Rollo Way. A man who lives intensely really lives, but a man who lives to be one hundred and twenty doesn't necessarily live at all. e. e. cummings “All That Reflective Memory Stores, Or Rich Imagination Pours; Our memories of student life in 1972-73 begin with both the fresh, new challenge of gathering for school each morning and the feeling of return, in the singing of the school song at the opening assembly. Memories of football, homecoming and the long-awaited arrival of the rings rapidly pile up, making the fall pass almost as fast as a morning passes to the noon hour. 3 “All That To Heaven And Earth Relates” We remember the hard work that resulted from school pride and led to the satisfaction of successes in every- thing from basketball to citizenship. Two long-standing traditions--prom and a foreign exchange student were tremendous successes this year. And, almost before we know it, school is out! 4 All That Man Loves, Or Fears, Or Hates Characteristic of the ac- tivities of the '72-'73 school year were the intense emo- tions of the participants. The pendulum swung from the high pitched school pride and class rivalry of Home- coming to the relaxed en- joyment of assemblies and FTA and Kayette parties. We remember fear--or is it only the appreciation of a new hair style—and the satisfaction of teamwork in serving a ball, doing a pom- pom routine, wiping up the 220, or blending 64 throats into one voice. 5 “All That The Wit Of Man Conceives All That He Wishes, Hopes, Believes.” Hard Work Pays Off In Scholarships For These Seniors Among the senior scholarship winners were FRONT ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: D. This season we tied for second in the N. C. K. L. In every game we played well and had a chance to win. Most disappointing were the losses to Wamego (0-6) and to Beloit (21-26). The team worked hard each week and showed great desire to win each Friday. As a coach, this is the most you can ask of a high school boy. It was also a great privilege to work with the fine group of seniors. They gave the whole team tremendous leadership. Their great desire to win, it is hoped, will be carried over into next year's squad. Coach Hartshorn. Their hustle, defense, and never- say-die spirit carried them to a 16-6 season record, second place in the N. C. K. L. , second place in the regional tournament, and first place in the Concordia Invitational Tournament. They were rated in the top ten of the state in both the WICHITA EAGLE and TO- PEKA DAILY over the last ten weeks of the season, finishing fourth in the Wichita paper for the highest finish of any Concordia team in history. Friday afternoon everyone showed much spirit at a pep assembly in the new gym. That night, between the A and B games, the Class of 1975 won the Spirit Jug. Then Rachele Hamilton and Richard Lesperance were named as the Winter Sports royalty. The night was topped by the Panthers beating the Wa- mego Red Raiders 58-47. This victory gave Concordia the possession of the traveling trophy. The Winter Sports Festival concluded with a dance, held on Saturday night, instead of after the game on Friday. Coach Bob Baumann's talent-laden squad has to be one of the most powerful teams ever assembled at CHS. Gifted with a fine stable of sprinters led by Larry Walton, Bill Carlow, Fred Foster, Alan Souchek, and Norman Clark, the Panthers dominated the Sprint events throughout the season. The distance runners led by John Horkman, Doug Mon- toya, Mike Montoya, Mike McMenomey, Bryan Deal, and Mike O'Connor Dominated the 880, mile, two mile, and two-mile relay during the entire relay circuit. Tremendous improvement in the field events culminated with Larry Walton's 195 feet 10 1 2 inch javelin throw which placed him first in the state championships and established a new school record for this event Still another outstanding performance was turned in by Mark Breault, junior pole vaulter, who vaulted 13 feet 4 inches and placed third in state compe- tition. A large part of the improvement of the field events can be directly traced to the outstanding job by coaches Larry Nelson and Jim Coppoc, who spent many long hours instructing these two young men. -Coach Baumann. Jenni Emmel holds the new high jump record for both the Concordia and Chapman meets while Margo Thompson holds the new record in the 880 yard run for these meets. The best team performance by the track squad was exhib- ited when Concordia won the Marysville Triangular and placed fourth in their own invitational meet. In the regional meet Jenni Emmel placed second in the high jump and Margo Thompson placed fourth in the 880 yard run. For their participation in track this year, Jenni Emmel, Margo Thompson, Jacque Passmore, Peggy Colby, and Cleo Childers each earned a letter. Mr. Miner--ass't director The 1972-73 band year began for some band members - the twirlers and the flag twirlers - in the middle of the sum- mer. Then Mr. Ensign and the band in its entirety welcomed the assistant band di- rector, Mr. Miner, and his ideas for a proud marching season by turning out for marching practice in the hot w’eek before school