We leave this school, as young men and women, to face the trials and tribulations in a troubled world. Thirty-one members made up the class as we entered these portals in the fall of '57. As tradition had it, we were thoroughly initiated by the unperclassmen. At first we were a bit shy of the massive halls and rooms of CHS but we soon learned to take our nlace in classes and in the affairs of the student body. Elected to guide us for the first year was loris Zeck as president and Nr. Vincent as class adviser. Being musically inclined, the class found itself well recre- sented in all musical organizations. The boys of the class took an active part in all athletic competition, as did the girls. Soon after the, school year started we lost June Ahlfs, who moved to Minnesota, and Dick Chaon, who decided to quit school. The days went by quickly and soon with final exams over we found ourselves Sonhomores. The class as a whole did O. K. for themselves at the school nicnic which was held at Melgard Park in the fair city of Aberdeen. Returning to school in '38 we found that we had lost the following members of our class: Pyhllis Benson who transferred to Groton: Martin Cleven who decided that farm- ing beat searching for knowledge: Velma Chandler launched herself upon the sea of matrlmonyz and Bob Funk who just naturally quit. We found that we had gained one new punil, Frances Gross, who entered Conde High School from the Brad- ley institution of learning. During the course of the year, the class of '41 really steooed into the spotlight. Iblores dawek was elected queen of Spartan Gala Day. Hlchard'M1esen, Wayne Cleveland, and Don Uittman made the first eight on the CHS basketball team. Tommy Reardon and Wayne Cleveland made up two-thirds of a trumpet trio. However the achievement giving us the greatest satisfaction was winning the inter- class basketball tourney. The Sophomore team defeated the Senior team in the first game and went on to down the Juniors which clinched championship honors. Leonard Dahl was chosen class president with Mr. Sabaka as class snonsor. Spring came and with it several of the boy's fancies turned to the thoughts of . Among those affected we found Wayne Cleveland and Donald Dittman who have never completely Fecovcred. The picnic was held at Lake Kampeska and was de- clared a success from all angles. Our Junior year fcund us making the Seniors do our bid- ding. We gained one new student, Albert Fits, to give us a total of twenty six in our class. Iteque finish. 15 1 SENIOR PROPHECY One spring day in 1961, I found myself wandering around my old home town of Conde, South Dakota, and I decided that I would spend a few of my leisure hours in the way of renew- ing old acquaintances of my schoolhood days. After ponder- ing a whlle on which was the best way to find their where- abouts and their occupations I concluded that I should visit the school in which I had spent so many uleisuren hours. As I ascended the stairs of the old schoolhouse Cerected in 19055 I recalled a few of my many experiences there. My first intention was to look up some of the student: and teachers to see lf I couldn't gain some information from them. On second thought I decided that these students and teachers now wandering around the halls would not be able to recall with any degree of accuracy the whereabouts of my former schoolmates. I finally decided to visit the publish- ing room of the school's periodicals to see if I could find some record of my schoolday pals. While brouslng around the texts and guides I happened to run across the 1961 edition of WWho's Who in Conden. I was overjoyed at the possible discovery of the fate of the class of '4l. Before opening the cover I wondered if any of ghem had been successful enough to have their name in WWho's hon. ' I opened the cover and thumbed through the introductory pages. On turning the first page of the contents I found that Wayne Cleveland, one of my old school cronies, is em- ployed as a sausage stretcher in Flnklest1en's Frankfurter Filling Station. With experience gained in the Conde Meat market, it was very easy for Mr. Cleveland to make both ends mea . I also found that Irvin Simmons is now head of the Plastic Surgery Department at Useless University in Noluck, Iowa. He was going the rounds every night with his new ln- ventlon, a fur lined gravy bowl. This was designed to keep Sunday's left-over gravy warm for Monday's'd1nner. I found that Dolores Bawek is a feather dancer -with Dippy Dahl's swing band. Charlie always wanted to become president of a breakfast food company but corney was the closest that he could come to corn. Dolores was doing all right at her chosen profession and seems to have a great futhre in store for her Cprovidlng birds continue to-grow feathersi. I found that Erwin Cleven is making his fortune as a gold miner in the Coteau Hills east of Crandall. Red is mining alone and has already taken out enough gold to make Death Valley Scottie look like a piker. Kenny Hlldebrant, the Conde crooner, is now a singer in the Stork