Sound exciting? That's just what it was the week of October 5, 1974. During this week we crowned Queen Kim, built a float, and boosted our team on for a victory. We had a parade, put up posters, and celebrated Hat Day, leading up to the age-old tradition of the Spirit Stick. Over- all, it was an exciting time of the year, with the finale—the game. Wanting to do something different, the StuCo officers, Randy Lagasse, Fred Foster, Sarah McCollom and Peggy Bieker, decided that this year StuCo representatives would be chosen from students who volunteered for these posi- tions. Each homeroom then voted for the final election. It was a successful endeavor. Along with this, the Student Council sponsored the Football Homecoming and Valen- tine's Day Dance. As usual the StuCo took care of the students wants. Fixing the pop machine and the juke box seemed to be the most demanding. Along with the above, StuCo worked for a better parking lot and improvements in homeroom, with the idea of intramurals. CHS students also were in- troduced to The Panther Fan-tom who stalked the halls in search of school spirit. Over-all the year was very successful. Pres. R. Lagasse; V.P. F. Foster; Treas. P. The school year 73-74 saw some far-reaching changes in the senior high language arts department One of these was the development of a new course called PUBLICATIONS, devoted entirely to year- book production. Sixteen members of the 11th and 12th grades are currently enrolled. These students have learned from first-hand ex- perience that a multitude of talents is necessary to publish the record of any given year. Among other things, they have been involved in selling adverti- sing, scheduling pictures, operating concession stands, designing lay-outs, writing copy, meeting deadlines, and checking, checking, and double checking. A new feature of this year's book is the expan- ded coverage of the junior high. This has been ac- complished with the co-operation of Mrs. Barber's 7th hour class in 8th grade English, under the super- vision of Hurkaru's Junior High Editor, Jacque Passmore. Two field trips which highlighted the year were the American Yearbook Workshop at C.C.C.C. and the publications tour to Topeka in the spring. CHAPUT FUNERAL HOME CONCORDIA. The paper contains the latest news stories concerning the student body. Twenty-one members of Journalism I and three members of Journalism II produce all of their own photo- graphs. Journalism II is responsible for planning each issue and assigning stories to Journalism I students. The basic elements of reporting and working at various jobs of newspaper production are experienced. Many hours of work and effort go into the publication of the Panther, and the stu- dent body should appreciate this fact. L. J. JOLER AGENCY REAL ESTATE AND INSURANCE CONCORDIA. GAMBLE HARDWARE — FURNITURE APPLIANCE STORE DOG ’N SUDS 17 Arts and Crafts Art is important in high school education in that it can help a stu- dent begin to see new things in his surroundings and to approach life in a more creative manner. At C.H.S., this creativity is developed under Dennis Thompson and Dennis Southwick who teach a total of 10 classes in Art and in Crafts. A reels covered include leather crafts, pottery, painting, drawing, and work with metals and clay. For the first time, this year Art and Crafts were extended to the Eighth grade. It is hoped by the department that in the 74-75 school term, these offerings will be avail- able to students in grade 7. This will afford a more comprehensive program throughout junior and sen- ior high. 18 BOB’S IGA INC. ELKS’CLUB Audio-Visual Club A -lst ROW: LEFT TO RIGHT: S. Nicholson, R. Gagnon. 2nd ROW: G. It provides music for the sporting events and pep assemblies but more importantly, for the purpose of stimulating the athletes and the fans. The members of it are the best of the band. The music they play is selected from a large category, so there should be a bit for everyone. We hope you found the kind you liked. Pep Band-Doin' it. FRONT ROW; L. TO R. J. Darby, L. Pettygrove, J. Let's go over that scene one more time. Two minutes! Break a leg! - ETC ANONYMOUS was the name chosen for the members of this year's drama class. This symbolizes doing everything and anything (etc.) and losing one's identity to take on many others (anonymous). Since Concordia High School just revitalized dra- ma this year, much needed to be done. Much time was spent in learning and putting into practice the many theatrical techniques. The class learned acting principles, stagecraft methods, and ended the year by directing individual one-act plays. Many weeks were filled with organizing and cata- loging the combination costume-prop-dressing room. Thanks to many members to the community, CHS now has hundreds of possible costumes and many props. After going to a theatre workshop at K-State this fall, an evening of three one-act plays was presented on December 10: THE ACTS OF THREE BY ONE. And now that was all back then . For the theatre freaks, 1973-74, went too quickly. But then, there's always next year. Perhaps CHS will be filled with the smell of greasepaint and the whispered cry of Cur- tain, please once again. 