TIME TEAR The eventful year saw the landslide re-election of President Ronald Reagan. The Democratic vice-- presidential candiate Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run for that office. Rev. Jesse Jackson was the first black to make a serious run for a party's presidential nomination. “Yuppies was a new politi- cal label for a sizeable voting bloc. Kansas Senator Robert Dole was elected Senate majority leader. Many farmers continued to feel the ill effects of a lagging agricultural economy. In international affairs India's Indira Gandhi was as- sassinated. Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa won the Nobel Peace Prize for challenging the apart- heid policy in that country. Many people responded generously to the famine in Ethiopia. The Statue of Liberty underwent major renovation. Disarmament talks resumed again. In sports the Detroit Tigers beat the San Diego Pa- dres in the baseball world series. In football Super- bowl XIX San Francisco beat Miami. Trivia pursuit was a popular party game. Parts is parts was a catchy tv ad. Who ya' gonna call? Ghostbusters! was a popular movie song. When Doves Cry sold the largest number of singles. Students came to school carrying books, etc. in tote bags, duffle bags and backpacks. MTV, a musical channel was sometimes called the pipeline of cool . The punk look had some appeal challeng- ing the current conformity and conservatism. Local- ly, the district patron and staff did an in-depth self- improvement study in the North Central evaluation. The National Honor Society reorganized during the second semester. Cloud Country Community College, whose initial classes were at CHS, celebrated its twentieth anni- versary. Since cruising is a favorite pas- stime, students must learn the proper technique. The prime time to cruise is from 8 pm to midnight. The cruisers should begin their route at Larry's and head east down Main Street. If hunger pains seize you while traveling down Main Street, you can make a quick dash to The Store. When you reach the stop light at Main and Highway 81, you have three op- tions. You may continue east and turn around at the Pizza Hut, you can go south on 81 and turn around in TG Y parking lot or go south to cruise by the college. The majority of your journey down 81 should be spent in the center lane so you can have the best view of oncoming traffic. If you decide to take the Alco-Pizza Hut route, you can add a little ex- citement to the evening by trying to drive your car through the Alco sign without scraping the sides. For you amateur cruisers, here are a few tips from the professionals. 1) Before you leave your driveway, be sure your car is equipped with these necessities: a horn (that works), plenty of tapes to be played in your blaring stereo and an ashtray full of change for emer- gency food stops and a full tank of gas. 2) It is of the utmost impor- tance to honk if honked at, espe- cially if he she is good looking. 3) And finally, never cruise alone. HAPPY CRUISING! If you think your parents looked funny in their yearbook, wait till your kids see yours. The halls of CHS featured many differ- ent fashions and fads throughout the year. Probably the single most popular piece of clothing this year was Levis 501 shrink-to fit button fly jeans. Whether male or female, nearly every stu- dent owned a pair. As for turtlenecks, there were a lot more of these too and it was not because there were people with a bad case of hickies. Tur- tlenecks were a popular item to wear under sweat- shirts and sweaters. A common place to shop for this year's over-size shirts was dad's closet. These outfits were fin- ished with a single or dou- ble wrap belt. They say shoes make the outfit ; students selected a variety of styles to com- plete their wardrobes. High tops were not just seen trodding down a basketball court and pumps were not just for dress, but were worn in a variety of colors with jeans. Other accessories includ- ed gold add-a-bead neck- laces, a glove with the fin- gertips cut out, earrings and beads in bright and pastel colors to coordi- nate with outfits, neon purses, socks, etc. 32 Trends USD 333 Board Of Education At The Helm USD 333 BOARD Front: Mr. Mike Johnston, Mr. Richard Radcliffe (vice-president), Mr. Kenneth Esau (president), Mrs. LaVeda Hobbie, Dr. James Douglass, Mrs. Alberta Neel. The team took first in tne Concordia triangular against Marysville, and Clay Center, October 13. At this meet, Andra Watts placed second in the number one singles, and Sheila Brummett took third in the number two singles. Our J.V. team enjoyed a most successful season and have high hopes of continuing with their winning ways next year, said Coach Montoya. This team had a lot of spirit and brought home many victories. 