We studied under you and taught with you. We followed your theatrical direction and acted alongside you. We were your students, colleagues, classmates, neighbors, friends - sharing this performance space on which you communicated to us what it means to live and die. The tragic and comic masks loom as symbols of the laughter which you so often generated despite the suffering which you were asked to endure. You taught us, however, that through Christ our sorrow will be tumed to joy, as yours now has been. You taught us that tribulation produces patience: and patience, experience: and experience, hope - which will not disap- point us. From you we have leamed hard lessons. Although we are bereft of your counsel, your compassion, and your care, your example continues to teach us all. But we will miss you still. f,.,..,,,, SEN IDRS . Who will ever forget the first time you heard this cheer at Concordia's very own Midnight Madness? What about the bus to Freshman Camp, Freshman O's anything goes or the Transfer Show? And well even if you have forgotten all of these, l'm sure your first taste of that great SAGA food will always be remembered! Or for all of you commuters did you ever really find a place to park without getting a ticket? But college here at Concordia was something more than eating at SAGA or going in search of a place to park. For many it meant leaving home for the first time, having a roommate, meeting new friends, and studying too! But as we hear the shout of C-O-U-G-A-R-S what makes Concordia distinct is not only the pride in our college, but the pride in our Lord Jesus Christ! The aim of all of the Orientation Staffs was to welcome all of the new students to Concordia and also share the message of Christ's death and ressurection through the theme, Fun in the Son! At Concordia and throughout our lives let's remember that: We came here to have fun, 'cause He is the one. And the work is done, now we can have fun . . . Fun in the Son! A blue piece of paper ap- peared in each students' mail- box asking for help in sand- bagging area homes and streets to protect them from the rising Des Plaines River. That day started a tive-day battle against The Flood , as it came to be known. Over 500 Concordia students participat- ed in this great event. The work was not easy. Volunteers often stood in knee-deep wa- ter, ankle deep mud and passed dripping wet, dirty sandbags down rows of peo- ple to form dikes to prevent the rising water from going any further. However it was not all hard work. Fellow Stu- dents became acquainted with one another for the lirst time, strengthened old friend- ships, and many students met people from the community. lt was a time for fellowship and togethemess. Through the hard work of the many volun- teers, a lot of prayers and mostly God's will, many homes were saved from the water and many other homes were saved completely. Starting out the week was the Psych Dance on Friday followed by Starlight Show- case on Saturday night featuring the musical talents of the Forest- ers and the Beatniks. The talent Show and Slave Auction were held on Monday night in the South Gym. The highlights of the Talent Show included the Freshman Camp Staff skits and Beth and Christine Laesch's violin and harp duet. The cheerleaders led the Pep Rally on Thursday night, which was followed by a busy Friday. The President's Reception in the KCC Lobby started out the evening and from there everyone went into the cafeteria for the Banquet. Chuck Swirsky, a WGN sportcaster, was the guest speaker. Later that evening, Lori Stomi was crowned Homecom- ing Queen during a beautiful Coronation service in the Chapel. The alumni followed their memories to the Alumni Brunch held on Saturday moming which led up to an exciting football game and a welcome victory against Plortheastem. Saturday's Home- coming Dance was given by First Act' in a beautifully decorated South Gym. Sunday began with a special worship service which was followed by the last Homecoming event, the Championship Powderpuff Football, won by the sophomores. Many new memo- ries were made this week and will be remembered forever. .. Y-- ,-42-an-easia- Godspell, Gctober 24,25,2 , 1986 Above: I baptize thee with water. Cast ..... The Artists of Concordia Theater opened their theater season in late October with a powerful and enthusiastic performance of Godspell. This production effectively com- bined ambitious choreography, emotional individual and ensemble singing, and seri- ous acting to put forth an outstanding proc- lamation of St. Matthew's gospel. Director Professor Paul Crrotelueschen worked especially hard to bring added life to the show and to break down barriers between the performers and the audience. He achieved this by allowing the company to move freely into the audience. We can easily see ourselves in the followers of Je- sus as the musical is portrayed in a mod- em day fashion. The company effectively grasped the at- tention of the audience throughout the presentation. Movement on the stage was almost constant. Every member put forth much effort to give their characters added energy. Godspell was not simply watched by the audience, it was experienced. For those who went to see it, the production will sure- ly be etched in their memory for years to come. Above: Sing Your Praise to the Lord. Left: We are the Body of Christ. Christine Schlelfendorf This year, Artists of Concordia Theater put on J.B. as their winter drama production. The play is based on the Biblical story of Job set in modem times. The story takes place in an old circus tent where Zuss and Plickles decide to dramatize the play of Job one last time. On cue, J.B., the perfect man, enters the circus ring with Sarah, his wife, and their five children. This opening family scene is a celebration of the Thanks- giving holiday and everyone is rejoicing in the fact that God has richly blessed them. With this scene over, Plickles begins to tear dovm Job's life by de- stroying his children, wealth, and taking his wife away. These scenes take place with the help of two messengers who tell of Nickles handiwork. Through- out the play, Zuss continues to try to convince Job that God is just and he must bless him. Finally, ever- ything but Job's faith is destroyed and his comforters come to comfort him. These comforters try to con- vince Job to curse God and die, but Job won't do it. Instead, Job continues to bless God and take what He gives him. ln the end, Job is given his wife back and his wealth is increased 100 fold. l ,, End Of The World April, 1987 READERS ....JaddMiller . . . . Peter Meyer . . . . . . Janet Wreath . . ....Linda Hahn Elizabeth Kopp . A playwright, who sees himself as a Sam Spade-like detective, is commissioned by a mysterious billionaire to write a play about the impending doom of the nuclear arms buildup. Loads of laugh along the way to a shocking conclusion. Whose Life Is It Anyway? May, 1987 Whose Life ls It Anyway? is a play which speaks directly and eloquently to some of the most critical issues facing modem society. ln this age of medical wizardry which trans- plants baboon hearts into babies and revives patients who lie dead on the operating table, we are confused with a series of bewildering ethical questions. When does life begin? When does it end? Who has the right to make these decisions? While Christian perspective clarifies some of these ques- tions, it by no means, provides cut-and-dry answers to all of them. For example, most Christians will agree that extraordi- nary means should not be used to keep patients alive: but what constitutes extraordinary means? Life is a gift from God, but at what point fif everl do man's efforts to artificially prolong life usurp C1od's authority over life and death? Ken's choice in the play is a paradox, by attempting to win the right to die, he must employ the very intelligence and resourcefulness which could keep him alive and give his life purpose. Having never been in Ken's position, we may find it easy to condemn his decision without attempting to under- stand the conditions which induce it. The play confronts us with the stark realities of Ken's situation, inviting us to con- sider all sides of the issue before we pass judgement. Whose Life is itAnyway? is also a play which was very close to the heart of Tom Bergmann, who originally selected the play and planned to direct the production. Tom knew a great ,,o--- ' deal about deliberating illness, since he spent the last five years of his life struggling with leukemia: he experienced firsthand the dehumanizing effects of long hospital stays and the inability to control his own body. Tom chose to fight his battle to the end, but he struggled with many of the same questions which confront Ken in the play. For this reason we dedicate this production to Tom and moum his loss.
