Table Of Contents Concordia Junior-Senior High School 436 West Tenth Concordia, Kansas 66901 913-243-2452 The halls were filled with madness during the week prior to homecoming at CHS. Spirit week was officially declared and students anxiously awaited the dress-up day sequences. Monday was Slob Day, Tuesday Jam's Day, Thursday Switch Day, and Friday Big Red Day. All were extremely successful and spirit was at an all time high. The downtown parade displayed floats from all classes as well as the football moms, cafeteria employees, football players and many others. An exciting 2418 victory over the Wamego Red Raiders capped a memorable Homecoming John Pounds tries to show off fellow team mate Steve Palmquist's legs during Switch Day of Spirit Week. Carl Shuler. Student Life 3 Student Life Styles Re-emerge After 25 years To a high school graduate of the 1950’s or early 60's the 1986-87 school year at CHS might bring back some interesting memo- ries. One could see styles popular twenty to thirty years ago present again in the mid-eighties. Fashion haircuts, like the flat- top and hair cut over the ears, were com- mon while long hair seemed to be a rarity. Old time canvas hightop tennis shoes along with big, baggy, and loud shirts were in along with dark fashion-design sung- lasses. It seemed like everything was a blast to the past, maybe our children will rob our closets wheh they are in high school a few years from now. The music from yesterday even made a comeback with the Beatle's song Twist and Shout” hitting the charts again after a twenty year layout. The movies Ferris Buellers' Day Off and “Stand By Me emphasized the use of older music with current ideas. The Beatle’s hit Twist and Shout'' hit the charts again after a twenty year absence. 4 Student Life Senior Robbie Ramsey is serious about this number. Here he is captured playing his horn during the Homecoming parade. Top photo: Cheerleaders Kristi Sherwood and Jari Hebert are all smiles with their fashion sunglasses. Mrs. Gowing knows students as an instructor of nutrition at the college level. Choices and variety were top of the list accomplishments for our school lunch program. Students at all levels were given choices for the first time. Menus were created to add color, flavor, and interest to the meal. It should be noted that no menu was served twice between August 1986 and May 1987. The most memorable school lunch meal was the Holiday Buffet where students were allowed to serve themselves from over 18 different menu items. We were in a lot of games that could have gone either way. Of our starters, seven were hampered by injuries throughout the year. -Coach Baumann Yes, the season was in- deed tough to take. Close losses to Clay Center, Superior, and Abi- lene left the Panthers disappoint ed. Key injuries, missed opportuni- ties, and heartbreaking penalties seemed to plague the team at criti- cal times of the season. Despite the circumstances, the football players gave the crowds plenty of exciting moments. They crunched the Wamego Red Raiders 22-20 in an action-paced homecoming games. Concordia's defense thwarted a last minute Raider drive to perserve the victory. Sen- ior standout Steven Palmquist led the Panthers in post season awards receiving NCKL all-confer- ence first team selections for of- fensive and defensive back. Steve was also recognized by the Tope- ka Daily Capitol and the Salina Journal for his outstanding ef- forts. Geoff Reusch won the Keith Christensen Award for Outstand- ing Senior Lineman while Dennis Kieffer's booming punts enabled him to be selected to first team all- league. Carl Schuler and Kent Hayes also received NCKL honor- able mention for defense and place-kicker respectively. Coach Robert Baumann gets an explanation from the official on a controversial call late in the fourth quarter of the Panther’s homecom ing game. 48 Football Few plays are more exciting than a kickoff return for a touchdown. Here senior Todd Read explodes down the field for a 67 yard TD. Coach Baumann intensifies the moment with plenty of sideline encouragement. CHS Homecoming festivities began on October 6, 1986 with a series of events continuing throughout the week. Prep- arations for floats were held in the even- ings at the Armory, and the eventual winner was the freshman class. The spirit stick was based on penny jar com- petition, sign up sheets for dress-up days, hall decorations, and the float. The class of '87 won the spirit stick. On Friday, October 10, the assembly was held in the high school auditorium with Jennifer Odette (the '82 Homecom- ing queen) speaking on the subject of school spirit. After the assembly the tra- ditional downtown parade followed. Before the game, Lisa Peltier was crowned 1986 Homecoming Queen. A Magnificent Performance One of the most magnificent of the Rodgers and Ham- merstein musical hits, “The King and I was performed by the Concordia High School Theater and Music Departments. The performances took place at 7 p.m. on November 13 and 14, in the Concordia High School auditorium. The setting was Siam in the year 1860, where the proud king had brought an English widow, Anna Leonowens, to serve as tutor of the children he had fathered with his numerous wives. Against the exotic background of this Oriental