Club. If he continues to put all of his weight behind his work,. he ls liable to push ahead of the Master Singers. p 16 s tastes Kenny VanOrnum fduowed the footsteps of his illustrious uncle and is now the mayor of the thriving metropolis of Conde. He also has a sideline running a WTeachers Taxi Servicen. He gained his one and only wish by marrying and settling down to marital bliss with a redhead of the class of .420 Dortha Zeck, I-found, is billed as the Rye-Krisp girl. She has a figure like an hour glass and makes every minute count. As I ran my finger down the list of national figures, I found that Marian Bradley has gained fame with her invention of a combination rat trap and fruit Juicer. ' Bernice McPartland is billed as a torch singer in the Stork Club beside Kenny Hildebrant. Between them both they really put feeling into their work. Donald Dittman is now the manager of WOne Punchu Hite, the sensational figure of the boxing world. During the first few years of married life Donald found out all he needed to know about fights and fighters. Besides being a boxer, WOne Punchu is also a 10 second man. He has been able to run around the ring 20 times in one round without having a hand laid on him. Lucille Bertsch and Maurice Huber collaborated and ln- vented a flavored firecracker to blow holes in Swiss cheesw. From all angles it appears to be a popping success. As I ran my finger down the list of notable names, I came across the name of Tommy Reardon. I was eager to find what had brought his name into the list. I read on and found that he is in Mexico fighting bulls. In school I often wondered why Tommy, the son of a railroad man who d1dn't know a oow's horn from a trumpet, wanted to take Agriculture. I guess he knew what he was doing though be- cause in his Job he has to know what a bull looks like. If Thomas is as good at his work as he is at talking, Ferdinand hasn't a chance. Continuing on through the book I found that Dick Miesen is pulling thru life as a dentist in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan. As a hobby he raises giant bullfrogs in his back yard. This is a very profitable hobby as he has greenbacks on hand at all times. I was glad to find someone employed in the field of Journalism. This person I found to be Elvira Wettstein, who was writing the column NMy Dayn in the newspapers. T h 1 e column was formerly written by Mrs. Roosevelt but her hus- band was in the White House so long that she developed writer's cramp and had to retire. Reading on I found that Elv1ra's southern hospitality and southern ways helped her to become a success in life. Esther Bain came through with the brilliant idea of oiling feathers and is now president of 'Bain Squeakless Pillows Inc.U This industry employs thousands of men and from what I hear Esther is just tickled pink. J Dean Taylor, clover young fellow, gained his fame by ' D' 17 inventing an sir-conditioned wooden leg with an electric clock attachment-which enables him to keep step with the times. ' On the last page of the ad section, I found the ada vertisement of the Sheldon-Wahl-Geary Horseshoe Company: The girls are making their fortune shoeing nightmares. Lucille Dittman, I found, has been working on the bark of n dogwood tree. So far Lucille has perfected it to such an extent that it barks in three different tones: tenor, bass , and baritone. Last, but by no means least, I found Doris Zeck engaged in the fascinating business of dehaunting haunted houses. This is no reflection on Doris' character -as sheg merely enters h house and begins to sing, which has Proven very successful thus far. The take-off was stationed on the second floor of Conde High School. Moe Boulllon was president of the expedition and Mr. Schultz was the official adviser. We had our first example of school life when we went through the tortures of Misery Week, en- dowed on us by the upper clessmen. A weiner roast was spon- sored by the Freshmen and Sophomore classes on the 28th of September. The School hiked out to the second bridge on the rsilrosd tracks. During that year the crew lost one member Louis Tennis. Several members of this un and comins class mode the honor roll, namely: Vslois Bymers, Keith Taylor, Lila Herr, Jerry Thomas, and Edward Brown. Thst same year quite s number of this class took part in the bend, glee club, and mixed chorus. When the class had risen to the distinguished role of Sophomores, W3 ' lost three master minds: Vnlois Bymers, Kenneth Rehn, and Reese Mathieu, and 'WO -gained that genius of all geniuses, ister Hein. We nlso acquired Grace 'Gross Thrt year but we lost her ss the dfys whlzzed by. Maybe she was absorbed in the mighty stream of knowledge that was cc- quired by the Juniors of 39-40. More of our distinguished students nttsined the honor roll in 59-40, namely: Zkeith Taylor, Edward Brown, Hoe Boullion, Jeanne Chaon, 'ister Bain, Beverly Dobberpuhl, Jerry Thomas, Lila Herr. Master Edward Brown wus Captain of the crew und Miss Grabowskl was our faculty adviser. Edward Brown nnd Betty Lofthouse were our 