With apologies to Wiashiiigton lrving, we cannot present this volume in a more appro- priate manner than simply requesting the reader, if he should lind something here or there to please him, to rest assured that it was written expressly for intel- ligent readers like himselfg but entreating him, should he tind anything to dislike, to tolerate it, as one of those articles which the lfditors have been obliged to write for readers of a less relined taste. Possibly this seems Ll iloolisii ques- tion to most rmfL1S. XtJLlXYliiSE1Y, Milf course, I sun awake . But intelh- gent and experienced men und wrnnen will tell you that uf the huniznn race perhaps seventy-iive per-cent. or per- haps even more, are not uide axnetke, and that they ure in this inert condi- tion heeztuse they are not responsive. So the question, JXre you Nxikic :1n:tke? may after all prove quite proper. The test you nizti' apply to determine xi hether you ure unlike is us follows: Xxihen you receive udvice or instruction of any kind from any source uhatsoever, have you that high up- preeizttion of its value that you study and esteem the truth of it? Or are you sleeping with your eyes xx idk' open: is your brain like L1 worii-fmt machine, merely creating enough disturbance to rattle at little? An old piece of much- inery makes at loud noise to little or no effect, hut gt good inuehine niay run Very fast, producing uonderful eiilects, :ind still create little or no disturbance. In order to ascertain uhether or not you have the alertness and disposition In hecmne the highest possible grade of intelligent heing, you must apply at second test. It is tu determine whether or not you respond to at proposition laid down before you. Sorneone riders you ai silggestion or an idea. Do you realize of what value it is Tw you? If not. you will not de- velop any inzlteriul weight as E1 pro- ducer of results. No, not until you become responsive in some may to every impression laid ht-fore you. If you 11101011 see or hear it, there is no growth uf mind. If what is said or done has no induenee on your rnind, it indicates that you are not aware of the fact that great things :ire made up of small details. Non then, do you wish to he one of the seventy-tive per-cent? If so, it is easy: but it means that you are giv- ing yourself u hhiclt eyen. If, hou- ever, you wish to he of the remainder, if you xxish to he responsive, if you wish to he it successful man, stay wide awake? Gott segne Dich, Concordia. 3Learn tu labor ani: tu Wait After six years of strenuous work at our Alma Mater, we have finally reached our goal, the object of our endeavors, namely, to become par- ochial school teachers. VVe shall not look upon the afiairs of the world from a distance, as we have done up to the present time, nay, we will be assigned to a position in the midst of friends and enemies. There may be danger after we have left Concordia that either one or the other may think he has now completed his studies. Be- ware of such a thought. and let us I1Ot be pedants, and pretend to be knowledge personified. There are still many things which we have to learn. Let us, therefore, not come to a stand- still, but L' Excelsior , that is to say, strive to attain a higher degree of efii- ciency in our work. This maxim should constantly be in our mind. lf one does not struggle upward, one will soon discover to his dismay that, in- stead of a progressive, he will find him- self a retrogressive teacher. Therefore, dear Classmates, let us bear in mind the maxim introduced by Longfellow, Hliixcelsiorw. Shall we, however, succeed in all our enterprises, will our endeavors be crowned with success? This question will naturally arise in our hearts. and we must admit that this will not be the case. Wie shall be bound with var- ious difiiculties, we shall meet with many obstacles which seek to impede our progress. However, let us work diligently and try to overcome these impediments. This we shall not al- ways find an easy task. VVe may work, and do everything within our power, but still we see no result. However, let us never be discouraged, but always adhere to our motto: 'fLearn to Labor and to NVaitl Longfellow tells us we should learn to labor and to wait. lt is not sufii- cient that we only labor, for, if we do not at once meet with the desired success, we must also learn to wait, and wait patiently, because Hlmpa- tience dries the blood sooner than age or sorrow , a king of Greece once said. However, all things come to him who waits. Let us, therefore, dear Class- mate, in our future vocation abide with our motto: 'fLearn to Labor and to Wlaitf' The last leaf The purpose of the Last Leaf , as it is published annually by the Sen- iors of Concordia, is first, to maintain an intimate relation between the in- dividual members of the Class, and secondly, to bring Concordia into clos- er connection with our fellow-Luth- erans. lt is probably not necessary to encourage our fellow-students to look forward to the annual publication of the Last Leafw. Where is the student who is not interested in every- 1 aye I0 thing pertaining to his Alma hlater? But we wish to call the special atten- tion of the dear reader who is not afiiliated with the institution to the fact that the Last Leaf brings the College of River Forest to your very home. lt gives you an idea of the college life of our boys, their ways, their activities. Let us not be stran- gers to each other, but let one know the other so that he may work in the interest of the other. tllllass ibuem Bright be our path till we meet again, l,ife has its pleasure and its pain, Lightly may shadow our sky's brightness veilg Clear be the sunshine in which our barks sail Secure in the haven in w hieh we are blest. We'll tread the path that duty marks, Vkhatever may betide, And only this our hearts regret That here our paths divide. Yet hope is bright, and ne'er will fail, VVe'll sing, w'e'll sing its strain Until the morn with smiles shall dawn Cn which we meet again. Though far we roam through distant elimes And other friendships lind. The friends of yore wse'll ne'er give o'er But always keep in mind. The busy throng and life's demand VVill claim our daily thought, But all our hours of rest will be Wiith hallowed mem'ries fraught. Let song this hour our tongues employ Fond mem'ries to retrieve, For song will soothe an aching heart And bless the hour we leave. Then joys glad' hour our hearts shall till, Dismiss