nation, the story was related on how the tutor's most interesting pupil eventually turned out to be the king himself, who learned to govern his country in a more enlightened way from Anna. Michelle Dobberstein (Anna Leonowens) starred in the production as the prim, witty and independable school- teacher., Co-starring with her was Curtis Knapp as the fiercely-scowling king who became so confused by the governess' insistence that a woman is a person, not a shattel. Shawn Hood (Tuptim) and Andre McDaniel (Lun Tha) were the two unhappy lovers who were forced to hide their love of one another. The singers were directed by Mr. Ken Heinz while Mr. Bud Meisel organized the pit orchestra. Overall direction was the responsibility of Mr. Ken Church and the show's pianist was Mrs. Sherry Reusch. Choreograpy was handied by Miss Andrea Graves, a senior at Concordia High School. As a team, Concordia placed first at Colby, first at Oberlin, second at Beloit, second at Phillipsburg, third at Regionals and eighth at State. Coach Moore's response to this years season was, “This year was a major stepping stone upward for Concordia Wres- tling. They were the first undefeated dual team in our history of which the average score was 52-11. The season also marked the first time a Concordia team captured two tourna- ment championships and two second place tournament fin- ishes. Lady Cats Win Sub-State Hard Work Pays Off This years team carried on the winning tradi- tion for the girls basketball program. They worked very hard and had a great attitude. It was a plea- sure and an honor to be associated with such a classy group of young ladies. -Coach Dick Switzer. The Lady Panthers again made their customary trip to the state tourney at Salina by scratching their way through an extremely tough league and sub-state tournament. They tied for the NCKL league title with a 7-3 record, finished first in the Beloit and Minneapolis tournaments, grabbed the Sub-State Title, and finished fourth place finish in the state tourney. Senior Kinda Erkenbrack's leadership on the court was an important ingredient to the team's success. She was named to the NCKL's First Team and was recognized by the Salina Journal as All- Area Honorable Mention. Junior Erin Christen- sen 's inside play enabled her to be selected to the All-League Squad as well and Second Team All- Area by the Salina Journal. Jodi Stensaas re- ceived Honorable Mention in the HCKL's post sea son coache's voting and sophomore sensation Alli- son Bigham received a rare accomplishment as a first Team Selection in her first year as a varsity starter. 86 Girls Basketball Senior Rita Haist sinks a jumpshot from the corner to help the Panthers beat the Beloit Trojans by two points. The 1986-87 Panthers did take their wins a long way despite the 4-17 season. At the annual basket- ball banquet Coach Meyer coined an old phrase, “I really feel that it's not the winning or the losing, it’s how you play the game. He went on to explain his philosophy on how basketball prepares young men for the future through competition and in the Pan- ther's program this preparation is what makes suc- cess inevitable. Dennis Kieffer's practice of the game paid him a pleasant surprise his senior year. He was recog- nized by NCKL coaches as an All-League First Team Selection. Dennis was also voted Most Valu- able Player by his teammates and led the tough league in freethrow percentage. The never quit attitude of junior Matt Stolzenburg was not un- noticed by the coaches, for his outstanding hustle he received the Most Inspirational Player Award. Sophomore Mike Kelley moved to Concordia rela- tively inexperienced with the game but his intense desire to learn and work hard won the respect of Coach Meyer and Coach Todd Geiman. They repaid his efforts with the Most Improved Player Award. Above Senior John Pounds goes up strong for a layup against Beloit. The year's theme for Spirit Week was USA Today. Competition for the Spirit Bell included dress up days, penny jar competition, and also a locker decoration contest. Tuesday was East Coast Day with the theme Slam Dance the Irish. Wednesday was Midwest Day with the theme victory in the Land of Oz. Boy's Terwis 105 Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” Prom 87 Rocks Prom 1987 was a big celebration of city lights, formal wear, and fancy decorations. DJ Tom Light from Winfield set up a tremendous display of speakers which rocked with requests from the seniors and juniors of CHS. The Prom's theme, “Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now”, high- lighted the gym atop a light-studded tophat above the DJ. Silver and black streamers rose from the walls of the gym to a center piece tophat thirty feet above the floor. A balloon drop midway into the evening's activities capped the night and the give-away of two Bon Jovi posters won by John Hinman and Wayde Watkins were raffled shortly thereafter. Five freshmen girls donated their time as serv- ers of the catered hors d'oeuvres by the Thunderbird Restaurant and Motel of Concordia. The 87 Prom was a night to remember. The camera s flash captured these couples dancing at Prom 87. Actually the only light in the gym was provided by the DJ’s strobes and the faint twinkle of the white flashing minature lights.
