I hate that design. Let's really make the yearbook different this year. When's the first deadline? Mrs. Shull, this picture doesn't fit. Someone lost the varsity football squad. Does this red pencil stuff come out in the wash? 'When's the next deadline? This drawer won't come open and I need to check the subscription list. This is a boring job. May I type instead? Trying to reduce these pictures is driving me nuts! When s the last deadline? I'll need a half a dozen candids right away to finish this page. Oh, my gosh, we forgot to put something on page 124. No, I left the class officer pictures at home. I'll bring them tomorrow — and tomorrow — and tomorrow. 2 We'll never get it done! NBoy, that really looks nice. Lesperance Frederick William Laing Senior Autographs A Fragment From the first day of our freshmen year to the day we graduate may seem to others as only a very short time. It may even seem short to us. But in this time a lot of things have happened. I'Ve have matured quite a bit; made a lot of discoveries, changed our minds many times about the things that are important to us. Often school may seem but a small and unimportant part of this maturity, yet it contributes quite a bit to what we become. It gives us a chance to develop socially, mentally, physically and emotionally. Through this education, we are brought to an exit, a growth period, and an entrance -an exit from the childhood world of recesses, a growth period in knowledge, and an entrance into adulthood. Is it any wonder that we have so many memories of this bittersweet period of our lives. Though our high school years are but a fragment in time, without them neither CHS, its history nor our lives would be complete. 20 A 65° Thermostat setting cooled off the situation. In Time These guys built a house Marsha acted Seniors These gals led the cheers Seniors, our year has come, Bringing with it the last stages of adolescence. We're creeping into the future. Ambitions and goals constantly pushing us forward. We are making our memories as the year goes by. Time is passing day by day. Bring us closer to the moment of going our way. As our last prom has been danced. We'll keep those memories of the fun dates we had. Seniors, crying, sighing, laughing, as graduation nears. This year has become a fragment in history But one we shall never forget. 1980 Angela Aldridge 21 i Dedicated Joel Alderson Michael Allen Toni Allah Annette Aytes Jeff Baker Tye Baker Chris Barajas Becky Bates Wendy Bemis Audrey Bessette Cathy Bieker Rebecca Bisnette Always Troy Anderson Greg Balthazor Brian Berner Greg Bloch linger Anticipation Melanie Bohm Lana Breault Kim Brownell John Cash Steve Boling Jo Dee Brewer Jill Budreau Cary Champlin Linda Bonham Denetta Brichalli Charlene Birch Michelle Charbonneau Cathy Breault Shirley Brown Lisa Burgess caii Christenson 25 Spirit Stick - Again Robert Clintsman Trudy Crogan Colleen Daley Billy Dewitts Judy Collette Danny Crump Cindy Danielson Sandra Dixon Mark Copple Daniel Cummings Cuyetta Davis Connie Dorman Lois Cote Eric Cypher Samuel Deal Brad Douglas 26 Breaking The Mold Eric Erickson Tina Carst Bobbie Jo Hagen Charles Hammon Jenny Fisher Michelle Girard Mark Haist Gayle Hanson Kim Frahm Mary Gladbach Deanna Hake Teri Hanson Lori Frazier Rick Haden Bob Hale Bryan Hardaway 27 Looking To The Future Barbara Haynes Lisa Hopkins Kelly Jager Lee Kalivoda Brad Heald Nancy Horinek Cynthia Jochems Jill Kocher Jacque Henry Scott Houser Russell Johnson Karla Koester Paula Heskett Laura Ihrig Teresa Johnson Lori Krob 28 Expanding Our Horizons Paul LaBarge Johnny Letourneau Diana Lowers Jodi McGinnis Kathy Laing Cindy Loeffler Joanna McCollom Mina McGinnis Donna Lambert Brian Logan Mary McGannon Jeff Meats Kim Lanoue Melissa Lowell Lloyd McGee Julie Metro 29 Inheriting Shaun Miller Brad Modlin Paul Moffet Alan Mosher Brad Nading David Nelson Rob Nixon Cindy Nixon Jeff Nuss Todd Osborne Sue Overstreet Calvin Owen Kevin Peck Emilie Peterson Brad Powell Kevin Ramsey Senior Hall Steve Reedy Paul Reutzel Lois Riley Lori Robbins Barbara Schneider Kurt Schuyler Steven Scott Martin Severance LaBarge Mike Simmons Lisa Slaughter Chuck Smith Bruce Sicard Peggy Snavely Janet Sorell Thaz Sorell Todd Smith 31 Paula Stephenson Mike Tholstrup Becky Torgler Mark Winter Kevin Stewart Terry Tholstrup Danny Trost Mike Wood Susan Stolzenberg Tammy Studt Hiram Thoman Kirsten Timkar Annie Wiesner Lynette Wineinger 32 Peek-a-boo! 33 Being A Sophomore T. First, they organized the magazine sale to support AFS program and to proviae funds for class treasuries. Students who sold magazines received prizes and got to see the movie, Oh God. Adding a new tradition to school life, STUCO organized a new program featuring, The Student of the Month Plan. Each month both members of the faculty and students held a meeting to vote for the person