Staff 11 A Review Of The Year What an interesting year of dramatic contrasts! Inflation went down, but double digit unemployment played havoc with many lives. The local agri- cultural economy saw depressed farm prices and an extremely wet growing season. Sports fans enjoyed a topsy- turvy World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals emerging as victors. Movie fans were inspired by the theme song of Rocky III . The football strike changed the habits of many sports fans on Sunday afternoon and Monday Night. The Tylenol scare frightened the gen- eral public. The off year elections showed mixed reaction to the Reagan- omics. Jobs became a major issue. Most citizens were greatly relieved after November 2 when they no longer had to listen to or watch political com- mercials. Video addiction was especially evident in the arcades as Pac Man and Donkey Kong reigned supreme, consuming both opponents and operators' quar- ters. Speilburg's E.T.'s quest to phone home captured the hearts of the big- gest movie audience ever. The movie Gandhi and the message of non-vio- lence made its impact. Many music fans enjoyed Alabama's Mountain Music, along with many other songs. This year's fashions kicked with such styles as ruffled blouses, straight legged pants and the popular prairie skirts and petticoats that created the country look . Jeans with well known designer names were an always favorite. Con- cert shirts were tough along with Nike tennis shoes. The guys wore jeans with assorted hind pocket designs, ox- fords and polo shirts. Permanents cov- ered many heads of both gals and guys. Fads hit the scene with friend- ship pins and crazy shoestrings. Smurfs and Garfield the cat were favorites on notebook covers. Fads came and went, but genuine fashions stayed for awhile. These pictures show many people being themselves. 12 Commentary Logizomechanophobia Some people in our society have the condi- tion of logizomechanophobia which is a technical name for the fear of computers. Concordia Junior-Senior High staff members work to dispel that fear. Here Jolene Cassel and Jeff Bray of the Computer Generation are acquainting themselves with the Silicone Society wonder, microchips and program- ming statements. 10 ? WELCOME TO COMPUTERS 20 ? NAME ; N$ 30 ? PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE, N$ 40 END This year students were particularly fond of decorating lockers, going beyond the bare essentials such as books, jackets, etc. Some added personalized touches. Interi- ors included such items as brightly painted milk crates, wrapping paper, contact paper, photographs, carpet- ing, etc. Left: Marty Plunkett and Mike Lowers work on the house project. Trends 13 Students And Alumni Love The Panthers! Felis Concolor The staff did a little research on the technical scientific name for panther. Biology teacher, Mr. Ron Shipman helped with the correct nomencla- ture. The Audubon Nature Encyclopedia gave Fe- lis Concolor as the name for the panther, cougar, painter, mountain lion, puma, and a catamount (sometimes called a catamountain). Some authori- ties also recognize the name Puma Concolor for this group of animals. Concordia Community Pride And Progress Concordia is an agricultural shopping center nes- tled in the Republican River Valley in North Cen- tral Kansas. This heartland is much like Willa Cath- er described in her prairie novels, especially My Antonia. The grain elevators provide a skyscraper effect as they tower over the rolling plains. The trademark of the community consists of pride and progress. The Chamber of Commerce slogan is Small Enough to Know You But Big Enough to Grow . Top picture is Courtesy of Bernice Butler. The B team had an excellent season, indicating the depth and prospects for next season. Tennis 49 Football Team Demonstrates Character The 1982 gridiron season was difficult to assess. Despite a 4-5 record, the Panthers were extreme- ly competitive. It was a season of bad breaks, wrong bounces and occasionally inclement weather. In spite of adversity, the team remained poised and loyal till the final gun. At the end of the season the Panthers came up six points short to qualify for the regionals. Concordia High did quite well with indiviual hon- ors, placing 11 players. The NCKL All league team for defense included linemen Curt Champlin and line backer Brad Simpson. On