The Kansas Association for Youth (Kayettes) is an organization for high school students that serves their school, their community, the nation and the world. ' 'Kayettes is one of the most worthwhile clubs here at CHS,1' says Senior Jenny Koehn, ' 'every year it seems to accomplish more and more.'' Kayettes' projects this year include such things as a ' 'Teacher Baby-Face Contest,'' cleaning out trophy cases, and crowning a Mr. Irresistible on Hush Button Day. Comments Junior VaLynda Buckland, 1 think this year's school projects have been very well re- ceived by the student body.'' Community services played an important part in Kayettes this year. They started off in Thanksgiving by giving food baskets to needy families. They continued in December by singing Christmas carols at Mt. Joseph Rest Home. On April 9, they adopted grandparents for the rest of the school year at the home. Says Senior Becky Bonham of the community projects committee, ' 'Kayettes strives to bring a little cheer to the elderly and tiie unfortunate of Concordia.'' In December Kayettes adopted a little girl from the Philippines. Each month she receives $15 a month to- wards her support. This adoption lasts until July. Kayettes made flowers for Valentines Day. Commenting on the club says the sponsor, Mis. Ho- taling, It has been my privilege for the past ten years to sponsor the Kayette club. I am very proud of 'my girls'. These are some of the finest young women attending Concordia High School and I know they will be the leaders of tomorrow. Our slogan is 'Laugh, Love, Lift' and this is exactly what these girls do. 54 Winter Wishes Tammy Watts, Janet Sorell, Susan Horkman; Standing, David Vignery, Queen Julie Jager, King Ricardo de Luz, Gary Champlin, Tom Anderson Queen Julie and King Ricardo Guests at the 1978-79 Christmas ball were dazzled by the sounds of 1 'Limousine as Ricardo de Luz and Julie Jager were announced to be King and Queen. The gym was decorated in the theme of Winter Wishes. Couples entered over a snowy bridge with small decorated trees on either side. A mural decorating one wall showed comic characters skat- ing on the ice, and icicles hung above the dancing couples. In the multipurpose room where Christmas cookies and punch were served to C.H.S. students and their guests, tables resembled Christmas packages wrapped in blue and silver paper. 55 Journalism I L. What is VICA? VICA is the Vocational Initia- tive And Club Achievement Program. It was de- signed to provide a means of recognition for a student's performance. Each year the VICA class enters the Skill Olympics. For the 1978-79 year, nine people represented Concordia High School VICA club. This year, on April 5 and 6, the Olympics were held at the Salina Area Vo-Tech School. Con- testants came from all parts of the state. Kip Budreau entered the carpentry contest; Dan Torgler entered the welding contest; Mark New- lin competed in the small engine repair. Tony Anderson, Eric Huber, Denny Davidson, Lori Cote, Jeff Smith and Rick Laing also com- peted in their job areas in what is called a Skills Demonstration. This Demonstration gives each person a chance to demonstrate skill, knowledge and personal accomplishment. The presentations are judged on quality and contest. They are then ranked to receive gold, silver, and bronze me- dallions for 1,2, and 3 place. VICA lets the students see how the world of work really runs. 58 METRO AUTO REPAIR WHITES SOFT WATER SERVICE DECA The Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) at CHS offers a program designed to allow seniors time to familarize themselves with life after gradu- ation. Students go to school in the morning, and in the afternoon they work in various local businesses such Gibsons, Tom's Music House, and Dairy Queen. Says Senior Mike Charbonneau, 1 'DECA taught me to get along with all types of people. It shows a student financial planning, food budgeting, and many other things a graduating senior will need to know. During the 1978-79 school year the DECA class invited people from the business world to come to CHS and discuss their jobs. They listened to such speakers as a real estate broker, a law- yer, and a home economist. March 4,5,06, the DECA class traveled to Wichita for the state competition. Senior Julie Jaster returned to Concordia with a third place trophy for food ser- vice master employee. The whole class won the first place trophy in the goofiest hat competition. Julie Jaster, Craig Boucher, Mike Charbonneau, Janet Cleaviand, Tom Rog- ers, Annete Ryser, Shari Scott, Cindy Shanks, Jay Strait, Maury Tracy, Carl Wilis, and Mary Workman all recommend DECA to other students. ' 'DECA is for anyone who wants to get more job-oriented,'' comments DECA Vice-President Maury Tracy,'' and likes to learn with others in his class. 1 think it has helped me and will help anyone willing enough.'' Although there were only four members in the club, they took on as many projects as if there had been many more members. This proved to be an extra responsibility for the girls, but all gained valuable experience. At the spring Leadership Conference held at Emporia in March, two of the girls qualified for Nationals: but neither attended the con- ference which was in Cincinnati. Sharon Le- Duc received sixth place in Machine Tran- scription , fifth place in Accounting 1, and first place in the Accounting I Cluster Con- test. ' 'May the Force Be with You'' was the theme for this year's Homecoming. Some activities were Hat Day where everyone wore a hat to school, ' 'Button Day'' with everyone covered with but- tons supporting the team and ending with ' 'Red Day'' where everyone wore as much red as pos- sible . Each class also did different activities to help boost the spirit. The halls were filled with posters as each class decorated a portion of the school. It in- cluded a Dress Up Day (Feb. 21), a Class Day (Feb. 22), and a Red Day (Feb. 23). Students also chose a king and queen of winter sports. They voted from a list of seniors in their homerooms. All Seniors were eligible with the exception of Homecoming Queen candidates and the Christmas Ball royalty. On Saturday night, Feb. 23, Stuco Vice-President, Doug Walden announced the chosen royalty and the Seniors as the winners of the class competition in the Jr. High gym. The program lasted during the half-time between the B and A basketball games. Julie Johnson was crowned queen and Maury Tracy was crowned king. 1 '1 was very excited,'' said Julie, 1 'and flattered to be chosen queen of the Winter Sports Festival. The couple's attendants were: Lisa Brichalli, Terri Myers, Jo McConnell, Shari Esau; Ken Meyer, Bob Runge, Ron Johnson, and Jim Meats. After the games Stuco held a dance in the old gym. Entertainment was provided by the rock group, Coyote. Funding for the dance came from the percentage Stuco receives from the pop machine and the juke box in the mu- litpurpose room. ' 'The Winter Sports Festival continues to be a tradition which students still find meaningful,'' commented Stuco Advisor, Henry Baxa. 79 Varsity Wrestlers First Row: M. Tholstrup, S. Crump, J. The band played all kinds of music ranging from rock to square dancing mu- sic . The couples danced from 8 to 12 and then had refreshments in the multipurpose room. The Prom given to the seniors from the Juniors was decorated with the theme of ' 'Oceans Of Thoughts and Dreams.'' A group of sophomores served the punch and cake to the guests. When some of the students were asked what they had thought of the prom, most of them thought it was the best one they had ever gone to. A lot of the kids commented that the best part of the prom was the square dance. One student even stated it made it more ex- citing and different from all the rest. Mark G Betty Joe B. G Jodee A. But, when our farmers can no longer produce our low-cost food, or when they have no economic incentive or ability to produce this food — truly, again, “the grass will grow in the streets of every city in the country. ” § 125 THE CLOUD COUNTY COOPERATIVE ELEVA TOR ASSOCIATION, INC.