began. The practice paid off in the most spectacular football show's CHS has ever seen, and the expense of the new uniforms was justified in the very com- plimentary II rating received at Wichita State University in the first precision marching contest the band has ever en- tered. As usual, Pep Band enjoyed play- ing its unique kind of music at pep as- semblies and Basketball games and re- ceived favorable comment from home fans and visitors alike. The successful marching season aptly introduced the advent of Concert Band, w'hich was praised by clinicians at League Clinic, as was Stage Band at the Riley County Stage Band Festival. Clinics by Paul Shull and The K-State staff and by Matt Benton were a helpful new’ activity for the band, which brought home fourteen I ratings from State Contest. Choir and the small groups toured on two separate oc- casions, and climaxed their year with a well- attended spring concert. Kolage BON MARCHE FRONT ROW LETT TO RIGHT: L. Pettygrove, J. Hedstrom, R. The vigorous leadership was exercised by Richard Lesperance, president; Larry Metro, vice-president; Alice Thornton, secretary; and Randy Lagasse, treasurer. The officers received their leadership training and inspiration at the StuCo workshop sponsored by K.S.H. A. A. in early August. StuCo directed the two social and sports highlights of the year: Homecoming and Winter Sports Festival. The activities included the promotion of school spirit and pride with the Spirit Stick and Spirit Jug contests. I he class of 1975 won both times. Both events also featured dances and coronations. Magazine sales were again successful in raising money to finance the foreign exchange student. StuCo reps organized the drive which produced $2400. 00. One-third of this amount was placed in class treasuries. As a memorial tribute to Luke Duncan and Dennis LaBarge, StuCo purchased a new pine trophy case. The case currently stands in the main hall entrance and holds contemporary trophies in assorted extracurricular activities. Future plans call for the trophy case to be placed in the new commons area when the media center is complete. The organization in its weekly meetings served as a forum for student opinions and needs. In an ef- fort to make school a better place in which to learn, the student group collected and organized recommendations for improvement and submit- ted them to the administration. In order to gain a broader per- spective on other student coun- cils, Concordia High held an exchange visit with Belleville High School. Both sides ex- pressed the idea that such a program was profitable. The StuCo advisory board continued its intended objective, meet- ing once each semester. In both meetings the administra- tion and students discussed mutual problems and needs. The productive efforts of these meetings can be expressed as improved communications and deeper understanding. The 165 mem- bers changed the name to Panther Pride Pushers; later adopting a new uniform designed to place empha- sis on our school colors. This year was a first in having locker signs and run-throughs for the teams each game. One of our fantastic pep assemblies included a draw- ing for the red and white basket- ball signed by all the players. At our last pep assembly, Mr. Carrier presented our president, Linda Samuelson with a picture of the club, now displayed in the main hall. For regionals, our club pre- sented the trainer, manager, ten players, two alternates, and coach- es with smile pins for good luck. Officers were L. Samuelson, pres.; P. Heald, v.-pres. ; S. The traditional tightrope walker accompanied the more death-defying man-eating lions. The annual Thanksgiving as- sembly and baskets were once again welcome attractions. The Yuletide season was highlighted by the holly sales and the Christmas Ball which starred WHITE LEAD. However, a newer crowd pleaser was the Kayette Kapers Talent Show to sponsor an overseas orphan. Audiences applauded the Secret Heart Sister's magnificant performance on February 14th. Of course, the Rabbit Review, a Mother-Daughter Tea, was spectacularly spot- lighted. Perhaps the highlight of the year was Miss Vinson, the ringmaster, and her presenta- tion to the performers. The CHS Kayettes were the first ones to publicly view the newly created Kay-Kayette banner designed by the vice-princi- pal of Concordia, Mr. Don L. Musick. PANTHER. The seven students in Jour- nalism II put out the first three issues on their own, by selling ads and writing stories. Early in the year, Journalism II learned how to develop film and to take and print pictures. This was a new job to them since Photography Club had done it for them in the past. This was Mr. Talley's seventh year as advisor for the PANTHER. This year the PANTHER received many compliments for its outstanding school publication, but there is always room for improvement--a challenge that the next year's PANTHER staff will strive to meet. With these congratulations are extended also our wishes for a prosperous and happy life in the years to come. James P. Post—Junior-high Principal May I take this opportunity to congratulate the students and