wisdom Good teachers are dedicated, capable, enthusiastic people who instill in their students a respect for people, a love for learning, and a desire to serve their fellowman. Such a teacher is Herbert H. Gross, professor of geography. Students who have been privileged to sit in his classes have been touched by the personality of a man who is dedicated to his God and to his profession. They have felt the enthusiasm ot his teaching and the intensity of his desire to produce capable teachers of children. They have been swept along by a restless energy which is dedicated to serving God in the classroom and to preparing others for such service. Coupled with such a personality is professional competence of the highest order. Dr. Gross is known and respected for his books and articles on education and geography. His colleagues have paid tribute to him by making him president of their national organization, The National Council for Geographic Education. Their confidence in him was further indicated when they made him editor of their journal. This noble ensampleto his sheep he yaf, That first he wroghte and afterward he taughte, said Chaucer of his parson. The description fits Dr. Gross equally well. His attempts to train competent, dedicated teachers are prosecuted vigorously and consciously by precept. His example is not consciously devisedg it flows naturally from him. Carefully prepared lectures and lessons are doubly impressive when they are reinforced by an example of how a dedicated Christian may serve his Lord and his Church. Christian, churchman, educator, scholar, teacher- all are encompassed in Dr. Gross. To him we gladly and re- spectfully dedicate this yearbook.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ACTING PRESIDENT We live in an age of ferment and revolution, The order of the day is change-often violent change. Shifts in vision, values, and forms have upset individuals, institutions, and societies all over the world. There are some who feel that the Church ought to be immune-that the Church should be a haven of rest from the turmoil surrounding it. But we find it is not so. You who leave Concordia to become teachers of the Church know already that you must wrestle hand-to-hand with all the prob- lems of mankind. What will you bring to the struggle? Has your education in a Christian college made you sensitive to the agonies of the rejected and abused? Or do you still have the illusion that you can get away with look- ing out for Number One ? Do you now see that the mercy of God encompasses all men and covers each man totally-body and soul? Or do you still feel that some people are not worth your time, or that you can ignore all the needs of a man except his need of salvation? We hope that at Concordia your view of God and man has been deepened, broadened, and made sensitive. We hope that your future classrooms will be places where the mercy of God is not merely discussed and debated but demonstrated and applied. We hope that here you have learned that despite all the changes there stands present among us the One Who can say, I am the Lord, I change not. And above all we pray that the unchanging Lord Who remains with us will abide with you and your pupils through all your life into eternity.