44 Girls Tennis Koester Wins NCKL In Cross Country! Boys Cross Country: Front: Paul McGuinnis, Anders Krook, Jeff Kymer. Back: Coach Lyle Pounds, Rod Haist, Larry Naillieux, Lee Stanford, Roger Koester. The 1984 Cross Country season was filled with excitement and challenge. According to Coach Lyle Pounds, the boys' season high- lighted the second place titles at Concordia and Marysville. The team was led by Roger Koester who won many of the two-mile races. At the league meet, the team took fourth and Koester earned All-League Honors by winning the NCKL. The flu kept Roger Koester from participating successfully at regionals, Pounds also commented. The girls team continues to grow and improve. Like the boys, they did well at Concordia and Marys- ville placing third. The girls brought home a fifth place title from the NCKL meet and a seventh place title from regionals to con- clude their season. Volleyball 47 Twenty Seconds From The State Playoffs The 1984 season will not soon be forgotten. After two initial losses to Clay Center and Chapman, the Panthers won the next five. It appeared as though CHS would go to State Playoffs when unbeaten Ellsworth rallied in the last 20 seconds and won the hard-fought game 17-16. In spite of that heart-breaking loss, the Panthers played a spirited final game at Sacred Heart, winning 39-0. CHS finished 3-2 in the NCKL a third place tie and 6-3 overall. In season play CHS scored 227 to the opponent's 90. Seven made the NCKL All- League team: Robert Davis, David Christensen, Roger Hardaway and Scott Gallagher on offense; Chad Regnier, Roger Istas, Chuck Knapp and Robert Davis on defense. Jim Waters and Roger Istas made honorable mention. Chuck Knapp and Roger Istas won the Keith Christensen award. Chuck Knapp made the All-Area first team as line- backer and offensive tackle. Robert Davis made the second defensive team. Coach Robbie Baumann evaluated this way. This football team was one of the best for quite some time at CHS. The players showed their true char- acter in coming back in the Sacred Heart game after losing to Ellsworth. I am very proud of this team. (25-0 Record) Wouldn't stop till we reached the top typified this year's girls basketball season. Their entry into state competition was for the fourth consecutive year. After finishing in 4-3-2 order in previous year, it almost seemed inevitable to stop the girls from reaching their goal of 4-A state championship. This was only the third time in state history of girls basketball that the champs also enjoyed a perfect season. This year's team had an astonishing 25-0 record. When asked how he felt about the team, Coach Switzer answered This was the hardest working team I have ever had. When you have talent and work hard, you will be successful. Coach Switzer was named state Coach of the year by the Topeka Capitol-Journal and area Coach of the Year by the Salina Journal. The perfect season saw the girls take the NCKL crown and invitational tournaments at Beloit and Minneapolis as the girls had decided early to Go for the Gold . In awards Andra Watts made the NCKL first team, the first 4- A All-State team in Wichita, second All-Area team in Salina and third All-State team in Topeka. Basketball Highlights It was one of those off-years for boys basketball this season. There were times when things went well and then there were times of tough luck. There was a number of games where CHS was in the ball game till the closing minutes. At season's end the record was 6-15 and a fifth place finish in the NCKL. Coach Erik Rasmussen said, We tried to shoot to hit and play to win. At Sub-State CHS gave Chapman a valiant fight and even led in the second half before losing in the closing minutes. It was a season in spite of losses where many could take pride and satisfaction in their efforts. In awards David Christensen made the NCKL All- League team and won the Ed Walters Free Throw Award. Ron Gieber won honorable mention on the NCKL All-League team and was named the Out- standing Senior Basketball Player. In eight seasons at CHS as head coach, Rasmussen became the winnin- gest boys basketball coach in CHS history with a 106- 65 record. The refreshments included pur- ple punch and sheet cake along with mementos of party umbrellas and napkins. The Bonnevilles of Kansas City provided the dancing music. Head Junior sponsor Mr. Jack Mitchell and Junior president Mark Lesperance organized the event and the elaborate decora- tions. The attire featured guys in tuxs or suits with ties; the girls wore either tea-length or formal dresses. Many students enjoyed the enduring tradition at Prom '85. Graduation Day Is Marvelous! May 19, 1985 was the long-anticipated day for the class of 1985. At the 3 p.m. Baccalaureate exercise in the auditorium Tammy Aubushon of the United Methodist Church gave the in- vocation and benediction. The a cappella choir sang. Father Theron Hughes of the Episcopal Church addressed the class on the historical meaning and purpose of baccalaureate. He described the original medieval exercise as one designed to inspire academic graduates to use their new knowledge in the practice of the gospel of peace and to wear the shield of faith and integrity in meeting that challenge. Father Hughes reminded students that the gift of knowledge given by their teachers was something no one could take away from them. He emphasized to the graduates that the intellect should be treated as a gift from Cod which they should accept and develop with discipline and a sincere desire to learn. The 7 p.m. one hundred third commence- ment ceremony at the stadium was an