Safari clothes! Jams! Bikinis! Overalls! Boots! All of these elements were a huge part of Spirit Week in 1987. Many students participat- ed in the various activities going on during the week. On Tuesday, it was desig- nated as Beach Day, the theme was Wipe Out the Wildcats. Wednesday, the stu- dents dressed up in safari clothes and were ready to Hunt the Wildcats. On Thursday, kids came as farmers and the theme was Harvest the Wildcats. Then on Friday, it was the traditional Red and Button Day. Even though their class float didn't make it to the parade, the senior class still had enough spirit to win the Spirit Stick. Winning the float competition was once again the soph- omores. The freshmen came in second, and last but not least were the seniors. Did you notice anything wrong? Where were the juniors? Let's just say they experienced a few problems. It never seems to fail that during Spirit Week most stu- dents act more crazy and school actually seems fun. That's why in 1987, Actions Spoke Louder than WordsI Panthers succeed to “Wipe Out the Wildcats!” 2 Splrit Week Above left “Hey dudes, the surf’s up” says Michael Kelly while Brad Culley looks on. Spirit Week 3 McDaniel is 1987 “Mr. Panther” anther Prowl 87 was bigger and better than ever before! The action packed evening featured everything from a death- defying bicycle act to a 100 foot long hotdog-like, air filled plastic sculpture. The StuCo sponsored event, (spear-headed by advisor Ken Meyer, president Traci Charbonneau. and vice-president Nicole Hanson), en- abled fourteen various clubs and organizations to raise money for their annual goals. Approximately $434 were divided up by the groups at the end of the night. Special attractions included; a FHA tricycle race, a C-club car bash, a Spanish club tortilla-flipping contest, and an OEA nerf-ball hoop shoot. Even the Sports club jail imprisoned many teachers and students throughout the night for misbehavior, penalties lasted ten minutes and a nominal charge enabled a person to leove early. Without question, the highlight of the evening was the ever-popular, action packed Mr. Panther contest. Nine supposedly talented'' seniors competed for the illustrious title with the judges finally selecting Andre McDaniel as its overall winner. Their selection was based on talent, legs, and workability within a group. Close runner-ups were juggling phenom Lenn Shipman and freestyle biker Tad Collins. Lenn pumped up the crowd with a juggling act to the song Wipe Out. Tad thrilled the crowd with his hi-tech bike by having people from the audience Idy on their backs, side by side, and jumping over them. He cleared not one, not two, but three humans who sacrificed their bodies for the benefit of the performance. Needless to say, the crowd went wild. People from all over North Central Kansas came to see our many activities ranging from athletic contests to arts crafts exhibits. An estimated 5,000 people attended the gala event. The day started with running and bicycle races early in the morning. At 11:00 AM the parade began which included several marching bands and many colorful floats. The parade was an- nounced by Randy Lagasse. After the parade people had a chance to explore Concordia’s downtown area, which was lined with booths and food stands. There were also craft exhibits from people all over the state. Entertainment was pro- vided throughout the day by talented groups and individuals from some of the surrounding counties and communities. The Fall Fest activities were wrapped up with a street dance that featured the band “After the Fact”. All activities ot Constitution Day culminated In a gigantic gala celebration on September 16th. The community wide celebration was held outdoors at the football stadium with approximately 2000 In attendance. The event started with the elementary children, dressed appropriately In red, white, and blue, each releasing red, white, and blue bal- loons. Rev. Sllkman, of the Concordia Ministerial Associ- ation, opened the ceremony. The VFW and American Le- gion presented the colors, and Traci Charbonneau, stu- dent council president, led the Pledge of Allegiance. City and county ottlclals, state representatives, members of the legal profession, and the Veterans were special guests. A mass choir of students from K-12 sang the Battle Hymn Of The Republic. Ken Heinz rehearsed and the led the mass choir. The Honorable Judge Denell Tacha of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals was the featured speaker. In fact, after a survey of inter- ested guys, personality was rated as the number one factor when going girl hunt- ing. Also, don't plan on mar- rying your high school sweetie either. Most guys, whether going steady or not. are always watching for the perfect girl . This is not saying that your man is going to be unfaithful, just careful. When asked about Bobbie Robbins and Shanna Alex- ander display their spirit during tod- dler day physical appearance, the general consensus is that it may make a good first im- pression. but that's where it ends, even a 57 , 36-24- 36'er doesn't always get the guy she wants. Guys! Do you have what it takes to a dream man? At