who would receive the honor. As a ne v attraction they purchased a new en- closed bulletin board and refinished the display case in the foyer entrance. STUCO had many more activities carried out through the year. For their ending accomplishment they held their election of next year's representa- tives. THUNDERBIRD MOTEL It's Christmas Time WESTERN POWER Radio Club Brian Christenson. The club had many other activities as well. President Nathan Sorell and Vice-President Mike Tholstrup at- tended the state FFA Convention in Manhattan. Another highlight for the chapter was being ranked high in the Farm Journal magazine sales. Ron Buckland and Jennifer Lewis were the two top salespersons in the chapter. On November 7-9, Mr. Catlin, an adult sponsor and the six officers attended the last two days of the 52 National FFA Convention. The chapter placed 14th out of 26 area chapters at a Leadership Contest held at Cloud County Community College. The A-team Land Judging team placed 14th out of 26 and the B- team placed 10 out of 26. The contest was held at Washington, Kansas. The greenhand initiation was quite a new experience for the nine FFA newcomers. During the initiation the Sweetheart candidates took a written exam. A couple of the questions were How many spark plugs does a diesel engine have? and What type of cow gives chocolatemilk? This co-curricular activity was established nationwide in 1966 as an independent youth organization for students enrolled in office occupations. OEA at Concordia High School was organized in 1972. Miss Sherffius, OE teacher-coordinator, is the chapter advisor. This year, there are seven senior members in the OEA. This is an increase in number over last year but not as many as in years past. For the first time, however, juniors may actively participate in OEA at all levels. There are nine Junior members. Officers are Patty Hower, President: Angela Alaridge, Secretary-Treasurer, and Sheri Rimovsky, Historian. Voting Delegates are Patty Hower, Reimah Reinert, and Diana Lowers. On Saturday, October 27, the members attended the Fall Delegate Assembly in Em- poria, Kansas. The purpose of this confer- ence is to elect the state officers for the Kan- sas Office Education Association for the coming year. Concordia was represented in the campaigning by Patty Hower, for Presi- dent, and Reimah Reinert, a Secretary candi- date. Any club may have only two candi- dates. The local chapter is very fortunate to have had both girls qualify to campaign. Both had to achieve a certain score on an extensive test over OEA and parliamentary procedure to be eligible to campaign. All local OEA membershave been working very hard this past week on campaign materials for the girls, hoping that both will be elect- ed. The following are senior members for the 1979-80 school year. The work stations of the senior members are indicated in paren- theses. Angela Aldridge (Dr. Hood's office), Reimah Reinert (Special Services office), Pat- ty Hower (High School office), Debbie Da- vidson (Vo-Ag Building office), Margaret Womack (Media Center office), Sheri Ri- movsky (Tom s Music House), Sue Fredricks (Coast to Coast). i u n GREEN LIGHT AUTO PARTS KEN'S TV 59 Top Row: President, Mike Haist, Vice President, Lisa Rossiter, Treasurer, Jon Tracy, Bottom Row: Secre- tary, Charlene Davis, Re- porter, Ruth Sallman, Par- liamentarian, Richard Lew- is CULBERTSON S ELECTRIC DR. There they mixed recreation with spirit sessions, and learned new ways to obtain member- ships, conduct money-making projects and gathered new ideas in general. On October 10, the sponsor, Mrs. Hotaling, and ten Kayettes attended the Regional Kayette Conference at Belleville and received the three thousand point award for their 1978-1979 achievements. October 31 saw them enjoying a Halloween party at the Parish Hall of the Spiscopal Church, where they were awarded prizes for best costumes. In November the girls sold candy bars, and at Thanksgiving time prepared baskets of traditional holiday goodies for two area families. The next activity of the year was a trip to Scandia on March 3rd where 16 Kayettes and their sponsor at- tended an area conference. Next year the Concordia group will host this conference on March 17, 1981. The year will close with the annual Mother-Daugh- ter Tea and Style Show in May where the girls will model the latest fashions and their mothers will be the guests of honor. 