all serious blight, And ne'er a day in night shall close VVithout one ray of light. hflay purest joys fore'er be thine, God's blessing be thy share, hlay purest love thy heart entwine Heav'n make thv lot its care, And may the brightest hopes of all Our path through life attend, And then the joy, the sweetest joy, Await our journeys end. -Anon. ' l xt For many weeks we had been long- 1 - V H 'ixX ing for the time when we should leave l New our homes to begin our life at college. , Ar last the time had come, but we Z I i ' were not happy and gay, as we had ex- pected, but with heavy hearts we bade E Good-bye to all who were dear to us. The trip to the station and from .521- there to Chicago seemed very long be- cause we were thinking of the loved ones we were leaving behind, and wondering what was awaiting us when we should arrive at our destination. At the 1. C. Station in Chicago we were met by a jovial crowd of students who cheered and sang until our hearts felt somewhat lighter. Wle boarded the old Addison Dummy , and, after a trip of an hour and a half, we saw in the distance the famous village called Addison. Upon leaving the train, we followed the crowd through the beautiful park. Dir. Theo. Brohm gave us a hearty welcome, and directed us to our rooms. Vliho can describe our disappointment when we entered those rooms? They appeared desolate and bare, w here we had expected beautiful and comfort- able homes. Most of us left the rooms as soon as possible, and roamed about in the park. Wvhy should we stay in the rooms? There was no one with whom we were acquainted, and we were not gayly enough disposed to niinglc in the conversation of the other students, But life at college was not always dark and dreary. After a few weeks wc gradually became acquainted, and PZIQ1' JS as our acquaintance grew, so also our interest in our new life. Class '18 was the largest class in ex- istence at the time. YVe had 37 mem- bers. Theo. Nleyer was our president, and our secretary VV. Wlolf. How- ever, God deemed it necessary to take from our midst one of our beloved members. Brunkhorst died at his home after an operation on the appen- dix. Although this was our first year, we were fairly well represented in the college sports. Qur team won its first baseball game against Class '17, Blitz,' being our pitcher. Our class also developed a pretty good basket- ball team. During the course of the year we selected our class colors, Hhlaroon and VVhite',. Un November 21, 1912, Prof. lXf1. Lochner of Emmanuel College, Greens- boro, N. C. was called to fill the vacan- cy which had been caused by the death of Prof. E. Homann. A few weeks later the corner stone of our new home at River Forest was laid. Shortly before the end of the year, we were grieved by the sad news of the resignation of our dearly beloved Di- rector Theo. Brohm. The vacancy was soon filled, however, by the Rev. Wi. C. Kohn, who was to be our D1- rector in our new home. 1913214 The Alast days of vacation had passed, and again we boarded the train. This time our destination was not Addison, but River Forest. Our vacation had been lengthened con- siderably, and so it was that we arrived here on October 8. VVho can cry l irel suddenly reverberated along the corridors. Wiith heavy hearts, and tears in our eyes we watched the Work of the firemen, While the fire destroyed our magnificent Ad- ministration Building. On the follow- ing htlonday the Student Body was dismissed, but only for two Weeks. Some of the bed-rooms had been con- verted into class-rooms to enable us to finish the year's course. Un October 12, 1913, approximately 40,000 people from' Chicago and all parts of the country gathered at our institution to dedicate our new home. Great was the rejoicing of the people when they saw what the lXflissouri Synod had accomplished. We had not yet fully realized the excellence of our building, when, on that fatal night of February 18, the lNf1anyi thousands of people from Chi- cago and vicinity were present. Some Weeks later services were held in the c.h.a.pel,ai-H cofrrrrrerrrorartioii of the fiftieth anniversary of Prof. J. L. Backhaus and the twenty-fifth anni- versary of Prof. A. On December 9, we were all shocked by the sad news that the Lord had taken our beloved Prof. Friederich Rechlin from our midst. I-le had been suffering for some time of anemia. hlr. O. F. ONCORDIA--Alma Mater-- , whatsweetmemoriesthemere sound ofthese words awaken! Ei Days of youth and of growth, A A of physical, mental, and mor- al development they were, which we were permitted to enjoy under her fos- tering care. 'Tis true that those were also days in which in youthful ezcuber- ance many a prank was perpetrated, and in which, due to youthfulfrivolity and Adamic perversity, many an of- fense we committed of which today we are sorely ashamed. But whatever we may have been or done in those days, who that must not admit that our intellectual and spiritual mater was to us an alma mater. Especially those in ho .wish El- less strenuous exercise than baseball offers, indulge in this pastime. But also many of those who take an active part in other sports are ardent admirers and skillful participants in tennis. YVQ can boast of A , six well kept courts on our campus, one for each class. Each class has its own club. Thus, there are six organizations or ten- nis clubs. Each takes care of its own court, and also furnishes its own goods. Wiith the first indication that spring has come to stay, the courts are made ready for the opening of the tennis season. This is usually done by raking and rolling them again and again. Since there are so many members in each club, a schedule is arranged to give every one an opportunity to play. The courts are almost constantly occupied during most of the leisure time throughout the spring and summer. At the close of each season, tournaments take place between the various clubs for the college championship. The games are usually hotly contested, and arouse much interest and eager enthusiasm. Class '18 has always been well represented on the tennis courts. Its club consists of twenty-one members. Before the opening of each season the following officers are elected: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, two court oyerseers, a buyer, and a stockholder. During its entire career, Class'13 could boast of a strong team in interclass tournaments, winning college honors in all but one season.
