Winter Sports Festival The 1972-73 Winter Sports Festival celebration began Thursday, January 18 with spirit competition between the classes. Friday afternoon everyone showed much spirit at a pep assembly in the new gym. That night, between the A and B games, the Class of 1975 won the Spirit Jug. Then Rachele Hamilton and Richard Lesperance were named as the Winter Sports royalty. The night was topped by the Panthers beating the Wa- mego Red Raiders 58-47. This victory gave Concordia the possession of the traveling trophy. The Winter Sports Festival concluded with a dance, held on Saturday night, instead of after the game on Friday. Panther Trackmen Almost Capture State 1972-73 Record Points 3rd in State 22 1st in Regional 54 1st in NCKL 119 1st in Lyons Relays 59 1st in Abilene Relays 114 1st in Marysville Relays 109 1st in Concordia Relays 58 1st in Clay Center Relays 88 1 2 2nd in Chapman Relays 71 The 1973 Panther Track and Field squad completed one of the most suc- cessful seasons in school history. Coach Bob Baumann's talent-laden squad has to be one of the most powerful teams ever assembled at CHS. Gifted with a fine stable of sprinters led by Larry Walton, Bill Carlow, Fred Foster, Alan Souchek, and Norman Clark, the Panthers dominated the Sprint events throughout the season. The distance runners led by John Horkman, Doug Mon- toya, Mike Montoya, Mike McMenomey, Bryan Deal, and Mike O'Connor Dominated the 880, mile, two mile, and two-mile relay during the entire relay circuit. Tremendous improvement in the field events culminated with Larry Walton's 195 feet 10 1 2 inch javelin throw which placed him first in the state championships and established a new school record for this event Still another outstanding performance was turned in by Mark Breault, junior pole vaulter, who vaulted 13 feet 4 inches and placed third in state compe- tition. A large part of the improvement of the field events can be directly traced to the outstanding job by coaches Larry Nelson and Jim Coppoc, who spent many long hours instructing these two young men. -Coach Baumann.