'representatives to the student council with FOwcn Klapperich as Sergeant at Arms. We, as the Sophomores of 1939, gave n pnrty to entertain the Freshmen after putting them through the tortures of Misery Week. Ah, and now We sre Juniors. We have 'gained Reese Mathieu, William Hesrnen and in the second semester, Houston Clausen. The ambitious athletes of the Junior Class have been runners up in the class tournament for two successive years and their victory of first place next year is a fore- gone conclusion. Our class sponsored s school dence which was held on the 12th dny of February and was definitely s success. This year Beverly Dobberpuhl was head of the crew, and Miss Duncan was the class adviser. Edward Brown, Betty Lofthouse, Keith Taylor, and Beverly Dobberpuhl were our representatives in the student council this year. Our class play which was held in the fall end entitled UJune In Jununryn was s smash hit, and thst's not on exsggsration. We had very close to s full house. The proceeds, of course went to defray the expenses of the banquet for the Juniors and Seniors which was served on May 17 to 57 guests st the Hewitt Hotel. The ambitious Juniors also sold candy and popcorn balls at the basketball games to make money for the banquet. We might also add that the Juniors have set a precedent of having s Junior and Senior Prom after the banquet, 53 Beverly Dobberpuhl and Richard Hildebrant were our contestants at the typing contest held in Warner. Beverly won third place which is just another reason why this class is one of the most significant that Conde has ever had. Speaking of Beverly, she has also been the Class candidate for Gals Dey Queen for three successive years. This year nearly all of the members of the Junior Class are engaged in some activities. We dig right in and do our share of the work to make life n success and we hope the coming members is the Junior Class of Conde High School-will continue to do e same. 34 NATIONAL FIGURES IN THE JUNIOR CLASS Mae Boullion . . , . . . With many an inward qualm we suffered . the initiation lmpended upon us by our Sophomore predecessors. It was with great rejoicing that we attended the initiation party which marked an end to our suffering. We elected as our leaders during our first year: Donald Quinn, President, Edith Hanson, Vice-President, Robert White, Secretary-Treasurer. Donald Quinn and Dorothy Taylor were our members to the Student 'Jcuncil and Mr. Sabaka was our class advisor. Austin Nash dropped from school ln March and left us with still twenty-one members as Donalda Olson of Bradley had enlisted at the beginning of the second term. We were represented in band, mixed chorus, and girls glee club by fourteen members. In basketball, by two mem- bersg baseball, two At the close picnic at Lake Kamp we still had twenty members, and klttenball, seven members. of the school year all of us enjoyed the ska. Enrolllng on September 2, 1940, as Sophomores, we found one members, two of whom were new: Lloyd Lyren of Alc ster and Grace Gross of Bradley, replac- ing Donald Quinn who moved to Aberdeen, and Violetta Johnson, who moved to California. For our leaders during our Sophomore year we elected: Dorothy Taylor, President, Nell Lenz, Vice-Presldentg Frances Dunne, Secretary-Treasurer, and Betty Schneider and Lloyd Lyren as our members to the Student Council. We chose Mr. Koski as our advisor. During the year we lost two more members: Grace Gross and Luella Loken, the former to Bradley and the latter to Watertown, thus leaving our class with only nineteen members to continue the year. On September 20, the Freshmen and Sophomore classes were hosts at a Weiner roast given for the entire high school. ' We were well represented in the nigh school fctivitiss, having eight members in band, ten members in mixed chorus: two members in boys glee club, eight members in girls glce clubg two ln baseball, three in basketball and eight in diamondball. We are looking forward with anticipation to the picnic to be held at the close of the year at Lake Kampcska. 40 Gleeva-- Weva ---- Eun1ce--- Boyd ---- Lloyd--- Lou1s--- Ed1th--- Frances- Eleanor- Dele ---- Florence Robert-- Neil ---- Audrey-- Bctty--- Dorothy- Vida ---- Wayne ---- Donalds- AS owns SEEN-aw is also the motto of wisdomg but one.U is always renewing 1tself.u the great struggle not in HThe motto of chivalry to serve all and love NLove has no age as it NThe enjoyment lies in the pr1ze.u UTO know how to hide one's ability is great sk1ll.n nDiff1denoe and swkwerdness are antidotes to love.N UI envy no man who knows more than myself but pity them who know less.n NK1nd words are the music of the world.u HTO be happy is not the purpose for which you are placed in the world.U UNot only is there an art in knowing a thing also an art in applying 1t.u nHope against hope and ask till nBewere you be not swallowed up UAS for me all I know is that I nAn able men shows his spirit resolute sct1ons.n UI have e heart with room for every Joy.n UMen love little and often, women much and rerely.N e1one.n but ye reeeive.n in books.u know noth1ng.u by gentle words and NWit and humor belong to genius USens1b1l1ty cannot be acquired, people are born thus or they do not have 1t.N Nwit does not take the place of nThe shortest ple sure is the swoetest.n know1edge.u 41 --.