HURKARU 1971-1972 Concordia High School Concordia, Kansas Editorial Staff: Mary Trude Doran Chaput Susan Scheibler Donna Spafford Mrs. Ruth Shull - Adviser Gently, carefully my mind responds to a kaleidoscopic maze of knowledge: I recognize Rafael's painting I write my first letter to the Editor I memorize theorems I experiment, question, reason, conclude And I discover From my first shadowed, sheltered moment of obscurity to my present of emerging celebrity I learn Knowledge can never be confined within our four-walled fortress with its language laboratory, resource center, and swimming pools or from 8:00 to 2:45 It is a process of continuity. by Joan Hara St. Anthony Village H.S. Minneapolis, Minnesota golf, tennis, and cross country, while the rest of the tribe gathered in a great pow wow to cheer their braves on to victory. He then moves on to other tribesmen filling the skys with music of praise to the great gods, while around the bright burning fires of knowledge the children listen to the medicine man's debate with nature. Ritual celebrations and dances are per- iodically conducted in the main lodge where braves and maidens gather to appease the gods. Thus this great scout, Hurkaru, has left behind the message of the journey made by his tribe through the high land of growing up. His is an eter- nal tribe, a never ending stream of students reaching far into the future bearing a message that will never dim. Upon entering Panther land one sees the artifacts of the great Indian scout as he marked his trail with the 1971-72 message. On his buf- falo robe he has drawn the life of his village. Legend recalls rituals performed before the great god Graduation swept through the land and scattered the tribesmen far and wide. He first pictures the days when the young braves proved their manhood with great battles in foot- ball, basketball, wrestling, track, 2 HAROLD CLARK - SUPERINTENDENT PAUL KOEHN - ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Big Chiefs Mark the Way I wish to congratulate the students and staff of CHS for a very outstanding 1971-72 school year. Dur- ing this year, many students have received recognition for excellent performance in several areas of our cur- riculum. Such accomplishments bring pride and honor to our school and community. In addition to the en- viable records made by many students, one highlight which should be remembered is the contribution stu- dents have made to CHS through the new Student- Faculty Advisory Council. This council has made possible greater participation by students in the opera- tion of their high school. Several important problem areas were studied in depth and desirable solutions evolved. Best wishes for the future. Harold M. Clark The present division of the adminstrative duties in our unified school district places most of the assistant superintendent’s duties under the broad category of curriculum development and evaluation. He is con- cerned with the quality and character of instruction during the regular school year and summer school. He is directly involved with most of the district's federal aid projects, which includes submitting and evaluating the projects. The instructional program of a school district re- quires constant attention. It includes adding courses, deleting courses, or changing the content of some courses. It also involves planning the implementing in-service experiences for the professional staff, the adoption of textbooks, and the selecting of supportive educational materials for use in the school district. JAMES POST--Junior High Principle Musick Baumann Lead the Way Mr. Musick, with Mr. Baumann's qualified help, led the student body of CHS through a very successful year. As usual, many honors were bestowed upon him. In addition to heading the Kansas Education Club, he was on the program for both the National High School Activities Association and the Kansas State High School Activities Association Conventions. But the rest of the time I've spent trying to be High School principal. In this time, his work as principal has included initiat- ing the three-phase study hall plan and advancing the Student Faculty Advisory Board. MR. StuCo took several initiative steps this year in trying to be a meaningful part of school life. A StuCo - Faculty Advisory Group was instituted to serve as a sounding board for students. The major project of this board was the development of a three-phase study hall plan. In addition to these innovations StuCo sponsored the traditional Homecoming and the Winter Sports Festival to promote school spirit. The StuCo-sponsored magazine drive provided revenue for the continued support of a foreign student at CHS. StuCo also helped sponsor the Marymount production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Field trips included a leadership workshop at Manhattan High, a visit with the city police, a workshop at Salina South, and a stu dent-exchange with Marysville High. Elementary, junior high, and high school teachers were assisted by club members to better understand the duties of the teaching profession. Meetings were held every other Monday with pro- grams related to the teaching field and special pro- jects were planned. The FTA'ers also visited Mary- mount College and the Kansas Technical Institute to learn about teacher preparation, invited Santa and the children of the faculty to a Christmas party, and attended the state FTA convention at KSU. Janice Budreau was elected to the state office of corresponding secretary at the state convention in April. The club completed its year with a picnic. 