That is the message that came through even before I reached campus. The Cougar Cub system and Orientation week really set the campus apart from other colleges. How can anyone not like Concordia, when everyone really goes all out to welcome you? - Deb Roth Orientation Week for freshmen and transfers, Freshmen Camp, Registra- tion, Campus Awareness, moving in, buying books, seeing old and new faces, first day of class . . . all sound familiar? Yes, that was September 1982. Be bold to enter into the presence of God, President Paul Zimmer- man said to the students, faculty, and staff at our Opening Service for the college's 118th year September 13. His sermon was based on Hebrews 10:19-25. And, six professors joined Concordia - Randal Becker, Gary Bertels, Anita Briedis, Colleen Chalmers, Martin Homan, and Carol Jabs. They were installed along with staff members, Mark Gruenwald, Marisa Heino, and Engeborg Teske. The 1981-1982 academic year was up by 6070 with 1038 undergraduates including 52 freshmen enrolled in the Lutheran General Nurs- ing Program, 182 graduate students and 51 others. To head up the student body were our Ex- Comm Officers: President Bill Tucker, Darla Schmidt, Sheryl Vestal, Rick Laubenstein, David Mc- Clean, Peter Bender, Linda Mock, Griff Nielson, and Denise Goeman. You know those times that could only happen once, that are SO special and SO exciting . . . that they're hard to remember! For me, Homecoming was just that - a really special honor that I've treasured away. - Linda Wingfield The biggest event in October was Homecoming. Ac- tivities included an ice cream social, talent show, pig- out, slave auction, vespers, court dress-up day, honor sports day, a pep rally, maroon and gold day, corona- tion, and the football game in the mud 12-7 against Eureka. It was on October 16 that Miss Linda Wingfield was crowned Concordia's queen. Cheryl Skibbe was first runner-up and Lynn Trinklein was se- cond runner-up. The other Court members were Kathy Ebert, Karen Oswald, Sharon Stellwagen, and Marsha Wink. Many people put a lot of love into Homecom- ing, according to Queen Wingfield. ' ,fait 9, -.., .. . K ... Artists of Concordia Theatre presented this play and several others this year. ln Oc- tober, Cinderella's Dream played for two weekends. This production was a iw- musical adaptation of Grimm's fairy tale. The music was composed and arranged by Kathryn Krause and the book and lyrics were written by Professor Fran Sims. The King and Queen were played by L. Don Swartz and Linnae Heinz. The Children's Hour came to Concordia the first two weekends of November. In it, Beverly Zschiegner and Sheri Corporan were the two young women who ran the boarding school. Carol Jeske, a boarding school student, tells a lie and ruins the wishes and dream of the head-mistresses. ACT's performances continued throughout the year. Whether conversing with friends or studying outside, it was a beautiful month at Concordia. And, Kapelle and Band members were happy to be back from their tours over spring break. The 59 Kapelle members presented concerts at Lutheran chur- ches in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois and at some Detroit area Lutheran high schools. This was the 23rd tour Dr. Thomas Gieschen directed. I've had to face the fact that I may not be able to teach next year, and that's not easy. I had looked forward to begin- ning my ministry. I would like to express my thanks to those in- dividuals that gave the staff support, guidance, and help throughout the production of the 1982 Pillars. The planning stages went smoothly with the help of Joan Wangerow and Bob Libka during the summer months, President Zimmer- man, and our fine Taylor reps, John Harrold and Ken Nemsick. I was so pleased to begin our first year with Taylor Publishing Company. After Rich Richter's acceptance as our Advisor, he plunged into work printing the opening color section. His long hours in the lab helped cut ex- penses for which I m very grateful Mr Milas of Milas Studio Rev Lange Stella and Bob Preloger and Gregg Braun were helpful with suggestions ideas and providing senior portraits And without S A Photo Lab we certainly would photo lab staff were extremely important to me to the very end - thanks Bruce! Paul, I really appreciated all your long hours in the dark room, your dedication, and the beautiful prints you provided, your ideas, and for making this the very best of my college years. Staff, you were always willing to assume extra responsibility, run errands, give up your own ac- tivities, and make Monday meetings - even though I managed to be late! Thank you for the creativity and time you put into your sections. A special thank you goes to Mary Bergen Judy Mindy, Peggy Sawitzki, Jan Volkert, and my Assistant Editor, Tina Yerkey, who helped in those crucial times mid-stream. And, Jon Kohrs, Mary Brown, and Debbie Corning, and Deb Roth you all did such an excellent job with your sections. Deb Roth, the opening is great! For all your patience and help during my student teaching spring quarter, thank you staff! Because of the team spirit that developed, this yearbook will have special meaning to us. The 1982 Pillars will serve as a reminder of our times together. I hope that it will do the same for you and bring back many fond memories of your own college experiences memories which you can treasure in years to come Nothing could be better than C C R F To the glory of our Lord Jesus not have been able to have this yearbook Coordinator Paul McCain and his v'lM Christ Your Editor Lynn Grunow Closing r R 132823 LD 1281 .