offense were split end Terry McCarty, running back Nick Budreau and quarter back John McDaniel. Honorable mention on defense went to line backer Nick Budreau, lineman John LaBarge, end Pete Beau- mont and back Floyd Turner. On offense were tackle David Clintsman, center Tom Richard and tight end Tal Matthes. Homecoming Excitement is . waiting for the week to begin deciding the theme of the class float dressing up in different styles all week voting for the Homecoming Queen watching the parade on Main Street waiting for the judging of floats cheering for the Panthers dressing up for the Homecoming Dance the fun of the entire week pleasant memories for life. - David Barnhart FTomecoming 55 Catching Spirit During Homecoming Forty-Fifth Event Just when the school year became a routine, the special traditional Homecoming week came along. It was a fast-paced week of hard work, excitement, fun and plenty of Pan- ther Spirit. It all began when the stu- dent body nominated five senior girls for Homecoming Queen. After this the competition for the Spirit Stick began in earnest. Tuesday was Fifties Day, Wednesday Western Day, Thursday Preppie Day and Fri- day Red Day. Class members partici- pated by wearing appropriate clothes and hoped it would help the class to win the spirit competition. Homecoming was also hard work. Each class built a float for the parade down Main Street. These class floats entered competition as well as the club floats and decorated cars. The seniors won. All this excitement climaxed Friday afternoon and evening, October 15. The 1982 Homecoming Queen was Dana Skeels. The class of 1983 won the Spirit Stick. Float judging and the downtown parade followed the spe- cial afternoon assembly. The football game score was 17-0 in favor of Be- loit. The whole week concluded with the Homecoming Dance. Coach Dick Switzer expressed satisfac- tion with the girls basketball season. It was a most enjoyable year. The girls worked hard and deserved to be suc- cessful because of the effort they made. The girls enjoyed a 19-6 season, captur- ing third at state, beating NCKL rival Marysville in the finals consolation game at the Salina Bicentennial Center. Earlier the Panthers tied for third in the NCKL with a 8-4 league record. The girls in January took first for the second consecutive year in the Minneapolis In- vitational. Team members did quite well with honors. Denae Stensaas was named to 4-A All-State Teams in the Topeka Ca- pital Journal and the Wichita Eagle- Beacon, the Salina Journal All-Area Team and the Minneapolis Tourna- ment Team. Jody Bramwell also placed on the Minneapolis Team. Coach Erik Rasmussen and the squad used the STEP program this year. The acronym stands for sacrifice, teamwork, effort and poise. In overtime at the Sub-State finals, the Sacred Heart Knights stunned the Panthers 45-43. This defeat for the NCKL champions was a real heart breaker . In evaluating the season Coach Ras- mussen said, This squad is one I will always remember not only because they were the NCKL champions, but also because they were good people. The STEPS to Success program dem- onstrated helped them to be one of the most successful teams at 18-4. In winning the NCKL championship the Panthers were 11-1 in league play. The team placed third in the Salina Invita- tional and second at Sub-State. Terry McCarty, Darren Davenport and Brett Erkenbrack made the NCKL All-League Team. Wrestling Match From Two Viewpoints Mother And Son Both the parents and competitor are often to- tally involved in an athletic event. Here school nurse Nancy Champlin watches anxiously as the clock ticks off the final seconds. Son Curt comes off the mat almost too exhausted to show any emotion but fatigue. We began the year rather slowly, but with hard work and a 'never die' attitude, we came out league champs, regional champs and placed tenth in state. Nick Budreau's state championship at 155 high- lighted the season. Tom Bieker at 145 placed fourth at state. Terry Lambert at 138 won three matches. Curt Champlin in his first year of wres- tling made it to state. The season match record was 7-4. The Panther 5- 1 record in the NCKL qualified for co-champion- ship. The grapplers went on to win first at region- al, fifth at sub-state and tenth at state. In review, the wrestling squad improved signifi- cantly as the season progressed. Using