The Doublespeak slo- gans of Big Brother Who Is Always Watching are well known. WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. All of this is interesting when placed next to Wendy's now famous commercial asking, Where's the beef? This simple question is perhaps the American public's reaction to media hype and exag- gerated advertising. Care bears, Boy George, punk rock, fried , awesome , stabbed , the Olympics and a host of other things added variety and color for Concordia High students, the ancient Roman poet once observed, Times change and we change with them. The adage still applies. School is a composite of many people, events and things. In an analogous way it is much like a patchwork quilt design or the many angle choices available to a photographer who wishes to capture the personality or essence. In any event, as the French say, ''Viva la difference! Panther Patch 31 T HE YEAR CHS students wore a variety of clothing; jeans were obviously very popular. Shirt designs fea- tured Ocean Pacific, concert, casual sports, Izod and pin stripes. Sweaters, especially Argyle, were popular. Common footwear included Nike tennis shoes and cowboy boots. Many students wore letter jackets or red nylon or silk CHS sports ones. Students spent their recreation time riding around , playing video games, going to movies, and just messing around . Students listened to many different types of music. Many also held part-time jobs. Especially popular were the homely Cabbage Patch Kids, grumpy Garfield, friendly Smurfs, and brazen Mr. T. Class mugs were particularly in de- mand during the magazine sales. The school lunch menu on Oct. 11, reflecting computer culture, included power source burger, printout potatoes, vegetable chips, apple bytes and basic milk. Mr. Richard Kraft helps Yuki Ohhashi of japan with computer programming. 32 Trends The year included many extremes. The hot summer drought had 20 days reaching the century mark. There also was the 161 consecutive hours of sub-zero tempera- tures in the coldest December ever. Po- litically, many surprises occurred: the So- viet shooting down of KAL 007 flight, the Beirut turmoil, the Grenada invasion and the deployment of Pershing II missies in Europe. There also was the bittersweet Nobel Peace Prize recognition of Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa. NASA celebrated its 25th anniversary with such Space Shuttle firsts like Dr. Sally Ride, the first woman astronaut, and Guion Bluford, the first black one. A NA- TION AT RISK called for educational re- form. Olympiad XXIII focused interna- tional attention on Sarajevo and Los An- geles. The Baltimore Orioles won the baseball World Series. The football Los Angeles Raiders won Superbowl XVIII. Locally, Concordia celebrated the renova- tion of downtown streets and sidewalks with a Fall Fest on Sept. 24. First Bank and Trust marked 100 years of business in the community Oct. 30. Mr. Mike Aytes be- came the new CHS vice principal. Four new computer terminals were installed to update that program. The Sisters of St. Joseph celebrated a century in Concordia Oct. 15. The girls fin- ished the season with an outstanding record of 33-2. Coach Laureli Kitchener attributed the team's suc- cess to intelligent girls, a new successful offense and defense, more matches and a strong desire to con- tinuously improve and win. Earlier in the season the volleyball team won the Belleville Tournament, the Concordia Invitational, the Sabetha Tournament and tied for first in league with Clay Center with a 9-1 record. The Panthers had three girls chosen unanimously to the NCKL All-League team: Denae Stensaas, Colleen Butler, and April Chavey. Melinda Girard and Jacque Simpson won honorable mention. The young Panthers were led by first year Coach Robert Baumann. The season started slowly with CHS losing the first four games. The Panthers then beat Wamego on the fifth week of the season and two weeks later stunned previously state-ranked Abilene 24-7 in the first round of district play. Coach Baumann described the season in this manner. Even though it was a tough year, the kids never gave up. We had a chance to win almost every game and we im- proved each week. We were in a tough district and I think we beat the best team-Abilene. Finishing with a 2-3 league record and 2-7 overall, the Panthers had eight players receive All-League honors. Scott Baumann made the first team on offense and honor- able mention on defense. Chuck Knapp received first team defensive honors. Roger