds to purchase sweaters and letters for its deserving members. It functions as a unit, not as a person. Membership is limited to those who earn the privilege because ot' their superior thinking and teamwork in basketball and football. The senior members usually have control of the offices. The coach and high school principal are its chief advisers. They help to solve the problems and other obstacles that hinder activities. This year's program to raise money was earned through various activities such as: Girl's Intramurals and dances. The Varsity C is especially grateful to the School Board, who has shown its appreciation and interest by donating to the Varsity C proceeds of the two alumni games. There will be nine members graduating and each will receive a sweater and a letter. Tom Grove and Mike Margetan, who were in- ducted into the armed services, also will be given sweaters. The nucleus of the team were the three seniors, Serb Gjurich, Al Wolochuk, and Slick Yewcic. The Iron Horses did a commendable job, especially during the first part ofthe season, by winning the first tive games. However, they lost two of the League games, one to Franklin and one to South Fork, which put them out of the iight for the League title. The t'. H.
