The Publications class of 1978 would sincerely like to thank Mis. Shull for all the help and guidance she gave us in publishing the yearbook. We'll even forgive her for knocking our heads together trying to meet the deadlines. The yearbook would not be possible if it were not for people like Mis. Shull, who help us organize all the hap- penings of the year and compile them into one great mass. Thank you again Mis. Shull. The 1978 Publications Class We would also like to thank Mr. Talley's Journalism 1 and II classes who gave us lots of pictures to use in the yearbook. Her attendants were Den- ise Fleming, Denise Carver, Nan- cy Olson, and Julie Shepherd. The senior class of '78 won the Spirit Stick and the sophomore class was the wanner in the float competi- tion with the slogan, Roll 'em Over. The class spirit was not enough, as the Panthers lost the football game to the Clay Center Tigers, 24-7. Following the game, a dance took place, which wall always be remembered. The scheduled band, Wonder- wheel, was forced to cancel be- cause of mechanical trouble. With the help of two KNCK disc jock- eys, Joe Jindra and Mike Farmer who emceed the records, the dance proved to be a real success Queen Beth. A lot of hard work and dedication by a number of young athletes helped them to reach out and run faster than ever they thought they could run. Many hours of training by these individuals during the torrid heat of the summer months made these times possible. Your team will go down as the greatest Cross Country Team ever assembled at Concordia High School. With the returning of few letterwomen, the C.H.S. girl's track team depended greatly on inexperienced but talented freshmen and a handful of returning let- terwomen. The leadership provided by several indi- viduals enabled the team to hold a respectable position in league standing and regional competition. The goal of the team was the improvement of person- al , individual performance. The season began with the State Indoor at Kansas University, seeing Jenny Koehn place second in the high jump with a leap of 5'5'1. As the season progressed, the freshmen gained valuable experience in several key meets. The eight freshmen girls placed a solid third in the first freshmen girls league meet. The leadership of Julie Vignery, Jeanne Gladbach, and Marj Fogle contributed a great deal to many successes. Four girls qualified for the State Meet held at Augusta, May 19, 20. Susan Horkman, Jo McCollom, Jenny Koehn, and Julie Vignery combined in the regional for a school record breaking performance in the Mile Re- lay of 4:10.6, in which they were third and qualifying for State Competition. Julie Vignery and Jenny Koehn also qualified for State in their individual events. Jeanne Gladbach Next year's season holds much promise and anticipa- tion of a good season. BANNER 5 10 CRUM IMPLEMENT CO. 69 THE MUSIC MAN In the spring of 1978, the combined efforts of the music and drama departments were harnessed to produce the first Broadway musical in the history of Concordia High, Meredith Wilson's delightful com- edy about turn-of-the-century Iowans, The Mu- sic Man.1' Initial rehearsals for actors took place during spring vacation. At the same time songs were learned, intricate dances were rehearsed, and a pit orchestra under the direction of Mr. Miles practiced the extremely difficult music. Finally, only two weeks before opening night, actors and musicians began practicing together, carefully synchronizing the music with the dance and vocal numbers. On May 11, after almost 200 rehearsal hours in- volving more than 80 CHS students, the curtain rose on the most ambitious stage production in CHS his- tory . The reaction of the Concordia community was astounding. Both performances played to near ca- pacity performances, with many first-nighters re- turning for the final performance. Concordians were amazed at the professional quality of the perfor- mance. The Music Man cast brought a great deal of pride and spirit to the school community. 70 STUCO First Row: Janelle Collette, Nancy Harris, Shelly Christensen, Maria Belvill, Leslie Wilson, Marcia Peter- son, Beth Morrison, Joanna McCollom, Denise Gillian. The Student Council was busy this last year with the school's magazine sales campaign, which sold $10,500 worth of subscriptions for the A.F.S. program; the regional Stuco conference at Beloit and the once-a-semester Stuco officers-administrators breakfast at the Skyliner Steak House. This last activity allowed them to discuss some of the scholastic problems at C.H.S. Mr. Baxa, Stuco advisor, reports that the event was extremely successful. Suco life wasn't all fun because they also had the routine meetings and business to handle, along with the flowers to order for Queens and Kings, dances to arrange and clean-ups to follow. The 27 member organization has done a great job of leading the students of CHS to a successful year. Tom Nixon, vice - pres.; Sandy St. Pierre .treasurer; Janine Colby, Secretary; Dan Whitney, Pres. FOREIGN LANGUAGE HIGHLIGHTS The highlights of the year for the French club began in September with a picnic on the Nature Trail at CCCC. In December the group sang French Christmas carols for St. Mary's, St. Ann's and several private homes of elderly French speaking persons in the com- munity. The club celebrated Mardi Gras with a crepe party, and they competed in the annual French Contest at Wichita State University. Eleven people observed and four competed out of the club. The year ended with the French and Spanish Clubs' Banquet, featuring crepes, coque au vin, tacos and quacamole over com chips. Most of the Spanish Club's programs this year have centered around our AFS student from Chile, Muguel Zamara-Paz. We've eaten empanadas, watched Ra- fael, a famous Spanish singer, and seen slides of Chile. We partied at the Boardman's with exchange students from Uruguay, Mexico and Columbia. Mrs. Marian Cook, told of her trip to the San Bias Islands and showed Molas , beautiful pieces of appliqued fabric. The advanced Spanish class raised enough money to take a 17 day trip to Mexico City, Vera Cruz, Aca- pulco, Guanajuato and Taxco. The Kayettes have been hard at work this year in an attempt to reach many goals. Their hope is to achieve the 2000 point award this year, and the 3000 next. Their projects include the adoption of a ten-year-old Navajo child in Monument, Utah, to whom they send a monthly allowance. At the beginning of the year they held a tea for the faculty. Later they adopted three needy families and took them Thanksgiving baskets. In December they went caroling at the local rest homes, and fixed Christmas cookies for the school cooks and custodians. In January the organization hosted the District Kayette Conference, with four schools in attendance. They presented a talent show to raise money for the adopted Navajo child and closed the year with a style show and installation tea, with their mothers as guests. All in all, there is more to Kayettes than just a homeroom activity. Its members become involved with the world. Kim Johnson sings The lord's Prayer at tin Kayette Conference. SLOW DANCING Couples Boogie An unusual guest book 1 'YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE'' was the theme for the 1978 Junior-Senior Prom. Couples danced to the vibra - tions of ' 'Roxtar'1. The gym was decorated to resemble a starry night in the city. A crepe paper hallway ending in a shimmer- ing curtain led to the gym. In one comer a stairway led to the stars. At it's top was a big star with the words Junior-Senior Prom 1978 . Stars containing couples names decorated the hallway to the multi- purpose room.
