Classic productions are chosen each fall and winter to be performed by Concordia students for children in the neighborhood and local schools. The fall production this year was Rags to Riches by Aurand Harris. Major roles were played by Kristen Clausen, Lee Sauer, and Amalio Nieves. J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit was the winter feature at the Children's Theatre. Fantasy came alive as Bilbo Baggins, John Shull, came face to face with real live dwarfs, elves, and trolls. Expert customs and makeup made The Hobbit an exciting adventure into the underworld. This years Children's Theatre productions added to the high reputation the Children's Theatre has been holding for eighteen years. C5 fu fr y? . W ' .- '41' . There isn't any place which reflects the season any better than Concordia. During the three week interim period the Concordia community had the opportunity to be a part of the successful Christmas Crafts show. The community was also involved in giving the giant Christmas card to Cambodia. Third Brohm kept in the Christmas spirit by taking Santa pictures with proceeds going to needy Chicago families. The Concordia community proved that with love people can share and work together in making a wonderful holiday season. . Co-chaired by Kathy Ebert and Jenny Degner, the weekend was kicked off with a square dance Wednesday night. Thursday night was an ice cream social with entertainment by students. The Resurrection Band and De Garmo and Key Band provided musical entertainment Friday night. A beach party was planned for Saturday, but canceled for lack of sun. That evening chauffeur service to nearby restaurants was provided and a semi-formal dance with Current was held in the South gym. Sunday, after a busy weekend, a special Campus worship service was held and then everyone had a quiet afternoon to recover. te-:gel 2 32 X Spring Weekend Q! QNX X I f 4 5 1. The spring musical, Carnival, brought the jugglers, puppeteers, acrobats, magicians . . . out from the midst of Concordia to the South gym stage. The musical portrayed through song and dance the story of an orphan girl Lili ljudy Hilkenl, who finds her tme love in a former dancer, Paul lPeter Benderl, who is now a puppeteer because of an injured leg. An added love interest is Marco the Magnificent lBrian Doepkel, who is supposedly kept in line by The Incomparable Rosalie llaouanne Eischerj. Refreshments and helium balloons were sold from booths to keep alive the Carnival spirit. 8 Musical X 35 E ' PJ-S 11'K7f3J Z. . - Twenty-two years ago at the Northern Illinois District Convention a special offering was taken to raise money for a chapel-auditorium to be built at Concordia College, River Forest, Il. May 18, 1980 the Concordia Community witnessed the dedication of the chapel. For almost two full years Concordia students have watched the construction of this chapel. At times it looked impossible that the building would ever be ready for use, but on May 18th it was ready and truely worth waiting for. The dedication service included a Brass Ensemble, Kapelle and Chapel Choir numbers, the Rite of Dedication and the Presentation of the Keys. Mrs. Clara Spencer was able to witness this eventg her contribution made the auditorium possible. Many other orginal supporters of this chapel-auditorium were also present at the dedication. The Concordia campus is extremely proud of the buildingg and it will be a great blessing in the future. V' we-if 3 l. Pres. Zimmerman leads the congregation during the chapel dedication service. 2. This tends to be a popular question each spring, while Natari members are preparing for their performance. Natari is Concordia's synchronized swim team. This year they Reflected the 70's and swam to popular tunes such as: King Tut , I am Woman , Star Wars and You Light up my Life,'. Everyone present was in amazement over the many costumes and large variety of strokes that can be performed in 12 feet of Water. Its no wonder why Natari had a large crowd gather again this year to watch the Reflections of the 70's. 2 NATARI: FRONT ROW: Mary Rosin, Diane Going, Laurie Harm, Ruth Maas, Cathy Jaeger, Phil Gieschen. Sports for those almost coordinated enough to tie their shoes - right? Not so here at Concordia. While basically for fun, some contests are hard fought and the winners know they have worked for their victory. At least three sports are offered each quarter for males and females. Floors, faculty members, and commuter students put together teams to compete for prizes. The male and female teams who at the end of the year had won the most sports were given a pizza party. Led by senior tri-captains Ann Peck, Mary Rosin, and Candy Stoll, the inexperienced yet spirited squad of 18 members overcame early season losses, winning 3 of 4 mid-season matches, before concluding the season at the College Central Association Tournament held at Rockford College. Six individuals were chosen to play at the Sectional Tournament. Stoll was chosen as lst-team goalkeeper while Ann Peck and Karen Sylvester were both chosen as lst-team members. Mary Rosin, Ella Harms and Jeanne Young were all chosen as 2nd-team members. Stoll was also chosen as Honorable-mention Goalkeeper, narrowly missing being chosen to play at the National Tournament. The team benefited from such outstanding individual performances, but the season will especially be remembered as a complete team effort in which everyone contributed their all. A Young Cross Country Team hit the roads of Concordia this year. With the majority of the team being freshmen, the team lacked the necessary college experience needed for a winning season. Tim Schilling did make it big this year by going to Nationals in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Although the record does not show it, the team had the enthusiasm needed for a great season. Although the final record was 6 wins and 20 losses the quality and talent of the team is not always shown in the record. The season reached its high point when the Cougars took first place at C.I.T. A win against Seward makes a winning season. The Junior Varsity Basketball team had a little better season, winning forty percent of their games. This is a very good record C6-93 since the team was under the guidance of a new coach - Tim Platt. Coach Platt was replacing the usual JV Coach, Al Hermann while he was on sabbatical. Many school records were broken this year, including Julie Haertling breaking the mile record and Jeanne Kunde breaking the 300 meter record. The highlight of the season took place at State when Mary Hendrickson broke the State record in the javelin. Seven state medals were taken by the Kitten members, placing the team seventh in state. The new coach. Wendy Bursie, did a remarkable job with this small team. Being a former Concordia student. Coach Bersie, knew what it took to make all the Concordia talent into a winning track team. The Men's Tracl-1 Team had an excellent 1980 season. Although the team was not full. only 13 members. they all put forth great effort making the 1980 season one of the best. Vern Dickison broke the school High Jump record while Dave Schnurstein broke the Triple Jump record. The District meet brought a nice finish for the season as Vern Dickison brought back two first place medals, and the Relay Team, another. Coach Brockberg remarked that considering the size of the team. it was one of the finest Concordia has had. V V if ,M ff V, 2. W' -I -V w t? H 4' .fZ'AX::.?:i.v3QV.',:l ..L- 5 .5-4, 'f5f1:V?If7 . This year we would like to bring some attention to those many people who are forgotten. Those secretaries who many times have held their offices together, those maintenance men who repair things at a drop of a hat, and our dear friends at Saga who listen to all our gnlmbles. The list of people who serve us is endless, but yet we feel we should recognize as many as possible, and let them know the work they do will not be forgotten. 6 3t'N,.Wx ew, t..ieX+f3fer.ai il l M , mv-ws 1 ia! They are college students who have come from all over the world to learn English here at Concordia. Many attempts have been made throughout the year to get them involved with Concordia students. Concordia students have learned a lot about other countries through culture nights, ice skating and participating in devos with ELS students. ELS students have however. learned more from us and about our culture by living with us. Concordia therefore is a living example of American culture to the rest of the world. ll ith- lui EB H 1 ? The Directory is part of the yearbook so we not only can remember the events of the year but individual faces also.
