For one hundred years Concordia Teachers College has been nur- turing the Teaching ministry of the Lutheran Church-Mis- souri Synod, providing a high-quality training program for future teachers of the church. Our church has always been concerned with Christian education. The original plans were to include a school in every organized congregation. In l857 therefore, a normal department, under the dire-ction of Professor Ph. Fleisch- rnann, was established in coniunction with the seminary at Fort Wayne. However, conditions rapidly became over- crowded because of the demand for teachers who had re- ceived Christian training for the five years C3 preparatory and 2 normall offered at the school. Addison Lutherans, mainly members of Zion Lutheran Congregation Know Bensonvillej, promised Synod land, money, and some labor if the new normal school would be built there. Synod accepted the offer and made plans to have the facilities ready by September 1864. Due to- short- ages caused by the Civil War, the buildings were not com- pleted until December 1864. ln the first fifteen years of its existence the Reverend J. C. W. Lindemann served as president of the college. The first student body included students of all ages and back- grounds. There were new confirmands, older men who had worked for many years, and some new immigrants sent from Germany to learn to teach. As the student body increased in size, Synod enlarged the campus. By 1887, three dorms, classrooms, a dining hall, an assembly hall and a library had been added, in 1895 a gym was built.
