The Editor i Concordia Teachers College River Forest, Illinois Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod L ua i 3 Dedication Mr. Christ H. Carbers We are proud to dedicate this yearbook to a lay member of the Church, Mr. Christ H. Garbers. Mr. Garbers has served the Church in many capacities. Concordia knows him best as a hard work- ing member of the Board of Control. Born in 1882 in Germany, Mr. Carbers has been a resident of Oak Park, Illinois since 1893. In 1918 he organized the Central Grocers Co-operative Inc., and served as president of that company from 1918 to 1952. As a member of Grace Church in River Forest, Mr. Carbers served as an Elder, chairman of the Stewardship and the Mission Committees, and vice chairman of the Building Committee. Always a willing servant of Christ and the Church, he was elected to the Board of Control of Concordia in 1930. He was treasurer of the Board from 1930 to 1950. Mr. Carbers retired from the Board in 1950, but was asked to stay on as treasurer. He served in this capacity until 1953. During Mr. Carbers' term of office he was chair- man of the Building Committee and as such was in- strumental in the erection of the Library and Mary- Martha Hall. While being interviewed, Mr. Carbers asked that the following statement be included in this article: I would like to pay special tribute to the students of Concordia. Through all the years of my association with your school 1 have observed that Concordia students are truly Christian young people in word and action, always showing Christian love both on the campus and in the Oak Park - River Forest community. My business associates and friends in the community have often ex- pressed the same sentimentf, ln response to Mr. Carbers, and in appreciation for all that he has done, we would like to say as St. Paul has said: I thank my God upon every remem- brance of you. 41515 11 Pres1dent s Message Pres1dent Martm L Koehneke For to me to lwe is Chrzst Phzlzppzans 1 21 In the Name of Jesus' What IS our purpose 1n l1fe9 St Paul s answer 1S terse tlflgllflg and tantal1z1ng Chrlstl Our life 15 h1d with Chr1st in Cod He IS the Source of our phys1cal and sp1r1tual life as well for He IS the L1fe Whosoever l1veth and beheveth 1n Me shall never die All life IS from H1m by Him and 1n H1m serve H1m by w1ll1nff consecration 1S truly to l1ve' To be a Chr1st1an IS to IIVC abundantly To IIVC Christ IS to let H1m he the model of all our life as well as 1tS der1vat1on and mot1vat1on He IS the One who sets a pattern safe to follow To walk in H1s steps w1ll keep us from stumblmg Our whole m1n1stry of teachmg lS to let this Chr1st who IS our L1fe sh1ne throu h 1nto the lives of others One of the highest compliments you w1ll ever receive will be Teacher you rem1nd me so much of Jesus We send you forth as l1ttle Chr1sts and pray that the Chr1st who lives in you w1ll come 1nto the IIVCS of others throuch you' One of Chr1st s Pres1dent :,,,,.. 0 7 H . . . - 7 . . . . . . . . , , . Dr. Arthur Klinck left Concordia at the end of the first quarter in 1953 after ably serving Concordia as president for fourteen years. Dr. Schmieding, academic dean. took over the reins until the, new president -was installed on September 16, 1954. President Martin L. Koebneke was born April 11, 1916, in Dodge Center, Minnesota. 1n preparation for the ministry -he attended Concordia College, Milwaukee, and Concordia Seminary, Saint Louis. He also studied educational administration at the graduate school of the University of Texas, Austin. At the time when President Koehneke was called to Concordia Teachers College, he was Counselor for Parish Education of the Texas District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Upon being installed as the sixth president of Concordia Teachers College, President Koehneke faced the diflicult task of directing Concordia as its administrator and in particular, as its spiritual leader. It is in this latter capacity, especially, that the President has found a warm spot in the hearts of the entire Concordia community. As may be seen in one of the pictures, on this page, President Koehneke is close to the students in a very friendly and informal way. At the same time he has upheld the dignity and respect due to his calling as our elder and guide. May the Lord bless you and keep you, President Koehneke, as an instrument of our Lord here at Concordia. 6 Y e Admidistration And Faculty nj' .gh-Haifa! 12' 3 ,a -.A V -v :. v f - v r 1 I ,i 1 6 fi v Administration in- Left to right: Wilfred F. The experience of the former students and the initiative of the present members join together to accomplish more thoroughly and satisfactorily the needs and Wishes of the student body. The primary purpose in every action taken by the Association is to aid the individual student, for each student is a member of this organization and each is given the opportunity to co-operate with and benefit from this student organization. This year, as in every year, there arose many opportunities to accomplish much through co-operation and organization. Such events as the completion of the tennis court drive, the success of the enlarged Homecoming plan, the enriched Field Day activities, and the adjustment to the renovated men s dormitory are examples of what could only have been accomplished by a joint effort of the entire student body. For the successful accomplishment of this year,s Student Association' We owe much to our new President and his interest in student welfare For this opportunity to learn the value of co-operation, for the never failing guidance in all things, and for the sense of fellowship which is offered to all students through the Student Association, our thanks must ultimately go to our Lord whose constant interest is focused on this His Workshop for future teachers Our only regret is that We cannot share in the even greater opportunities which will be offered to the next Student Association Sembuck Paul McCain 4-8 7 . Clay Fisher, Bernie Lutz, Cliff Dietrich, The Concordia College football team had some tall building to do this season due to the fact that only two lettermen, Ray Glawe and Bob Hanneman, returned from last year's team. The majority of the team were new recruits who enrolled at Con- cordia this fall. The coaching staff did a creditable job of developing the new and inexperienced players. Bob Creising, head coach, and his two assistants, Phil Elbert and Eric von Behren, indeed deserve much recognition for their time and patience given to each of the players. Though the Cougars were victorious in only one of their grid contests, the team holds great promise for the future. With the loss of only four seniors, the Cougars look forward to the 1955 season with high spirits that it will be a '6Cougar year. 8, , j,gs:,gsug, :ear t U 1.1 ' Season's Results CTC St. Procopius T cTc North Central 45' I CTC Milton CTC Northwestern .