46 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY HAROLD C LARK--Superintendent PAUL KOEHN--Assistant Superintendent The school year of 1973-74 has been a very eventful year in the lives of all C.H.S. students. Many improvements have taken place in curriculum and building facilities. One very important addi- tion had been the con- struction of the new li- brary media center. This area is one of the most complete facilities in our State and provides students and faculty unlimited op- portunities for study and research. The new food service area and program compares very favorably with such service any place in Kansas. I wish to con- gratulate C.H.S. students for their cooperation and patience during the con- struction period of these facilities. Congratulations for having a good school year and best wishes in the future. 48 SECRETARIES L TO R: Karen Swenson, Martha Fyfe, Dorothy Green. A.A. CAR RIE R— Pri nc i pa I LARRY M. NELSON—Assistant-Principal Mr. Andrew Carrier, principal of Concordia High School and Mr. James P. Post, principal of Concordia Junior High, lead busy lives as administrators. They have the task of pulling things together when, bit by bit, they seem to be falling apart. As principals, they must be responsible for enforcing the operational po- licies of the board of education. They play a big part in planning and adopting courses to meet student needs and interests. Other duties include overseeing atten- dance, conduct, and health. In addition, they must ap- prove the ordering of supplies, textbooks, and equip- ment necessary for the operation of the school. The authority to excuse students before the regular dismis- sal time rests in the hands of these two men. They are also responsible for the safety and conduct of all stu- dents riding the bus. Assisting the principal is Mr. Larry M. Nelson. Be- sides helping Mr. Carrier, he has responsibilities of his own. He supervises student conduct, including atten- dance, suspension, and expulsion. As head of student activities, his duties include establishing a calendar of events, arranging transportation for school activities, and planning student assemblies. He develops teacher and student handbooks and helps to determine school rules and policies. These three men deal with extraordinary amounts of detail and vast numbers of people, with few minutes to themselves. All in all, when something is needed, they must be there. JAMES P. Gets New Addition Between 600 and 700 people attended the long-awaited open house of the new Concordia Junior-Senior High School library-media center and food service facility on Dec. 16, 1973. The 10,301 sq. ft. library media center is one of the latest design and perhaps is the most functional one in Kansas today. It has seating capacity for 200 to 250 students and contains several smaller rooms designed for class- room work. In addition, there are a number of carrels provided for students to use different types of audio-visual aids on a variety of subjects. The food service, storage, and mechanical areas on the lower lever cover 11,554 sq. ft. The most modern kit- chen equipment was purchased for this facility. The 6,693 sq. ft. kitchen area is equipped to prepare hot meals in a choice of three menus each day for all Concordia public schools. Special warming containers can be wheeled into a van and used to transport the food to the Middle School and other elementary buildings. Both of these facilities are greatly appreciated and well-used. Heads bent Intently over books, crepe paper hung at a Homecoming dance, or friends gathered round in the morning for talk? When I look back, what will I hear? A locker door slammed shut in haste, the pounding of feet as the last bell rings, or whispered laughter during class? A prism of activities color the pages of a book tucked away within my mind of hours in study, hours in laughter. Will the first time that I danced very slow pass through my mind in later years as I sit alone? When I am old what will I remember of all the years spent in these halls? One thing is certain. I will recall the different laughter of friends I've made in these hurried years. We were very slow in getting started, but gained momentum as the sea- son progressed. The climax came with the winning of the Marysville tournament. In the Championship game we de- feated a good Marysville team on their