Name brands big at CHS include Gitan, Brittaniz, Levi Strauss, Esprit, Ocean Pa- cific, Sunset Blues by Chic, Zena, Gasoline, Guess, Organically Grown and Gunne Sax. Clothing designs featured cropped pants and tops, brocade pants, jodphurs, Levi 501, Levi 505 pinstripes, shaker sweaters, oxfords, mini- skirts, turtlenecks, stirrup pants and polos. Most were patterned by flowers, pastels and plaids but definitely not neon. Fashion trends returned to the 50's. Accessories were outrageous including over- sized earrings, belts, necklaces and hats. Other popular wardrobe additions were rhinestone pins, hi-tops, flats, loafer, boots and pears. Van- derbilt, Le Jardin and Lauren were the main scents for women while the men wore Stetson, Polo and Chaps Musk. Popular among both sexes were Halston, Jordache and Night Musk. Hairstyles stayed basically the same with bobs, spikes, tails and lots of curls on both guys and gals. A number of guys wore no socks. Some students left high top basketball shoes unlaced. Whether or not you were classified as in , it was always important to be yourself and mabe your own trendsetter. 4 Year in Review Sight And Sound Look at them yo-yo's. That's the way ya do it. I feel fortunate in that I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best instructors as well as the best students to be found in any community. Back: Mr. Steve Neill, Terry Carlgren, Tom Walker, Jeff Burdett. KANSAN Photo Concordia High won the 4-A state title in debate for the second consecutive year. In describing the year Coach Steve Neill said, Everyone worked very hard and then received the recognition they deserved. The state team was composed of Amy Taylor and Rick Liby on the affirmative and John Jaster and Tom Walker on the negative. Alternates were Jeff Burdett and Terry Carlgren. The year's topic was Resolved that the federal govern- ment should establish a comprehensive national policy to protect the quality of water in the United States. Over all, it was difficult for the negative to win; it required a special expertise to develop effective rebut- tals. Philip Bentz was one of si to receive a National Presidential tray at the Sixty Fourth National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Philip received a $1,000 scholarship for his Dog Care and Training project. January 15,1929-Rpril 4,1968 A man of vision. A man of dreams. A man who was not afraid to work to make his visions and dreams come true. “I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of nuclear destruction. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.” — Martin Luther King, ac- cepting Nobel Peace Prize, December 1964. May his dreams live on. Issues And Events 45 School Life Why Students Study Around school you can hear various reasons why students do not study. Excuses range from I'm too tired to I don't feel like it to I could care. But there are also reasons why students study. They range from Dad won't let me have the car if I don't pass this test to I need to do well so I can get into the field I want to later. Serious studying can produce a number of benefits. It can improve the grade point average which can in turn qualify you for a scholarship. Studying can also keep you up late and curtail some of your social life. It can keep you from going to the movie or cruising around town. In the final analysis students study because that is the main business of school. They also realize that they must prepare for adult life responsibly. School can and usually is that ticket. Success in well chosen substantive classwork can help one earn a respectable income, but most importantly it can help one life a meaningful, purposeful life. In short, the students and the staff believe in the value of a good education. 46 Academics '85 Volleyball Takes It All! The senior volleyball girls have done a tremen- dous job of setting an example of what good vol- leyball is for all the younger players. This example will enable Concordia to stay on top because the players know it takes much work, determination and a spirit that can't be deflated. I hope the success these seniors have had will be a contribu- tion to their individual successes in life. Coach Laureli Kitchener said this in evaluating the sea- son. The team enjoyed a perfect season. They won the invitational tournaments at Belleville, Concordia and Sabetha. They went on to win NCKL, Sub- State and State. Over the past three years the six seniors compiled an incredible 110-3 record. These individuals won league honors. First team NCKL honors went to Julie Gallagher, Jacque Simpson, April Chavey, Rita Haist and Brenda Bu- dreau. Kinda Erkenbrack received honorable mention. Coach Lyle Pounds was proud of his entire team, but he was especially pleased with Roger Koester taking first at the 4- A state meet. Koester was recog- nized with All-League and All- State honors as well as going un- defeated throughout his final year at CHS. At an invitational meet Roger broke the school record with a time of 9:43. ''The girls team was young, and for most it was their first two-mile race, Coach Pounds said. The girls continued to remind themselves that when things got tough, they were always capable of dig- ging down just a little deep- er and coming up with that extra effort, Coach Devine Montoya said in evaluating the 1985 season. At