62 CROUCH'S AUTO SALVAGE The Kayettes are busy putting together some Thanksgiving baskets HUBER'S BARBER SHOP Forensics First Row- T. Band 79 70 Band Activities 79-80 The Concordia High School Band began the year in style by attending KU Band Day Activities in Lawrence, Kansas, September 29, 1979. They marched in a downtown parade in the morning and were guests of the University at the KU- North Texas State Game. All of the bands took part in a musical half time show. During the year the band sold candy bars and baskets of fruit to raise money for a trip to Worlds of Fun a Kansas City on May 10 and 11. There they enjoyed the enter- tainment of the park, as well as participating in a contest with ap- proximately thirty other schools. At the State Music Festival held at Concordia on April 25 and 26 band members received I ratings on both sight reading and perfor- mance. For weeks class members had been spending their evenings constructing a float, ,Panthers Train To Win, which they hoped would win. All their work paid off. Before the parade started at 3:15, their float won the coveted blue ribbon. They also had a right to be proud when out of the entire senior class Lisa Courville was chosen, by the student body, to be Homecoming Queen. She and her court led the parade through the business district to open festivities which lasted the rest of the day. The juniors showed their enthusiasm for the occasion by winning first in the Spirit Stick competition. That night the Panthers took on the Clay Center Tigers. Concordia suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands (paws ?) of the Tigers by a 14-28 loss. To finish the fun-filled day and lift the Panthers' spirits, Polite Force played for the homecoming dance held in the gymnasi- um. After weeks of preparation and hours of festivities, the great day ended on a high note. With Tigers 8th Grade Football 1st Row- B. Lanoue, M. Hubert, D. Hinman, J. Bergeson, T. Carlson, F. Boutz, K. Why was she getting in by the emergency door? Because earlier Becky Torgler had sprained an ankle and was lying down in the front. Before this Regina Smith, playing another of her strenuous games, pulled a chest muscle. Together these girls learned the thrill of victory and the a-a-a-a-gony of defeat. However, they ended the season with a 7-8 varsity record, 10-5 JV, and Frosh 5-0. Play it again, Jill. Up and over! CROUCH AUTO SALVAGE HUBER BARBER SHOP 87 Cross Country Team Back Row: P. Osborn You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown As the lights dimmed and the pit orchestra began to play, the CHS musical, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown was under way. Opening night for the produc- tion was Nov. 15. It was also presented on Nov. 16 and 17. Direction was by Mr. Church, Mr. Miles and Mr. Huddleston. The musical focuses on numerous episodes in the lives of Charlie Brown and his friends. Different from most, it does not center on plot. Instead, it moves with unrelated humorous incidents which reveal the per- sonalities of the characters. Brad Powell portrayed Charlie Brown, the main star of the play. Charlie is worried that he is inferior to the rest of the gang because he never seems to do anything right. He tries in vain to fly a kite successfully, and gets discouraged when he learns that peanut butter sandwich eaters are lonely. The somewhat crabby Lucy was played to JoDee Brewer. Lucy's personality is amusing because she is never afraid to express her opinion, as well as give advice to others. Snoopy, the lovable canine star, was played by Gary Shrader. Mark Rothfuss portrayed Schroeder, who is oblovious to the fact that Lucy is madly in love with him. He is more concerned with his beloved piano and would rather think only of Beethoven. Kevin Johnson and Colleen Daley played Linus, Lucy's baby brother, and Patty respectively. The pit orchestra did an extremely nice job in the production. Lori Krob, the pianist, provided most of the accompaniment, and Lynette Johnson, Terri Gil- bert, Harvey Hammon and Diane Severance rounded out the group of musicians. 90 Varsity Basketball 1st Row; Coach Meyer, K. Midway through the dance X-mas Ball Royalty was cho- sen. Junior Julie Metro was an- nounced as Queen and Senior Paul Cladbach was chosen King. They played songs from artists such as Head East, Foreigner, Billy Joel, AC- DC, and Bob Seger. As the couples entered the old gym, they wenf through a grass hut with beads for the door into the jungle . The tables were decorated with green paper and there was a totem pole in the middle of the multi-purpose room with green streamers at- tached to it. In the hallway be- tween the gym and the multi- purpose room, there were par- rots with the couples' name on them. Banana punch and white cake was served. 112 May 3, 1980 113 Commencement 114 May 21, 1980 Valedictorian Kelly Peck The long-awaited moment 115 Honor Students TOP 15%: Tara Garrison, Rebecca Steward, Cindy Trost, Lori Duewell, Carole Brummer, Reed Hinkel, Eric Christensen, Kelly Peck 116 Senior members of A Cappella Choir sing their grand finale Rising Above Everyday Life Valedictorian Salutatorian Kelly Peck Carol Brammer Beginning in October of this year Concordia High School started recog- nizing one outstanding student per month.