exciting moment for the 113 graduates. The a cappella choir and the band provided the music. Lyn- ette Dyson and Ken Johnston presented an original composition specially suited for the occasion. Pastor Darrell Silkman of the Pres- byterian Church gave the invocation and benediction. In his commencement address Dr. Theodore A. Wilson, Professor of History at Kansas Uni- versity, advised the graduates that many of their choices in the future would be unex- pected, but that they should prepare for that future by continuing their life-long learning process with a high quality education and a sense of responsibility. Principal Larry M. Nelson presented the class of 1985 to the USD 333 Board of Education. President Kenneth R. Esau and Superinten- dent Dr. John D. Watson presented the diplo- mas. In years to come students will re- member the times by the songs they played. Spending all those great days in high school with their friends is a hard habit to break . We had the teachers go- ing round and round till they thought the would go insane when the wild boys explained Teacher, Teacher , we are the young. As teachers piled on homework, groans of We're not gonna take it echoed in the halls. We were bouncing off the walls as we tried to maintain our self con- trol . Students found themselves walking on a thin line as they snoozed in the library, reminding their friends to Wake me up be- fore you go . Wheels are turn- ing at 3:05 in the parking lot as students drive away yelling I can't drive 55. Guys phone their girls to say Hel- lo again and I just called to say I love you . Coming in late after the dance where we bopped till we dropped , we gave our par- ents clever alibis . Seniors could be heard say I feel for you to the freshmen just starting high school. The victims of the future were advised to prepare for four years of tor- ture . Seniors exclaimed I'm so excited as they began to strut down the halls totally out of touch with the underclassmen. As graduation neared, they shout- ed Let's go crazy as they consid- ered themselves the lucky one . Although they were leaving, they would still be missing you as they journey through life, knowing the best is yet to come. School Life 125 CHS Innovations This Year There were a number of innovations at CHS this year, but two of the more signifi- cant ones were the organization of a Quiz Bowl and a community effort to provide a more desireable form of senior party. On April 18 the first round of CHS Quiz Bowl occurred. A double-elimination tournament of five intraschool teams be- gan. This event was a group project of National Honor Society. A round consisted of 15 questions in six categories: English, social science, fine arts foreign language, vocational and pot- pourri. CHS faculty wrote the questions. The faculty committee for the event was Mr. Michael Aytes, Mr. Clark Talley, Mrs. Eileen Hart, Mrs. Jewelda Scofield and Mrs. Sarah Caldwell. The other event was the senior party, an all-night bash on May 15 when classes were completed. The Optimists, Jaycees, merchants, patrons and parents organized this non-alcoholic party. The fun started with th Optimists sponsoring a luau at 7 p.m. at the airport park. The jaycees then conducted a mock casino night at the ar- mory. At the door each person received script money. An auction followed with donated prizes from the merchants. Movies ran contin- ually all night, donated by Bi-Low Video and 81 Video. DJ Eddie Griswall from Newton provided music and lights for dancing from 12 to 3. At dawn senior par- ents prepared a hearty breakfast of scram- bled eggs, bacon, sausage, homemade rolls and fruit. 126 Quiz Bowl, Senior Party Cloud County Community College 516 WASHINGTON CONCORDIA. Mrs. Hotaling has taught English at CHS in a very competent, professional manner. In her own quiet, low- profile manner she has reached and touched many stu- dents. Her primary teaching ambition has been to create opportunities for learning in a caring atmosphere. As she leaves Concordia High, her many former students and colleague friends will miss her support, interest and wit. Let us use an old Latin toast Ad Multos Annos which translates May she have many more happy years. Staff Sign-Off As we conclude the 1985 Hur- karu, we wish to thank the stu- dent body and staff who cooper- ated with us and yearbook's assm- bly. We wish also to thank our ad- vertizes for their confidence in us. We urge our readers to sup- port these companies and indivi- duals. Special thanks also to KNCK-KCKS radio station for its support. We have tried our best to capture the highlights of the year. We are sorry about any unintentional mis- take or omission. We sincerely hope all of you enjoy this year- book. It has been fun preparing it for you. -Hurkaru Staff International Youth Year 1985 Participation, Peace, Development Young people everywhere are aspiring to a world of justice and opportunity. They are seeking remedies to the poverty that besets much of humankind and an end to the arms race. I believe that no institution or government should ignore the significance of what they are trying to say. Javier P6rez de Cuellar, Secretary-General, the United Nations 148 Conclusion
