George H. Lange Rev. George Lange has been a vital member of Concordia's family for 13 years. A graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Seward, NE, and Concordia Seminary, Springfield, IL, he came to River Forest from Tomball, Texas, where he has been pastor of Zion Lutheran Church. Since 1974, he has served Concordia as director of admissions counseling, director of undergraduate student recruitment, director of undergraduate admissions, and finally as director of public relations. His capable guidance and strong leadership has brought a level of professionalism to everything he has been involved in, from the Foresters singing group, to the production and editing of The Forester newspaper. Everyone who has known and worked with Rev. Lange is aware of his enthusiasm for life, his commitment to serve the Lord, his dedication to his job, his constant striving for perfection, and his insatiable drive. Those who worked most closely with him know that he never demanded as much from them as he did from himself. Rev. Lange's commitment to the students of Concordia has been evident in his affection for them and a true concern for their future. He has always been willing to give guidance and professional expertise whenever asked. Equally strong is his dedication to his family. He and his wife Lois have three sons, Mike, Peter, and Jon, all graduates of River Forest, and one daughter, Susan, currently completing her junior year here. ln November, 1987, Rev. Lange accepted a call to serve as admissions director of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne. He will be missed here as he was such a vital part of the Concordia family. We wish him God blessings. ln recognition of his service and dedication to His Lord, Concordia, the students, and his family, we proudly dedicate the 1987-1988 Pillars to Reverend George H. Lange. Why, the spring musical Guys and Dolls, ofcourse, which was performed April 29, 30, and May l. The story basically revolves around two couples: Adelaide, a show girl, and Nathan, her gambling fiancee of fourteen years, and Sky, another New York gambler, and Sarah, the leader of the Mission church. There were many memorable scenes and performances in the musical, such as the opening street scene. Each area of the stage had a different activity taking place: a drunk in one corner, chorus girls in another, a vendor - using a baby carriage as her shop full of merchandise, policemen, pickpockets, and tourists from the South. The Mission Band was another memorable group. Here are some others: Sarah and Sky's first meeting in the Mission, QJon and Laura gave outstand- ing performances in these rolesl, the country scene at the Hot Box - I love you, a bushel and a peck . . . Adelaide's laments CAmy was a stunning 40's doll, right down to the New York accentj - A person . . , can develop a coId. , Nicely- Nicely and Benny iPauI and Markl - Nathan's friends, QJeff was praised for his role as Nathan - he was even compared to Frank Sinatra, who portrayed Nathan Detroit in the moviel, and the entire scene in Havana, Cuba - iway to move, Andy, Brenda, John, and Paulll. Act Two contained other memorable scenes. The first one which comes to mind is the strip scene - a favorite of the audience. Other scenes: the crap game in the sewer igreat dancing by the actorsl, Big Julie's fSteve'sl booming voice - I wanna shoot crapl , Sky's Luck Be a Lady Tonight , Adelaide and Nathan - Sue me, Sue me . . . , Nicely-Nicely's solo at the Mission - Sit down, you're rockin' the boat! , Adelaide and Sarah's duet - Marry the Man Today , and, last but not least, the ensemble's finale. X ' The Concordia College yearbook is dedicated to preserve all aspects of Concordia' administration faculty students drama sports student life etc. So this yearbook would be incomplete without mentioning the Lake movie theatre located in the Oak Park Ma . The Lake Movie Theatre has been around for 52 years which is almost as long as Concordia students have been going to see great movies there. Going to the Lake has become one of Concordia s many unofficial traditions like leaving all your napkins on the tray as you put it on the conveyor belt. All students quickly internalize the necessary rules required to complete a successful trip to the Lake and back. GOING TO THE LAKE: Ask a bunch of your friends to go with you. 5 When you encounter someone who insists that he absolutely posi- tively without a doubt must stay in and get his work done then have everyone come into that person s room. Everyone should gang up on this person and psychologically browbeat him until he feels that not going to the Lake with his friends is akin to stabbing each and every one of them IN-THE-BACK. On the way everyone should announce the number of times they ve seen the movie you are going to see. lf someone claims to have seen it more times than you have then declare that you know more lines from it anyway. lf someone has never seen it then everyone should immediately start discussing every