CHS, the ladies have an idea of the perfect male. Start working out men. Muscles are a mustl Wimpy bodies are not Impressive. We like thin, tight stomachs and broad shoulders. Muscular arms and legs are exciting to see. Your size Is somewhat Irrelevant. It doesn’t really matter If you are big or small. However, there are quite a few ladles who prefer the gentlemen to be a little taller than ourselves. It you feel you have been cheated by the anato- my you were born with, don’t be discouraged. Personality Is what counts. It Is true that wom- en are push-overs for good looks, but also in- terested in what goes on inside of men. If you are thoughtful, polite, and sensitive to others’ feelings, you will win our hearts. If you do any- thing romantic, like send a rose or kiss us sweetly, we will be swept away. Most of us like dominance In men. We usually like to be taken care of and we like guys who are able to give us support in times of need, but don't smother us. For the third consecu- tive year, the Lady Pan- thers won the 4A State Volleyball championship! One of the highlights of the season included de- feating Chapman in the Concordia Invitational Tournament, after the Irish handed the Panthers their only two NCKL losses. Other outstanding perfor- mances included first place trophies at the Sa- betha and Belleville tour- naments as well as the Class 4A sub-state tour- nament. All of this was accom- plished with just two sen- iors, Erin Christensen and Jodi Stensaas. During the four years that Christen- sen and Stensaas partici- pated, CHS amassed an impressive 146-6 record and advanced to the state tournament every year. Both seniors were all- league selections. With 457 ace spikes and 202 blocks, Erin moved into first place on the NCKL All-Time Honor Roll. Sten- saas, a 5' 11 hitter, aver- aged 2.66 ace spikes per game. After a difficult sched- ule the Lady Cats reached their long term goal of capturing the illus- trious State Title. The Pan- thers simply dominated the tournament at Hes- ston by just losing one game in five matches. Concordia had beaten Louisburg earlier in the day in pool play, and had little trouble beating them in the championship match later that evening. “The two seniors con- tributed a lot the past four years, another state title was great for our program. -Coach Laur- eti Kitchener. Many narrow defeats did not detract from this years team image, ’’ stated coach George Meyer. The 1987-88 Panthers did battle through the season and came up with eleven losses decided by ten points or less. The Panthers were in striking distance in almost every game going into the final quarter, and played their 64 Athletics best until the buzzer went off, but just couldn't come up with the wins. Matt Stolzenburgh's all- around effort on the court earned him a well deserved reward. He was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates and received NCKL Hon- orable Mention. Tad Col- lins won the Ed Walter's Free Throw Award. He hit 76 percent from the line which ranked fifth in the league. Neal Hartshorn led the team in scoring with an average of 16.2 points per game and an NCKL Honorable Mention award. Several players will be remembered for what they excelled In; Neal’s three point bombs which seemed like rainbows, Matt's uncanny ways of grabbing a rebound, Trent’s breakaway speed for a layup, and Tad's sweet outside jumpers. It will truly be a season to remember. -Coach Doug Moore The CHS wrestlers could proudly “show off” their hard earned tro- phy after placing first in the 1988 Class 4A state tournament. After winning all eleven duals and the four tournaments of the season, the Panthers were sent unexpec- tantly to Eastern Regionals. The squad had concentrated on West- ern Kansas teams, such as Beloit, Colby, Oberlin, and Phillipsburg because for the last several years that is what CHS was considered to be, a western team. As It turned out Concordia did quite nicely, placing first overall. Nine out of twelve wrestlers went on to compete for the state title. They were Tony Dong-98, Da- mon Sterrett-105, Jon Dong-112, Matt Ford-119, David Canfield- 126, Mike McDaniel-138, Jim Workman-167, Carl Shuler-185, and Andre McDaniel-Hwt. At the ’87 summer camp the squad won the “unity” award and were one of four squads qualifying for nationals in Hawaii. What would half-time at basketball games be like without the pom pon girls? In addition to those commitments, she taught home management, child develop- ment, foods and nutrition, Interior decorating, and consumer buying. Pat sponsored pep club, FHA, cheer- leading, GAA, and all of the high school classes. An active life time member of NCEA, she served as building representative, district FHA advisor, and was on the state advi- sory board for FHA as chairman of home economics. HIGHLIGHTS: Serving as president of the Kan- sas Home Economics Association and the contacts I had with guest speakers, authors, and other spe- cialists enabled me to broaden my horizons. I'll miss and probably have to adjust to the fact that my corre- spondence with hundreds of people throughout the school year will be cut down to a few people to relate with.