55 The cheerleaders exhibit the spirit felt by the whole Pep Club. 1st: M. Hanson, P. Heald, D. Fahlstrom, C. Gruber, J. Sor- rell, L. Bell, A. Tracy, N. The club began its successful sea- son with an overpowering member- ship drive. Daryl Koehn, vice- president, headed the search for members. Using the theme, Make your fortune--Join Kay- ettes as bait, Daryl captured 110 Concordia High School girls. No- vember was truly a time of thanks as shown by the Thanksgiving bas- kets contributed by the students of C. H. S. The project, directed by Marie Desilet, was sponsored by Kayettes. December was accented by the Christmas Ball. Holly dec- orated the doors of many homes, to escort in the new year. Feb- ruary 14 proved to be an especially busy day because the teachers were all given hearts wishing them a happy Valentine's Day. Also brightening Valentine's day was Miss Wanda May Vinson. At the annual Christmas Ball, Dirk Hanson and Pat Owensby were crowned king and queen of the Christmas festivities. Kayettes undertook another one of their difficult projects by cleaning the trophy cases before the bas- ketball tournament. Wanda May Vinson, Kansas State Director of Kayettes, made a Valentine's Day visit to CHS Kayettes to inspire them and inform them of the happenings of Kayettes on the state level. 59 Hurkaru — the Message — Under the direction of its able (and sometimes frantic) sponsor, Mrs. Shull, and its co-editors, Mary Trude and Doran Chaput, the yearbook staff of CHS prepares an accurate record of the year's events. The members not only work hard to prepare the book, but they also work to earn money to pay for the books through such means as having the concessions stand (PICTURED AT BOTTOM LEFT) and soliciting ads from local businessmen. Many hours of work and effort go into the publication of the annual as the members of the staff lay out pages (PICTURED AT RIGHT), prepare copy, recopy pages, and check and recheck pages until they meet the satisfication of all incolved. The hours are long and the work is hard, especially when those turn-in dates appear, but all are rewarded when the last magical page is done and ready to tum-in (PICTURED AT TOP LEFT. ) The members of this year's yearbook staff are CLOCKWISE FROM THE BOTTOM D. Their publica- tion, CHS PANTHER, is circulated through- out the classrooms instanteously replacing the humdrum activity of the hour. The paper contains the latest news stories concerning the student body, as well as its alliterative creations including Pint-size Profile and Panther Particles. 61 Future Farmers of America The Astro- Notes, consis- ting of Bill Carlow, Bob Carlow, Don Carlow, and Daniel Seitz, who are all members of FFA, have had numerous hon- ors. Panthers Face Tough Battles on Gridiron With only seven seniors taking part on this year's football team, it was an uphill battle from the start. With the lack of sen- ior experience, the Panthers dropped their first three games to Clay Center, Wamego, and Marysville. The Cats got on their feet and defeated their next three opponants: rival Belleville; Sa- cred Heart (to enliven the Homecoming festivities); and Beloit, in the new overtime ruling. Even so, tough competition caused the Panthers to bow to Abilene, Phillipsbuig, and Chapman to end the season. Coach Nelson gives hurried sideline instructions. BOTTOM ROW: E. Johnson, M. The streets were alive with shouted greetings and whispered gossip as returning citizens renewed old friendships and brought each other up on the latest news. All were caught in frenzied activity as they prepared for the coronation of the queen. As the people gathered for the great event, each wondered who the lucky girl would be. They watched in breathless anticipation as the royal crier fumbled with the all-important parchment. Finally, the seal was broken and as the crier read the name, pandemonium broke loose. The lucky girl covered her face as the others applauded the sel- ection. In a daze she sat down on her throne and glanced happily at her sub- jects. She was queen. Coach Meyer summed up the season by saying, The 1971-72 CHS basketball squad brought their share of thrills and honors to the fans, but I'll remember them most for the fact that they never gave up, even in the face of the most trying situations. The CHS cagers closed the season with a 13 win-9 loss record; however, these facts are very misleading. Coach Tac- ha stated that This was a season of ups and downs, with the team involved in many close games and de- feating many teams by big scores. There never was a game that the Panthers weren't in contention until the very end. Enthusiasm and state hopes soared high af- ter the Panthers defeated highly ranked Clay Center in the opening game, 56-48. The Concordia Invitational saw the Panthers edging out Berean Academy (64-60) to defeated with a reverse score of 60-64 by Hays. They then earned a 3rd place trophy by trouncing Man- hattan 75-57. The defeat of Bellville in overtime (86-83) sent the Panthers to regional with plenty of pride. There they tromped Sabetha (71-54) and nar- rowly but triumphantly defeated Marysville (64-63) in a tense overtime battle. In the championship game with Chapman, narrow leads were exchanged until halftime when things seemed to go wrong. After a 58- 75 defeat, dejected Panthers accepted the second place trophy while loyal fans changed, We're from Concordia; there isn't any prouder! And they meant every word of it! Ass't Coach George Meyer and Head Coach John Tacha discuss game strategy. Record Statistics: The 1971-72 team established two new season records of 280 steals and 1016 rebounds, along with three new game records of 97 field goal attempts, 53 free throw at- tempts, and 40 completed free throws. Mike Charbonneau set new highs of 10 assists in one game and 111 for the season as did Clark Coco with a 79. 