home court. Our big problem for part of the season was lack of team effort. We had some good individual effort, but couldn't mold it into team effort. Our objective was accomplished by win- ning the tournament. As a coach it was very satisfying to see this group of boys mature in the sense of becoming more disciplined to team play. It was also satisfying to sec the different boys mature as better basketball players and, most important, as individuals. Coach Bigham Freshman Tourney Team; BACK ROW: Coach Bigham, S. Roberts, M. The largest band in USD 333 was the Junior Hi band of 101 members, under the direction of Mr. Lonnie Miner. These musicians marched for the Marysville football, game at Jamestown for their Homecoming, for a CCCC soccer game, and in CHS's Homecoming, parade. They were pre- sented in public performance Feb. 12 and received a I at the Jr. Hi Music Contest March 16th. They also played at all 8th grade football games and gave winter concerts at the Ele- mentary Schools. Four members of the bands: Richard Brady, Kevin Camp- bell, Kurt Kocher, and Gary Nelson participated in the Youth for Music band at CCCC Feb 17. Pep band played for all Jr. Hi home basketball games and the wrestling tournament, and the year was ended with the All Schools Day Parade in Mc- Pherson May 10th. 109 Look Out, Here We Come Marching, cooking. studying (a little) playing ball. and even writing poetry if we have to. I'd Like to See I'd like to see a strong wind die; I'd like to see a great wave cease; I'd like to see a dark cloud brighten; But most of all I'd like to see all wars stopped. James Floe 110 Everybody Always Says, These Are the Best Days of Your Lives.” Flunking a test, bending your lunch ticket, having a fire drill during phys. ed., your best friend moves away, losing a 10 page term paper, getting caught without a pass, having an incurable crush, wiping out on a cinder track, having a flat tire on a back road late at night, breaking out again, getting a ticket, having lasagna, missing the bus, finding peanut butter in the apple sauce. OF COURSE, there is Waterbombs, homecoming, wild parties, laughing until it hurts, all the pizza you can eat, sneaking somebody in the drive-in, getting a free game out of the pin-ball machine, riding around, throwing a coach in Blosser's Pond, lettering AFTER all, lifelong friends, unforgettable, and unMENTIONAB LE experiences. I Maybe They’re Right MATTHEW GREENHOUSE BELL’S REPAIR SERVICE CLEASON BELL 1908 S. LINCOLN Yesterday Everyone enjoys sipping a soda at the Malt Shop. Susann and Steve 112 Yesterday Once More, the theme for this year's prom, was held May 4 from 9 to 12 p.m. Glass Apple ' a brass band from Topeka, was featured. They played songs by Chicago, Blood Sweat and Tears and Deep Purple. The gym was covered with purple, pink, and blue streamers. The walls were decorated with dark blue pa- per and dancing silhouettes. Pink and purple flowers were arranged in between the figures. In the middle of the gym there was a malt shop scene. It consisted of a little table with two chairs. An old fashioned juke box sat to one side with a mirror ball hanging above the whole scene. The ball rotated and cast circles of light on to the dance floor. The hall and multi-purpose room were transferred into a town. Along one wall there was Al's Barber Shop and Peg's Dress Shop with plenty of parking along the other wall. At the end of town stood the Malt Shop. In- side you were met by tables covered with red gingham table clothes and candles in the middle. Cheery cafe curtains in red hearts hung in the windows. Red and white crepe paper hung from the ceiling and one wall. During the intermissions the guests were served chocolate or strawberry sodas and cake.—CHS Panther Stuart and Deanna Once More 113 Baccalaureate Valedictorians: Connie Bonebrake, Greg Hamel, Julie Chubbuck. After the invocation by Reverend Robert Fleenor, the Senior Vocal Ensemble sang two numbers. They sang Choose Something Like a Star by Randall Thompson and Hail To Thee Concordia by Joseph Secrets. After being introduced by Andrew A. Carrier, the tri-valedictorians, Connie Bonebrake, Julie Chubbuck, and Greg Hamel, gave the commencement ad- dresses. Dr. Hattan, president of the Board of Education, with the help of Mr. Clark our superintendent presented the diplomas. It was a time of happiness for some since they were finally out of high school, but for others it was a time of sadness since they would never again walk the halls of Concordia High School. However, for all it was a time for thankfullness for all the help they received from others over the years. 115 Cooks L TO R: Mrs. Moon, Mrs. Demanette, Mrs. Yamal I, Mrs. Pounds, Mrs. Bonebrake, Mrs. Feasel, Mrs. Barker Mrs. Payton, Mrs. Lambert, Mrs. Carter.
