THE CANDIDATE SEMINARY SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS 1964 CLASS MOTTO: Whatever gift each of you may have re- ceived, use it in serv- ice to one another, like good stewards dispensing the grace of God in its varied forms. I Peter 4:10. DEDICATION In recognition of a saint Whose bold confession, sincere faith and loving concern has magnie fied Jesus Christ for the students he has served, we dedicate this book With thanksgiving to God and in high esy teem to came WW 99 AS YOU GO FORTH Dear Brethren in Chriyt, You have choyen a good motto. There remain; only thi; that it he Jet in motion. I wonder whether you a: a class, or a; individualx, realize what colomal proportion; such implementation could amume. Concia'er, first, how many individual men comprise the numher of your clan. Add--and this is of no Imall contequenceethe wine; to the roxter. That give; you the turn of the individual gifts ready to he put into operation. Try, if you will, to imagine the nature anal character of the individual gifts. Some are eminent; others, while not great, are genuine and valuable. Some are Jingular, others are of the common variety. But gift: there are a plenty. None has come away from our Lorelly dispemary of grace empty. Everyone ha; .romething to uxe for the henejit of thoxe with whom he lives and anociatey. Then, if you could determine quite accurately one gift which rank; above all other: in each individual, you would :ee a potential for an abundance of service toward fellow-rea'eernea' suficient for practically any need that might arice. It i; the hope and prayer of the Church that the Lord will place you and your wine; in 521617 a manner that your several talent: will come to hear upon the particular need; of the areas to which you are cent. In that way your rejpome to the call extended to you will become a real benediction to people of your flock and in your corn- ' munity. To he cure, the great Jingle axxet that all of you have in common is faith in our Lord Iesu: Christ a: your personal Savior. Out of that has come a sincere a'e- votion to His Word, the holy Scriptures, and a aletire to Jpreaa' ahroaal the Goxpel of Jaluation wherever, and a; long a;, the Lord would me you. For thi: hleming you are, I truct, deeply and humhly grateful. And in gratitude you are now minded to place your perxonal gifts, which the Jelfcarne grace ha; hectowea' upon you, into the SaviorCr Jeruice for the good of people, the redeemed object: of Hi: love. It i; a great privilege, indeed, to congratulate you upon IZICI? hlening; and achievementc, and to with you Godtpeed as you go forth from us into the vineyard of our Lord that i: waiting to be harvested. May the Holy S pirit, Who ha; aia'ecl you in the Jelection of your line motto, help you to keep it ever in your windy, and upon your hearty, to the end that the gift: with which you have been peculiarly en- dowed will not only he preterued, hut will become Jtrengthenea' and intenxifiea' through the comtant ana' unfailing uxe to which Goa ; grace will enahle you to put them. Your: in the Sauiorlc loue, S prin g yield, I llinoic March 20, 1964 W Our President, Dr. J. A. 0. Pre The First Day Behind Us Another year of Goalif time has drawn to a eloxe. I remember one of our profeuors once langhingly saying at the eloxe 0f the 15m day of a new school year, Well, the year i: almoyt over, now that we have the hrxt a'ay behind at? There is much truth to this, for time gee; 50 Jwiftly that we can hamll y heep up with its patting. All of which bring: me to the point that it 5667725 only yesterday that the clan of 1964 entered Springfield a5 a group of hrighteyetl, eager, and some- what anxiom novices, and now you are leaving as to enter into a life in which each year will pay; more quiehl y leaving it; amal 1th 0f ancompletea' tash; and anfaljillea' dreamy. God anal Hi5 people can looh to moyt of you for about forty years of service in His work. U56 theJe yeam, brethren, for Him and for them. U58 them wisely, use them well, we them meaningfully. Theye year; are Hi; gift: to you and to His church. You are entering the moxt worthwhile and stimulating career any man can enter. In exsenee every day will he Jpent in the service of a loving God for needy and troahleal men. Every Jermon, every meeting, every call, every action Jhoala' help achieve the fulfilling 0f thi; career. Mahe the moxt of your lives by serving Him faithfully and diligently. Preach His Word, love Hi5 people, glorify Him, for in 50 doing you will find happinejs and joy in every taxh every day. May God hleu you and go with you. W :4 I v 3;? -u N I wn- thLw r .. I 3 r , !a The lexicons tell us that koinoniu means sharing. ioint participa- tion. fellowship. etc. Ultimately. however. our detinitions must come from life. specifically life in the Body of Christ. 'Koinonia'. the theme of this year book. has been symbolized on the cover by the stylized w symbol of our Seminary. The three circles indicate the triune revelation of God through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. represented by the Cross and Crown. His glorious victory has liberated us from sin. death and the god of this world: the crushed serpent. God's grace to the world has brought us into koinonia with the Father. through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. In the Spirit we have koinonia with bones another in the world embracing Body of Christ. The Seminaryyprepares us to serve this Body. to strengthen its koinonia and inspire its mission. We hope this book will be your lexicon to recall some of the di- mensions of koinoniu you have experienced while studying at Concordia Seminary. In Koinoniu.