- N- X. .,..-. fi, K AH km-.max 'N ...-'iii' L-...--.J 44 I Q ERT' W-.A f X. , . , Q: -,...........-..... Winning the first four games of the season from Stratford, Brentford, Doland, and Turton, the team went down in defeat to the conference chamgs of Bath. From then on the Spartans won eleven games and ost ten, making an average of 7376 victory over defeat. Defeating Turton in the first round of the Little Jim Tournament, Conde bowed their heads to Stratford in the se- cond, and finally came home with 3rd place. In the District Tournament at Redfield, the Spartans were defeated by Frank- fort and Rockham, but in a practice Tourney at Northville they placed Srd. There are seven men this year who are awarded WGN letters, they are Miesen, Cleveland, Dahl, Dittman, Reardon, Brown, and White. The first five of these men are graduates and their absence next year will be greatly noticed although there are prospects for a winning team from lower class men. There were about twenty boys out for baseball, many veterans and some very prospective rookies were sitting on the bench chewing their fingernails and waiting for the chance that was soon to come. After a few practices the team was rapidly taking shape. The new boys were showing some of the very good ball playing that Coach Vincent was looking for and seemed to have found. The first of the fall games was at hgme, and was some- what of an upset by our defeat from Northville. The rest of the season was 1002 perfect, winning every game thereafter played. The teams the Spartans defeated were Northville and Brentford twice and Stratford once. Practices have been limited this spring due to our heavy rains. We have played games with Bath, Northville, Warner, Turton, Brentford and Stratford. M On May 10, the Little Six Conference was held at Stratford where Conde played Bath in the first round. Two trophies were given, one for the fall season and one for the Conference Champions. ' INTERCLASS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT With e two year championship lead, five of the first string m 'vf' n, from the Senior Class, downed the Freshics with a score of Skob in the first round of the Conde High School Tournaments Then with a hard fought game the Juniors next defeated the Sophomores with a lead of 10-3. In the consol- ation game the Sophomores took on the Freshmen, winning 21- 16, and then in the finals the Seniors won oar the 'Juniors by totaling 34 points to their rivals 12. 66 X K Ji H , -f ': W W 1' F F F 1 F3 CRead left to right, front row firstj ' DIXXIVXQNDBALL Marian Bradley . They did and the au- dience laughed itself into the aisles watching the way the trio met up with Old Man Adversity and polished him off. Business was terrible--so very bad that it became necessary to givef the inn a reputation as a haven for ghosts and the hiding place for an old m1ser's gold. AThen came the paying guests, including an old maid who dabbled in spirltualismg a widow, just a bundle of nerves: a sleep walking Romeog his always-onbhakd hypochondriac wifeg his daughter with gum chewing propencltiesg and a bachelor farmer who was subject to nightmaresg the Cockney cook, who was one of the funniest characters in the play, and rounding out a comedy team was Gladiola, the colored maid: and Jasper, the bell hop. One ,of the boys lmpersonated a doctor and treated the guests for all sorts of fancied ailments. Another assumed a female character role and played fast and loose with many a palpitating masculine heart. A happy climax was reached when the boys disclosed their lmpereonations and the hidden treasure was located. 72 JUINHOR CLASS PLAY JUNE IN JANUARY A Farce Comedy in Three Acts by James F. So on the afternoon of October twenty-third the hunters from the Junior and Senior classes were excused to go hunting pheasants. Enough birds were brought in so that we could hold our banquet the following night at the school dormitory. Members of the Junior class prepared the pheas- ants for cooking and served the banquet. The cooking was done by Mrs. Lofthouse. The feed was brought to its climax when speeches were given by different members of our faculty and student body. Plenty of food and also a good time was reported by everyone present. GALA DAY Conde High School's annual Sosrtan Gels Day was held this year on the eighteenth of October. Events began in the afternoon with a baseball sane between the Braves of Brent- ford High and the Sosrtans. The gems oroved to be a very interesting effelr. Conde H1gh's halls were transferred into a carnival atmosnhere in the evening when the ennual carnival was held. Colored lights and decorations provided the background for the various booths and concessions. The entire carnival was a success from all angles with s net nrofit of 3118.49 realized.
