It belonged previously to a school teacher who also homesteaded a farm in Nebraska. Top of this page This old photo of the first Washington School at the current location at 237 West Ninth comes from the 1903 X-Ray. the first yearbook. The building prior to the turn of the century was sometimes called the High School even though only one second floor room was used for high school instruction. Middle of this page This is the High School at 135 West Tighth as it appeared in 1903. The west portion of the current Masonic Temple was built in 1900. The eastern portion was added in 1910. This building site was used from 1900 to 1930. 1903 The Merry Milkmaids - an opperetta. 1904 First graduates of four-year high school pro- gram at CHS. 1907 Crimson is the new yearbook name. 1909 CHS wins oldest trophy at Beloit. 1910 CHS Athletic Association is formed. CHS is accredited with Northwestern Associ- ation of High Schools and Colleges (one of four- teen high schools in Kansas). An addition to the east is built onto the high school building. 1913 CHS curriculum includes Domestic Science (Home Ec today). Art and Manual Training (car- pentry). 1914 Manual Training Shop is built north of High School in current parking lot south of downtown Boogaarts. 1915 Hurkaru replaces Crimson as title for yearbook. 1916 Aurora High School begins. 1917 First Annual Football Banquet. Latin and German clubs organized. Hurkaru adopts newspaper format (forerunner of Panther school newspaper). Student Council is organized at CHS. 1918 Spanish Influenza closes CHS from Oct. 9 to Nov. 4. New Washington School is built. 1918-19 Boys and Girls Victory Loan Campaign (WWI) raises $1,200. 1919 New building at high school houses printing shop and drafting room. 1921 The Booster Club organizes. 1922 Nazareth Academy at convent closes and be- comes part of Marymount in Salina. Girls Reserve is formed. 1923 Hi-Y (for boys) begins at CHS. CHS organizes Radio Club. A 22 piece band performs.

Historical Highlights 1866 First school in Cloud County near Ames. 1868 First school term in log cabin in Concordia. 1870 First public school in Concordia known as Dist. 4. 1874 Concordia becomes part of State Normal (teacher training) system. 1876 One-year high school program begins in Con- cordia. 1882 First graduating class of Concordia High. 1885 Classes begin in January at first Washington School located at 237 West Ninth. The building is frequently called the High School although only one room is used for such instruction. Nazareth Academy (boarding school for girls taught by the Sister’s of St. Joseph) opens. 1886 Concordia becomes a second class city in Kan- sas. 1889 CHS adopts Latin Scientific course plan. 1890 Chemistry is first taught. 1892 Literary societies begin at CHS. Founding of Jamestown High School. 1893 Two high school football games: Beloit and Min- neapolis. 1896 Board of Education hires first music teacher. 1900 New High School building at Eighth and Wash- ington (the current western portion of the Ma- sonic Temple) is built at the cost of $12,000. 1903 X-Ray. first known yearbook, is published at CHS. Boys and Girls Basketball is active at CHS. A baseball team also plays. 2

1925 Student Advisory Board (SAB) forms. National Honor Society consisting of top 15 per cent organizes. 1926 Block of land is purchased for current high school site for $9.240. 1927 Cheerleaders purchase white sweaters with emblems. Scarlet fever causes some school absentism. Girls Athletic Association organizes a rifle team. CHS enjoys Circus Day (first Homecoming). 1929 Athletic program adds wrestling. New subjects include General Mechanics and Journalism. Commercial Club is organized by Shorthand II. The girls athletic program offers volleyball and lawn hockey. 1930's School rings and pins are available to stu- dents. Operator Club deals with audio-visual materials. 1936 CHS presents a play which portrays Nazis in- vading a Czechoslovakian village. 1941-45 U.S. involvement in World War II curtails many activities. Numerous alumni serve hon- orably. Some pay the supreme sacrifice. 1943 CHS band plays at POW Camp Concordia. 1944 Notre Dame Catholic High opens at East Sev- enth and Matthew (site of Concordia Business and Normal College 1922-33). 1945 CHS band goes in June to welcome General Dwight D. Eisenhower home in Abilene. 1947 CHS band in January goes to the inauguration of Governor Frank Carlson (alumnus of CHS) in Topeka. He later served as U.S. Senator from 1951 to 1968. The Work Experience Club (forerunner of C.I.T., D.E. and O.E.) organizes. 1949 CHS becomes a participant in the vocational homemaking program. Tin Panthers Den 4 1950 Guidance begins at CHS.
