MW gi fr 107 he Adventures of lice Based on Lewis Carroll's books Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, director Thomas Bergmann put together a theatre of the imagination play. Because the show went on a tour, it was impossible to have an elabo- rate set or complicated costumes. The props were rather elaborate, in- cluding flamingos fpinki, pails, feather dusters, a stuffed pig, and green Hi-C. Amy Schelling, who played Alice, explained that she loved perform- ing for different audiences in differ- ent places. She continued, Tour- ing is a lot of fun. The kids really enjoy it. A longer tour, which would have taken place over Spring Break, had to be cancelled because not enough people were free at that time. Amy suggested that perhaps a longer tour could be made part of the lab work for a theater class. Because The Adventures of Alice had never been performed before, director Tom Bergmann encouraged his actors to use their imaginations. This was good practice for the actors when they left campus to perform on other stages. Until they arrived, the size and shape of the stage was a virtual mystery. One place had broken glass on the stage and a low ceiling. Another place had no back- stage area for the actors to wait when they were off-stage. However, sometimes that excitement got in the way, like when the children would start crawling on the stage or knock over flats. The cast members became very close because they spent so much time together. Since members had to take a morning class, most took either Intro to Sociology or Reader's Theatre. Then it was time to have sack lunches from Saga Con the stagel before doing make-up. It wasn't uncommon to spend an entire day together. By the end of Interim, everyone in the cast was eagerly looking for- ward to a much needed vacation. Al- though the cast loved doing the show, it was very exhausting to per- form every day and attend class. 415 As the show drew to a close, engrossed children crawled up to the stage's edge. The first play, Witness for the Prosecu- tion, was an award-winning play by Agatha Christie. Freshman Joe Basile was enlisted to act as a juror shortly before the show opened. He had not read the play before he saw it from the Ju- ror's box. I was pretty surprised tat the endingj and I was impressed. It didn't feel like a play. It felt like something that was really happen- ing. The loss of four starters from the year before and a very young team were contributing factors to this view. The Cougars approached the season with a different perspective. The Cougars went out to do their best and continue the Winning tradition of the year beforeg they did just that! Victories over St. Paul, Wheaton, and the University of Chicago kept attendance and curiosity rising. The Cougars acquired seven losses but in each of these games, although We didn't play our best, We never gave up in the fight. The losses included a three point loss in overtime and a one point loss on a last second shot both to IBC. Included in the Cougars 16-7 record is a first place in a tournament in Wisconsin and a second place in CIT. The key to the Cougars success was 10075 hard work and a Christ-centered team. The Lord gave each of us individual talents which He incorporated into a team which played for Him. The outcome of our Lord's mighty Work of art was a successful season. Injuries ended the season early for a few mem- bers. J on Lange injured his shoulder, Bob Wil- liams injured his arm, and Wade Nichols his knee. Our shining moment was the state meet at Knox College in Galesburg. Everyone per- formed exceptionally. One oustanding perfor- mance was that of freshman Mark Van Wie Who placed first in both the shot put and the discus. Men's Tennis X - f , Q six it .Vw X' 'ww S wht ,ff ..-we-..,..M.,., , ,ci . Left to Right: K. Knorr, T. Lewis, D. Hull, K. Nelson, T. Brand, D. Stellwagen, D. Grabarek, J. Stennfeld. The Tennis team for the '85 season finished in a strong way despite a shaky start. The team finished with a record of 11 wins and 5 losses. At the mid-point of the season, the team had a record of 3 wins and 4 losses, but the team won eight of its last 9 matches. Overall the team did not play up to its potential, but a few players did shine in their respective positions. Tim Lewis won the conference championship at the number five spot, and the doubles team of David Stellwagon and David Grabarek won the number two doubles championship for the second year in a row. In spite of one crazy experience with a van breaking down on a return trip from Kankakee which found the whole tennis team pushing the van to Harlem Ave. while Coach Faszholz steered, the team had a good, fun, and injury free season. The team gives their thanks to Coach Faszholz and most of all- God. Captain- John Stennfeld 1 OPPONENT Result North Park Lost I.I.T. It has certainly been an exciting year with a staff who all worked Well together. This year was one of the best years. I believe it was due to starting off so Well. A lot of people deserve credit for this: the staff and section editors, Gail Graham, Rich Richterg the photo lab staff, and the Concordia com- munity, for helping to create to memories that are included in this book. A yeabook is not made by just one set of hands, but rather, many all working togeth- er. And it is with this Pillars, that we Welcome You to the Family . In Christ, Jan Volkert, Editor , .Q X N. s wg IE 2: il-:ft its Well, here it is ....... your 1984 edition of Pillars! I 'hope you enjoy the memories this book contains. I certainly enjoyed helping put it together. This being my first time as Co-editor, I soon realized that there were many things I had to learn. I was thankful to have the help of our hard-Working staff, section edi- tors, Photo lab, our advisor, Rich Richter and Jan Volkert, to whom I owe a great deal of thanks to. Last but not least, thanks to the people of Concordia who make up The Family for whom We put this book together. I also thank the Lord for blessing me with these people who made this book possible and pray for continued blessings on the future editions. In Christ's Love Gail Graham, Co-Editor To an Athlete Dying Young by A. E. Housman The time you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-placeg Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high. Today, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay And early though the laurel grows It Withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the earsg Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners who renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl's. In Memory ucius '4 onnie Pierson Donnie distinguished himself in three ways. The first one was athletically. In the 1984 football season, Donnie led both the Concordia Cougar football team and the Illini-Badger League in rushing and was voted All Conference Tailback as a freshman. Secondly, Donnie distinguished himself as a person. He was a quiet leader. All through his career here at Concordia, his trademark had been his smile, which he could flash at any time and without it, it didn't seem like Donnie. Donnie's third area of achievement was spiritual. It was evident that Donnie had been touched by the hand of God and was one of God's children. So today, even though we miss Donnie, I think I now understand why Donnie was always smiling. It was because he knew Christ and His love and no matter how long his life was, he would be an example of this Christian love. Also, I know why Donnie was so confident. Because he also knew that he was safe in the hand of God and nothing the world could throw at him, even his untimely death, could hurt his relationship with his Father. Donnie's soul is with the Lord, andl will always remember Donnie as a great example of how to live a loving, confident Christian life. -Coach James Braun V ,Q sw ,I 1 4 'I ,Y if if . rie is f I KWS i l r l l 1 l I I J l ': lf la l li l l l 1 lr l 1 1 l l I I 1 i I 5 E l 1 Q I i . i F X I W , , -.