a current slang expression, the wrestlers' competitive spirit went to the max at the season's conclusion. Nick Budreau set the best over-all school record at 77-27-2. Wrestling 67 Warmth Sets The Winter Sports Festival Scene King Curt And Queen Janet The week-long winter thaw melted the big drifts of the Blizzard of 1983. The afternoon pep rally skit on Febr. 18 predicted the outcome of the WSF basket- ball games. The entrapped Panther by means of a clever trick turned the Clay Center Tigers into melt- ed butter for his pancakes. The girls in a close game won 43-36 in overtime. The boys won easily 74-46. The wrestlers at Sub-State at Phillipsburg Saturday placed four individuals into state competition. The student body elected Janet Christian Queen and Curt Champlin King. The juniors, the Class of 1984, won the Spirit Bell. In the spirit competition this class demonstrated leadership on Clash Day Wednesday, Concert T-Shirt Day Thursday and Dress-Up Day Friday. The band Xenolith played at the WSF Dance Friday night in the old gym. MC StuCo president Deby Hull and Sports Club president Alice Demanett conduct- ed the coronation ceremony between the varsity games. All in all, it was a week that gave students a respite from the doldrums of a cloudy, foggy winter. 1983 WINTER SPORTS FESTIVAL Front: Karen Luecke, Tammy Carlgren, Janet Christian, Jenni Nading, Lisa Swihart. Aunt From Brazil Where Nuts Come From Charley's Aunt is set in the 1890's in England. The comedy is about three college boys who are vying for their sweethearts' love. One of the boys dresses as Charley's aunt, a pious fraud , in order to de- ceive the girls into thinking that the young men are chaperoned. Problems arise when one of the young men's father makes a marriage proposal to Charley's aunt. Eventually, matters are resolved. To some de- gree there is a plot parallel to the current movie Tootsie and Dustin Hoffman's portrayal. The snow be- gan Sunday January 30 as resi- dents huddled around their television watching Football Superbowl XVII in which the Washington Redskins beat the Miami Dolphins 27-17. MVP halfback John Riggins, whose family roots trace to James- town, stole the show. 'a .I. Throughout the night eight inches fell. On Tuesday the storm took a dramatic turn for the worse. The prolonged snow produced a 15 inch cover with considerable drifting in the country. USD 333 schools were closed a record three days February 1-3. The winter- weary residents shoveled and moved snow to regain contact with the outer world and to overcome cabin fever. The winter scenes are around school and at the Frank Carlson Library downtown. w Snow 139 1982-83 Concordia Junior-Senior High School Index Adams, Cindy 16, 83, 92 Aldridge, )ason 16, 90, 100 Allen, A Man Of The People Concordia's Senator Frank Carlson served the public for 40 years. His political service, starting in 1929, included six terms in the U.S. House of Re- presentatives, four years as Governor of Kansas and three terms as U.S. Senator from 1951 to 1968. He and his wife Alice have spent their retirement years here. On January 23 he greeted 500 well- wishers on his ninetieth birthday at the city library named in his honor. This more stream-line design structure cost $3,034,000.00 and took more than a year to con- struct. Middle: Renovated Science facilities. Bottom: Locker rooms are remodeled. Again this year Concordia Junior-Senior High made significant improvements. The science rooms enjoyed a major renovation. Athletes could now also enjoy spacious, attractive locker- ooms. Both sets of facilities have a modern clean look. The swimming pool and the basement back hall enjoyed a new facelift. Trucks unloaded needed additional gravel and crushed rock in the parking lot south of the main high school building to give it a solider base. The cafeteria added a fourth lunch menu choice. Many students daily enjoyed this hamburger and French fries choice. The staff continued to help students enter a job market using computer technology. Both junior and senior high computer rooms, having a total of 17 microcomputers, provided students with a dis- tinct advantage. A number of staff members took computer literacy courses in order to be current on trends and developments in the field. All in all, Concordia High again displayed two of its traditional characteristics- PRIDE AND PRO- GRESS.