5 per cent free throw mark. Basketball and Wrestling Homecoming 1972 The winter sports of basketball and wrestling cele- brated their Homecoming this year in a different man- ner by crowning both a king and queen. The festivities took place on February 18, during the Concordia-Wa- mego basketball game. Crowned king and queen were Mike Charbonneau and Cindy Balthazor. The spirit jug was put up for grabs for the first time and was taken by the class of 1973. Our team was very young, we only had two seniors out this year, so I'm looking forward to some really great teams in the next couple of years-especially with the Jr. High Program started this year. Out of the thirty-two boys that stayed out for the entire season, Jerry Istas and Everitt Mendenhall did outstanding work and were chosen as co-captains of the squad. The concert featured American folk music, including such numbers as American Civil War Fantasy and American Folk Rhapsody. They also performed numbers which they later played at State Music Festival in April. At this festival several solos and en- sembles received I ratings. The CHS Concert Band also was invited to the Hays Band Clinic at Hays. Only five bands, chosen from throughout the state, are invited. Welcome Home was the band's fi- nal concert of the year, featuring Laurel King Ulrich, a former student of CHS. Don Carlow, CHS senior trumpeter, represented the CHS band and FFA Chapter at the FFA National Convention. Don played first chair in the National Bnad which featured over one-hundred outstanding FFA'ers from across the country. He was the recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award, having the largest number of points ever accumulated. Any way you look at it, the new uniforms of the CHS Marching Band look sharp! 90 Dr. J. C. Combs Underclassmen dominated the Stage Band this year. They went on a tour to Beloit Girls' Industrial School, Lincoln, and Minneapolis. They also performed at the Middle School and for the Junior High. When Stage Band went to Riley County Stage Band Clinic, seven people were chosen for the All Star Honor Stage Bands. Those attending entered the gar- den through a white summer house decorated with pink roses. The romantic garden was surrounded by a brick wall on which was hung a magnificent col- ored mural of a beautiful garden. In the middle there was an arbor-covered fountain full of floating roses. Adding to the decorations were multi-colored tissue balls hanging from the ceiling, rose trellises, and clinging vines, all blending in with the gym's main colors—light and dark pink. The colors were changed in the All-Purpose room and hallway to hot pink, hot green, and hot yellow. Colored streamers adorned the walls and ceiling. The tables were de- corated with candles and the lights with multi-col- ored flowers. The Rising Suns provided music for this year's Prom. The class of 1972 assembles for the last time. Graduation On May 23, 1972, the senior class of Concordia High School met as a whole for the last time. After an in- troduction by Superintendent Harold Clark, Don Carlow played a trumpet solo followed by Doran Chaput's bar- itone solo. A mixed ensemble, con- sisting mainly of seniors, sang the traditional Road Hot Taken and our school song Hail to Thee. Mike Machen gave the commencement ad- dress after which Mr. Music, our principal, spoke of the class and pre- sented their diplomas. It was a time of happiness and pride but also, to some extent, a time of sadness. While the graduates do have many wonderful memories to look back up- on, they have gained experience to look ahead into the exciting, yet un- known, future with confidence. We the Concordia High School graduating class of 1972 would like to thank everyone, especially our fam- ilies and teachers, who have guided us thus far on our journey through life. A proud moment for both mother and daughter. 98 JUNIOR HIGH Eighth TOP ROW: J. Demanette, E. Deneault, K. Doyen, J. Eagelson, J. Exnxnel, E. Eustice, C. Farr, N. Floe. 2nd ROW: L. Collette, D. This trip would have been impossible without the cooperation received along the way from students, faculty, and townspeople alike. Particular appreciation is paid to CHS Principal Don L. Musick for designing the cover and the divi- sion pages. Hurkaru is happy to preserve the message of Mr. Musick's generous sharing of his artistic talents. Other artwork was done by Tracy White, class of 74, who brought JULIUS CAESAR up-to-date by way of the cartoon world of Peanuts and his pals. Thanks, too. go to the people of the community for their advertising support. The message of '72 would not have gotten through without their help. The pressures of meeting timetable deadlines were eased by the combined efforts of Mr. Swit er, Mr. Barnhart’s Photography Club, and the CONCORDIA BLADE EMPIRE. Finally , the entire journey as recorded in these pages was the result of student life w ithin the halls and classrooms and on the concert stage and the playing fields of CHS. Thanks to each and every one. Hurkaru 115 THE END 120