single detail of the movie s intricate surprise ending. As you walk through the Oak Park Mall wonder if they will ever take down the Christmas decorations from last year. , 5 , , , , . , , X . , Il K , 1 , , .df l 945 , . , , , . , , , ARRIVINGAT THE LAKE When you see the line act like it has never been this long before Shout l don t believe lt' Get in line Keep looking up ahead as if this will speed up the line Look around at the pizza places and the frozen yogurt places It is important to familiarize yourself with these establishments so you will know what they were when you walk out of the movie and they are closed lf some of your friends show up when you are half way through the line let them after all a few more people isn t going to kill anyone lf anyone else lets a friend of theirs cut in ahead of you kill them fOr try your l don t believe lt' again J lf the manager happens to announce that the movie you were going to see IS sold out then quickly pick a different movie to see and happily exclaim That s O K' I wanted to see this movie anyway' Then all of you should secretly agree that the movie you want to see is always sold out As you approach the box office never get your money ready Walt until the tlcketer T' actually says S1 50 then take out your money etc Look to see which of your friends is first to pay When this person takes out their money quickly shout Hey tname of friend, is paying for all of us' This line is an absolute laugh riot sums and is therefore repeated as often as humanly possible A V IN THE THEATRE What are you doing in the theatre? An additional parking lot was put in next to David-Jonathon, which has been perfect for overflow parking. A fifteen-minute parking lot was added next to Mary-Martha, which was obviously needed since it has been in constant use! The Laborers for Christ were a welcome addition to the commu- nity when they came to help remodel Brohm and Krauss for use as profes- sor's offices. I suppose next we'll have a domed stadium? . . . sports to get involved in including volleyball basketball cross-country softball swimming badminton floor hockey bowling and free-throw con- test. Every floor or cluster has an l.M. representative that gets informa- tion about l.M. s to the students. The individual champions and team championship players receive the coveted l.M. mugs, and pizza parties are given to the winning floors. This unselfishness led to many great team performances and the best team attitude in recent history. Concordia was rec- ognized as one of the best area teams when they were ranked 10th in the Midwest Region of the NCAA Division lll. On offense, the 1987 team was the highest scoring team in Cougar history. On defense, the major improvement was in turnovers. The combination of team spirit and hustle allowed the Cougars to make an abrupt turnabout from a 2-6 record in 1986 to a 7-2 record in 1987. Seniors Marty Red- lawsk, Paul Ebert, Todd Wittlinger, Tom Tuomi, Greg Bahnfleth, and Joe Arduinog ju- niors Brian Smith and Fred Pawelkg and soph- omore Randy Smith were named First Team All-Conference. Seniors Chuck Buth and Dan Wolskyg juniors Phil Daley, -Gerry Dedina, and Tom Joseph, and sophomore Bill Sanders were named Honorable Mention All-Confer- ence. ln the Illini Badger Conference Red- lawsk was voted MVP, Ebert was Lineman-of- the-Year, and Jim Braun was Coach-of-the- Year. According to coach Tim Platt, The coaches and players are very disappointed to say the least - we expected to do much more but just were too inconsistent. We all, coaches and players alike, have to take a hard, honest look at our- selves and see what it will take to turn things around in our program and then work hard toward that goal. Al Loeb led all Cougar scorers with a 14.8 scoring average followed by Scott Nagy with 11 points a game. John Reincke was the top rebounder pulling down 8.3 caroms per game. Paul Miles was the most successful 3-point shooter connecting on 18f35 for 51 Z. Concordia will lose only Matt Faga to graduation and should return a strong core of seasoned veterans. QW i White Heart!! - An eager group of Concordians ready to see an awesome concert! if M' ah- Thus ends another edition of the Pillars . . As the year came to a close, each of us had collected a special set of memories from Concordia that will be unique to this year alone. As we reflect on these memories, may we cherish them and recognize each one as a blessing from our Lord - who loves us with such a great love. I would like to especially thank each member of the Pillars Staff and those who offered support, love, and encouragement for making this yearbook possible. Many people spent endless hours of time and dedication to make this collection of memories the best it could be. My prayer for each one who reads these pages is that you may continue to Catch the Spirit long after the excitement of the i987-88 school year has passed. May God bless each one of us with His love and His Spirit. Sandra S. Redemske Editor 'I . if 1 . 241 f,,'f'?'e'.