faculty of Concordia Junior-Senior High School. Your accomplishments were many and varied. The academic ex- cellence was balanced by superior achievement in the ac- tivities. This is indicative of a well-rounded educational program based on pride. I would also like to personally thank both students and staff for their input of new ideas into the formulation of next year's curriculum offerings. By your participation you have helped write your program for your school. Finally, it is with the utmost pride I congratulate you on meeting the challenge of becoming a proud citizen as well as a student. We at Concordia Junior-Senior High expect much of students today. Indeed, far more than that which was expected of us. We must always strive to be better. Yet hopefully we will never forget the relativity of a students world. The desires, wishes, values and attitudes of today's youth are no different than past generations. They are, however, greatly speeded up. That you have been able to succeed at so rapid a pace is the epitome of educational endeavor. A. A. Carrier It's good-bye and good luck to Mr. Musick, who might better be known as Mr. Panther , from the years he has spent at CHS in the capacities of both principal and as- sistant principal. An integral part of Panther Pride has been provided by his red coat and his black panther cartoons. Although, by his own admission, it took 11 years for him to get out of CHS instead of the customary 4, his contributions to the system will last much, much longer than that. In his last appearance before the student body, Mr. Mu- sick asked for a going-away-present (to be delivered later) in the form of a CHS representation at the State Basketball Tourney. See you there, Mr. Musick—and soon! 51 Board Of Education SITTING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Paul Koehn-Ass't. Supt. , George Kocher, Dr. Hugh Hattan-President, Harold Clark- Supt. The Lost City Of Atlantis The Junior Class completed the lovely undersea city of Atlantis just in time for the Prom on May 5 from nine to twelve. In the old gym, where the dance was held, the theme was carried out in the colors of ice blue and hot green. The entrance way into the old gym became a cave leading into Atlantis. One forty-foot wall of the gym was completely covered with fish and fishnets. The other walls were done in seaweed murals of blue and green. Also done in blues and greens, the ceiling was draped with alternating colored streamers. Four pillars and a fountain decorated the center floor of Atlantis. -CHS PANTHER These C.H.S. students look forward to a wonderful evening. Dining And Dancing The all-purpose room became encased in blue and green crepe streamer waves, hung horizontally on the walls. Fishnet hung from the ceiling. Shell candles were table center- pieces, with coral-colored tablecloths. Refreshments included green sea punch, cake, and homemade mints. RIGHT: After being served, everyone enjoyed refreshments as they sat around tables and talked. LEFT: The approximately 150 people who attended prom enjoyed dancing to the music provided by the Beast 106 Salutatorians: Sarah Everitt, Jim Pearson, Lee Ann Wiltse. Honor students maintaining 3. 75 or better grade average for four years: BOTTOM: V. Sulanka, S. Weigand, L. Metro, M. Hanson, B. Carlow, S. Everitt. TOP: L. Samuelson, D. Folkerts, J. Pearson, D. Koehn, L. Wiltse. 107 On May 23, 1973, the senior class of Concordia High School met in its entirety for the last time. After the invocation by Reverend David Seward, Sarah Ever- itt played a clarinet solo followed by Shelly Weigand's flute solo. The choir sang This is What We Are and Hail to Thee Concordia. Daryl Koehn and Melanie Hanson, co-valedictorians, gave the commencement addresses. Then Mr. Carrier, our principal, spoke about the class, and Dr. Hattan, president of the Board of Education, with the help of Mr. Clark our superin- tendent, presented the diplomas. It was a time of ex- cessive happiness for some since they were finally out of school, but for others it was a time of sadness since they were leaving an integral part of their life. How- ever, for all it was a time for thankfulness for all the help they received from others over the years. HURKARU for 1972-73 would still be on the drawing board, had it not been for the untiring efforts of its editor-in- chief, Lea Ann Wiltse. She spent countless hours planning lay-outs, running down copy, cajoling photographers, setting up appointments, and taking care of all those monotonous tasks which don't show up in the finished product. Special thanks go to the business and professional peo- ple of the community who pur- chased advertising, to Mr. Barnhart and the Photography Club, Bergman Studio, the CONCORDIA BLADE-EMPIRE for pictures and to Jan Wiltse for the artwork. Mr. Musick and Mr. Carrier were very helpful in setting up times for the taking of group pictures and Mr. Thompson kindly allowed the staff to utilize the facilities of the library work room. All of these things are sincerely appreciated, and are a very real part of the memories of '72-'73. In Appreciation 112 PAULETTE’S R. L.