the end of the season these nine received major letters: Autumn Christians, Suzy DeBauch, Salena Lo- vette, Regan Erickson, Janae Watson, Linda Barnett, Mi- shele Campbell and Sherry Larkins. The varsity took sec- ond at Clay Center and Con- cordia, third at Hays and sixth at home. All in all, it was a respectable year. Girls Tennis 51 Football Rebuilds For The Future The Panthers lost 20 of 22 starters from the previous year. Coach Robbie Baumann said that lack of experience played an important role in the early season. CHS did break a five-year losing streak to Chapman with a 16- 0 romp. There was three game winning streak in mid-season including a Homecom- ing victory. The team entered playoffs with a respectable 4-2 record but ran into unde- feated Beloit and strong Abilene and Ells- worth teams. The season record stood at 4-5. David Christensen and Todd Read won NCKL honorable mention as defensive backs; Brock Harshorn as place kicker. The Keith Christensen Outstanding Senior Line- man Award went to Brian Peltier. People hang up pic- tures, calendars, cork boards, memo boards, etc. One of the popular methods is to use contact paper, which can be purchased at discount stores for about $2.12 a roll. The average locker requires two rolls. The contact paper should be exciting and reveal something about one's personality. Installment time is about two hours for applying contact paper, hanging pictures and other accessories. Another matter is to either buy or make shelves for your locker. You can buy ready-made shelves for around $5.25. You can also use milk or juice crates. Shelves enhance the appearance and add a certain ah to the style. When selecting colors for your locker, try to get everything to match. Dull patterns are out. You should need to wear shades when you open your locker. Decorations for the interior should reflect your personality. Pictures of you in activities, dressed up or just funny add nicely. In summary, decorating your locker is fun. It does take some time and skill in putting up the contact paper without getting wrinkles in it. Your locker is something to be proud of so take your time and do a good job! We started out the season very well, but due to some untimely injuries the second half of the season wasn't nearly as successful. We were still able to finish 9-5 in our duels and be league Co-champs. This accomplishment speaks well for the depth of our squad. The season was highlighted with Dave Canfield winning his second consecutive state championship. Coach Doug Moore evaluated the year in this manner. The wrestlers participated in six tourneys. As a team they placed third at Clay Center, third at Oberlin, ninth at Beloit, sixth at Philipsburg, ninth at regionals and sixteenth at state. David Canfield, who made the Salina Journal All-Area Wrestling Team and won the CHS Outstanding Wrestler Award, won his second state title, this one at 119. Paul McGinnis at 132, who took third at regionals, qualified for state. 1985-86 Wrestling Season CHS OPP 60 Ellsworth 5 40 S.E. Coach Dick Switzer evaluated the season this way. Led by a super senior class whose career record was 74-3, the Panther girls repeated as 4-A State Champions. This was probably the best talent we have ever had and they worked so well as a team that it made them extremely hard to defend. What made this year so much fun was not only were they great athletes, but also super young ladies who are a credit to the community. The girls posted a 25-1 record in their quest for their second consecutive state championship. In addition to State they won the Beloit tournament, were undefeat- ed NCKL champs for the third straight year, won Sub- State and finished second at the Minneapolis tourna- ment, suffering their only loss to Canton Galva. These seniors won honors. April Chavey: All-NCKL, Salina All-Area tournament first team. Salina All-Area first team, Wichita All-Tournament first team. NCKL Co-Champions The experts predicted that the Panthers would finish low in the league standings. The 7-3 record gave them a share of the NCKL crown with Abilene and Clay Cen- ter. The highlights were upset victories over Chapman and the overtime win over Beloit, undefeated at the time. Coach George Meyer commented, Rejecting the ex- perts' lowly pre-season prediction, the 85-86 Panthers battled to a share of the NCKL crown. This placed them with only a few in the CHS annuals. The Panthers were thus able to sit on the porch of the castle, symbolic of the league championship. David Christensen, winner of the CHS Outstanding Player and Ed Walters Free Throw awards, made the NCKL team and the Salina Journal All-Area first team. Chris Samuelson made the league first team. Jay Cail- teux made league honorable mention. The Panthers went to the semi-finals of the Sub-State and fought valiantly against Beloit. One Acts Well Received Challenging, thought-provoking, enter- taining, international were just a few words describing A CHS TRILOGY dra- matic presentation and A FOREIGN AF- FAIR, a cuisine delight of tasting many ethnic foods. THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW by C.S. Lewis has Digory and his friend Polly go to the magical lands of Narnia by the use of rings created by Uncle Andi. In their travels they encountered the evil in Queen Jadis and awaken her from a deep