Hardaway, Roger Istas, Ke- vin Meyer, and Robert Davis were honorable mention on offense. Jake Sorell, Chad Regnier, Doug Davidson, and Kevin Meyer were honorable mention picks on defense. Kevin Meyer received the Keith Christensen Award at the annual Football Awards Banquet. Chuck Knapp was named to the third team in the Salina Journal All-Area team. The juniors won the spirit Stick in the forty-sixth annual event with their involvement on Backward Day, Dress Up Day and Red Day. The afternoon assembly, a departure from the traditional coronation ceremony, had students and teachers participating in indoor games in the gym. The juniors also won the float competition in the parade downtown at 3 p.m. The Panther football team fought bravely before falling 13-7 to the Superior Wildcats. The highlight was the evening crowning of Queen Laura Morrison. A dance concluded the evening as the Knight of the Turntable spun records. Jody Bramwell described Homecoming this way. First Trip To State The 1983-84 Panther basketball season was the cli- max of a three year rebuilding process at CHS. Lead by five senior starters, the Panthers finished the sea- son 23-1 with the only loss coming in the first round of the State Tournament at the hands of two-time defending state champs Topeka Hayden. This year's team not only had the best record in school history, but also became the first boys basketball team to reach the State Tournament. Coach Rasmussen commented, This group demon- strated, in my opinion, the greatest degree of team- work, both offensively and defensively, that I have ever been a part of with no weak links. Each person knew his job and did it to the best of his ability. This team's quest for excellence, both on and off the court, was a joy to behold and is something I am glad I got to be a part of and something I will always remember. Freshmen Girls Establish A Record Of 8-4 BB Tournament 65 '84 Basketball Tournament Fever Sub-State tournament frenzy reached its peak March 3 at the finals here at CHS. In spite of a storm outside, the thunderous cheering of a ca- pacity crowd inside inspired the girls to rally from a 12 point deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter and beat Sacred Heart 51-48. Later the boys, tied at half time, exploded in the third quar- ter and also beat Sacred Heart 62-50. The boys' victory gave them their first trip to state in the school's history. State Basketball Tournament Week was hectic, ex- citing, exhilarating, heart-breaking. The Thursday pep assembly established the pace. The girls met Hayden of Topeka at Marymount College and handily won 73-48. Later at the Salina Bicentennial Center the boys also met Hayden. In a hard fought contest, the boys rallied in the closing minutes but came up short one point 40-39. This heart- breaking loss ended the 23 game winning streak. At Friday's semi-finals the girls beat Basehor 54- 39. In the championship game Saturday March 10, the girls met Andale and lost 67-63. The girls fin- ished the season with a 24 game winning streak and only two losses. He is only concerned with making money, hoarding as much as he can. His former partner in business died seven years previous on Christmas Eve. At the beginning Marlowe comes back to haunt Scrooge and warns him to change his life. Marlowe's ghost tells him to be generous with his money because money cannot buy a man happi- ness. Scrooge shrugs off his friend's advice. Later he is visited by three spirits: The Ghost of Christ- mas Past, Present and Future. Scrooge eventually sees the error of his ways and realizes the true joy and meaning of Christmas in giving to others. Two young men, Beryl Evans and Carol Gray, take a vacation at the cottage of a close friend. Problems arise when the friend unintentionally loans the use of the cottage to another set of friends for the same two weeks. Warren Wilson, his personal servant and a close friend, also arrive at the cottage the same day. War- ren, a play critic, has accepted an acting role in a new play and feels he must actually live the part to do a good job in the play. Warren pretends to be blind like his character and assumes Beryl and Carol are servants he has hired for two weeks. We regret any unintentional error or omission. We wish to thank our subscribers, advertisers, the student body and the staff who assisted us in any manner. We have tried to develop a theme which incorporated the past in the form of tradition with the technology of today. We then tied this to a vision for tomorrow.
