Middle this page: This page from the 1922 Hurkjru shows the status of education sites in Concordia. Concordia High celebrated its one hundredth graduation with two special projects. The first, a slide sound presentation of the school’s history, was largely researched and developed by Mrs. Patricia Hanson. Eric Erickson and Clark Talley provided the photographic work. The second, a booklet entitled The First Century at Concordia High”, was edited by Henry R. Baxa. Teachers and students of past and present contributed writing to record memories of A CENTURY TO REMEMBER. THEIR GIFT AND OUR RESPONSE The law of Kansas authorized this school-, The voters of Concordia demanded iti The taxpayers of Concordia financed it-. The Superintendent and Board of Education provide for iti The Principal and Faculty conduct it-, But we students are the only ones who can justify it; By our deeds we reward or disgrace these givers. The architects have built the body of this school; It is we who give it a soul. (This poem and photo on opposite page appeared in the 1931 Hurkaru. first yearbook after the dedication of the current high school original building.) 7 A Community With Pride In Quality Education HAIL TO THEE. CONCORDIA (ALMA MATER) Hail to thee. Concordia! Hold your colors high. There’s to you a destiny. Higher than the sky. Red for courage splendid. White for purity. Oh Hail to thee. Concordia. May those colors fly. Hail to thee. Concordia! Loyal we will be. You'll fulfill your destiny. Always you’ll be free. Always strong in battle. Never fearful flee, yes Always dear Concordia. We'll remember thee. (Words and Music by Joe Secrest) (Arrangement by Robert Ensign) Top opposite: This is the current south side of the High School on Eleventh Street. Bottom opposite. Masked Marvels Add Panther Punch The Masked Marvels have made their way to Planet Earth and added some Panther Punch to Concorida High spirit. The Scarlet Avenger who is 561 earth years old has come from Snudl. His colleague Crimson Crusader is 300 years old and from X-5. Some keen observers have speculated the famous twosome resemble Robin Nelson and Jim Cash. An investigative report by Grady Thoman has uncovered this unusual story. Apparently the Scarlet Avenger met the Crim- son Crusader in a far, far away galaxy. A great struggle of epic proportions ensued for many years. After neither could successfully defeat the other, the two decided to live and work on Earth as a team. Since this historic peace agreement, two red caped wonders have visited Concordia High athletic events and demonstrated their famous leaping ability. The antics have created a good Light-hearted spirit. Top: Marching Band at halftime Bottom: Marching Band at Winter athletic event 73 Boys Track Takes Fifth State Championship First Row Bill Vignery. In 1907 the name changed to the Crimson. In 1916 the name Hurkaru was used for both the yearbook and the school newspaper which were combined for some time. Newspaper editions for sever- al years were bound at the end of the school year through the midOOV The newspaper later became known as the Panther, first mentioned as a school mas- cot in the 1930 Hurkaru. The correct pronunciation of the yearbook title is Hur-kar'-u” The word of Indian origin means friendly messanger. A number of past annuals featured American Indian motifs.
