THE CITY OF GOD No human being nor assortment of God's crea- tures can jointly make any place a Hcity of God. Any such city is a new creation uwhose Builder and Maker is Godf, Man has one great capacity, to tear down Codis cities. Only Cod can build or rebuild them. To say this, is not to reject His new creation, the Church, as being a helpless, hopeless cadaver in the process of renewal and reconciliation. The Body of Christ, alive and powerful in the strength supplied by the Head, builds a new Jerusalem. This is a spiritual temple He calls upon us to build, not a New Testament replica of the archi- tectural grandeur wrought by Solomon. The City of Cod we are engaged in building with Him is one of living stones, ubuilt upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the Chief Cornerstone. We build no Zions on the Mississippi, nor on Lake Michigan. We are His workmanship, cre- ated in Christ Jesus unto good works, with whom He will work to build a holy temple, a body of believers whose only glory is to be named after Christ, a fellowship which accords Codis dignity equally to male and female, Jew and Gentile, slave and free. The beauty of the Church is the conferred beauty of our Lord. Let us pledge our lives, our sacred honor, our undying devotion to he His busy builders, not distraught dismantlersg His resilient reconcilers, not diabolical dividers, His wholesome healers, not dreary dispensers of disease, His adaptable agents of ' change, not stubborn obstructionist against His saving will. Such a pledge calls for bitter self-denial, for self-crucifying service, and for a love which believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. The keeping of our pledges to Him depends on His keeping of His pledges to us. He always gives us what He asks of us. The Builder can make builders of us all. M. L.