sleep. While trying to get rid of her, Digory and Polly touch rings and bring her back to the real world which she tries to take over with her evil magic, but good prevails over evil. I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY by Celeste Raspanti is based on stories writ- ten by the children of Terezin during the Holocaust in Europe. They base their lives on today rather than tomorrow. In spite of almost certain death in a concentration camp, they still fall in love, create a news- paper and cope with a seemingly unbear- able situation. Moliere's classic TARTUFFE is set in Paris in 1663. The comedy centers around the attempts of the title character who is con- stantly making fools of the aristocratic class. The farce is a slapstick about man- ners and attitudes of the very rich in France. 76 One Acts, Drama A CHS TRILOGY Cast and Crew Front: Chad Leonard, Robert Owen (Bear), Jennifer Buss (Bird) Zorione Goitia (Monkey), Mr. Ken Church, Jesse Ashland (Rabbit), Andrea Graves, Monica Blanton, Greg Aytes, Earl Archer. Graduation May 18, 1986 Mr. Van Kooten Commencement Speaker The highly anticipated day finally arrived for the 118 member of the 104th graduating class. At the afternoon Baccalaureate in CHS Auditorium Lutheran Pastor Gregory J. Uthus prayed the invocation and benedic- tion. The A Cappeila choir under Mr. Ken Heinz sang I'll Walk with God and El- Shaddai . Pastor Jerry Pence of the Wesleyan Church challenged the class to throw their caps over the wall of fear and doubt and to moti- vate themselves for radical commitment to and belief in Christ. He explained with ex- amples how with success they could beat the inevitable criticism coming with such a choice. He urged them to lead adventurous lives of discipleship. Retiring Guidance Director, A. G. Van Koo- ten delivered the address at the evening commencement in the stadium. In his chal- lenge to the graduates to face the future he reviewed the many contributions of pre- vious generations in many areas of life. He went on to list the problems still needing resolution as he introduced the seniors to the future. He alluded to the Biblical parable of the talents and quoted the poetic line You have to climb the mountain to appreci- ate the view. Principal Larry M. Nelson presented the class of 1986 to the USD 333 Board of Education for graduation. President Kenneth R. Esau and Superintendent Dr. John D. Watson pre- sented the diplomas. Debbie Neel was vale- dictorian. Co-Salutatorians were Roger Koester and Veronica Wilson. The band un- der Mr. Bud Meisel played the processional and recessional. Rev. Unique Plan For 85-86 Student Council began the year with Panther Prowl Night, a new project, on Sept. 17. This was set up to inform underclassmen about the various clubs and organizations here at CHS. The next major project was Homecoming. Spirit Week was purposely totally different from any previous year. The reason was that StuCo felt it was a special and different group. It wanted to be remembered as being unique. As an example, note the picture at the right where faculty mem- bers Mrs. Judy Zimmerman and Miss Nancy Sherif- fius participated enthusiastically on Black and Blue Day. Winter Sports Festival was also a major project. Spirit Week was again fun and unique. All in all, StuCo felt they had a busy and successful year. UNITY I dreamed I stood in a studio and watched two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child's mind, and they fashioned it with care. One was a teacher; the tools he used were books and music and art; One a parent with a guiding hand, and a gentle, loving heart. Day after day the teacher toiled, with touch that was deft and sure, While the parent labored by his side And polished and smoothed it o'er. When at last their task was done, They were proud of what they had wrought. For the things they had molded into the child could neither be sold nor brought. And each agreed he would have failed if he had worked alone. For behind the parent stood the school, And behind the teacher, the home. You could look to the sky for Halley's Comet or in the halls of Concordia High for stars this. Halley's return after a three-quarter century absence captured the world's imagination from N Jv. to April. The two previous comet appearances noted Mark Twains's birth in 1835 and his death in 1910. Edmond Halley first predicted the comet's reappear- ance in 1758. Chinese chronicles recorded it in 240 B.C. Important historical events during Halley's ap- pearances were the siege of Jerusalem by the Ro- mans in 66 A.D., the conquests of Genghis Khan in 1222 and the battles European Christendom against the Ottoman Turks in 1456. A stellar event this year was the naming of an aster- oid KANSAS by the KU graduate David Tholen. The International Astronomical Union did just that. This ten mile wide rock is one of 4,000 asteroids in our solar system. The HURKARU staff suggests there are also stellar performers at CHS. The theme STELLAR PAN- THER suggests the discovery of a new comet called THE GREAT PANTHER. Former CHS princi- pal Mr. Don Musick drew the cartoon cover for our yearbook, envisioning such a theory. We staff members hope you enjoy the use of imagination in this yearbook. We have tried our creative best to present Concordia High School in a new way. -HURKARU Staff 152 Closing
