Those Were the Days, My Friend 1971 Hurkaru Concordia High School Concordia, Kansas Foreword Those days for the freshmen meant algebra and gym classes and finally being one of the big guys. Those days for the sopho- mores meant JULIUS CAESAR and biology and really getting in there and playing the game. Those days for the juniors meant American history and class rings and the prom. Those days for the seniors meant hall passes and government and graduation. Those were the days, my friend. BACK: Martha Fyfe- Clerk, Harold Clark- Superintendent, Paul Koehn- Assistant Superintendent. Board of Education Seven interested citizens concerned with the Concordia and Jamestown school system meet once a month with the superintendent and assistant superintendent as the Board of Education for Unified District 333. They represent the public and determine the general policies of the school system. The Board of Education has been especially busy this year with the North Central Evaluation. We owe our thanks to these people for their dedication in maintaining and improving the quality of our school. Secretaries for the Board of Education are (ABOVE) Miss Martha Fyfe, Mrs. Stanley Green, and (RIGHT) Mrs. Curtis Bankers. 4 Mr. Clark and Mr. Koehn Care About Concordia PAUL KOEHN Assistant Superintendent HAROLD CLARK Superintendent Mr. Harold Clark and Mr. Paul Koehn are con- cerned with the school and community. They have put in many hours with the North Central evaluation of the school. This has included the views of par- ents, students, and teachers and will make it easier for the Board of Education, Mr. Clark, and Mr. Koehn to fulfill the educational needs of Concordia. Already changes are being made. One of the most significant is the purchase of the Notre Dame High School for use as an intermediate school for the fifth and sixth graders. This will now make more room in the high school and junior high for the in- creasing enrollment. This evaluation has also re- sulted in their approval for the addition of new courses and the strengthening of some departments in the high school. Mr. Clark and Mr. Koehn get involved for the community with the addition of mustaches and beard, a contribution to the Concor- dia centennial. 5 Administration 1970-71 Was a Busy School Year for Mr. Musick In addition to heading up things at Concordia High School, Mr. Musick headed up things in most high schools and junior high schools in Kansas because he was president of the Kansas State High School Activities Associa- tion. Mr. Musick still found time to be crea- tive and designed a new emblem for K. S. H. S. A. A. and a medal for Concordia High School to use at special events such as basketball tournaments and track meets. As Activities Director, Mr. Baumann was able to assist Mr. Musick by scheduling the many high school and junior high events that occured during the year. Eleven of the new representatives attended a regional workshop in Manhattan and came back with a better knowledge of student council. Before long the council was sponsoring the annual maga- zine sales - which was acclaimed as the best cam- paign in the history of the school - that finances the foreign exchange student program. Proceeds from this annual campaign brought exchange student James Python of Lausanne, Switzerland, to Concor- dia during the 1970-71 school year. Student coun- cil organized the Homecoming festivities, obtained for the students' use a jukebox and Pepsi machine and placed it in the multipurpose room, hosted the NCK League Student Council Conference, organized the Winter Sports Festival, and served as the studen dents' channel to the administration for change and understanding of the school system. The progressive student council provided the students with a jukebox and Pepsi machine. The students enjoyed the service and the atmosphere in which to visit with old friends and get acquainted with other students. 52 French Club FRONT ROW: C. Doyen- Vice-President, S. A lot of time and effort have been spent by the Hurkaru staff to re- cord the days of Concordia High School. The theme, Those Were the Days, My Friend, was chosen because it represented the Concor- dia centennial along with the changing age we will remember in future years. The cover design, which shows the variety of fashions in 1970 and 1971, was made by Pegg Owensby through the art department. Students who sold advertisements for the yearbook were Sally Mat- thew, Sonia Johnston, Diane Doy- en, Doran Chaput, John Breault, Carol Doyen, Debbie Hunnicutt, Beth Carlgren, Mary Trude, James Nault, Freda Radcliffe, Marva Fairbanks, Diann Lambert, Janet Souchek, and Ruth Wiesner. Then the club members selected teachers in the elemen- tary schools, the junior high and high school and gained understanding of the teaching pro- fession by grading papers and occasionally sub- stitute teaching. At the meeting held every other Monday of the month, the club had pro- grams and planned special projects. The FTA'ers entered a float in the homecoming parade, visited several schools and colleges, had Santa Claus come to a Christmas party for the teachers' children, and a paperback book sale. At the state convention, twenty-six stu- dents campaigned for Cindy Chaput and Linda Hattan, who ran for state offices. The club had a good year and celebrated the close of it with a picnic. Discussing campaign plans for state office with Mr. Dunlap are Linda Hattan and Cindy Chaput. Linda Hattan won a position on the State FTA Executive Committee as state recording secretary. Cindy put up a good fight for state president. MATTHEW GREENHOUSES B -Team Cheerleaders: (BACK) Mary Gocke, Deanna Hol- bert - Head, Melanie Hanson, (FRONT) Julie Chubbuck. Pep Club Projects Spirit 65 Kayettes Are a Positive Influence In the Silver Anniversary Year Melanie Hanson hands off to Debbie Hunnicutt in the annual Powder Puff game held this year between Denver's Dames coached by Mr. Wiliams and Mr. Trueblood and Mills' Monsters coached by Mrs. Mills. Denver's Dames won the game with a final score of 14-6. The game was a successand enough money for an overseas orphan was raised. Camp delegates from the board of directors, Carol Doyen and Diann Lambert, came back all enthused and ready to help the Concordia High School Kayettes celebrate the Kay- ettes' silver anniversary in style. The first meeting of the year was a Kayette Wedding (complete with Mr. Dunlap to escort the bride) to wed the new members to the club. A reception for the 124 members followed. Then the Kayettes got busy and organized teams for the annual Powder Puff Football Game to finance an overseas orphan. But time out was taken to send eight club members to the regional con- ference in Junction City. Next they put underway the Thanksgiving project of baskets to the needy and the school assembly, which was revised to suit the students. In the first part of December, state representative Miss Wanda May Vinson visited with the board of directors and the club. And the remaining part of December was spent in preparation for the Christmas Ball - co-hosted with Pep Club and centered around the theme Saturnalia , a Roman festival from which some of our Christmas customs originated. The girls then returned to work and cleaned the school trophies, packed cans of penny candy and pre-sweetened drinks for local boys in Vietnam, and had a tasting bee besides the regular meetings. Homecoming Queen Pam Heald Debbie Crough Becky Bramwell Marcia Fleming 1970-71 Homecoming Homecoming was cele- brated with a parade of bands, queen and attend- ants, and class floats. The seniors proudly took first place. Just moments after the crowning are escorts Doug Herman, Mike Lesperance, Gary Sisler, Sheldon Ganstrom, Dennis Barba, and royalty Loretta Swenson, Marcia Fleming, Queen Pam Heald, Debbie Crough, and Becky Bramwell. Pam waves to her fans in the grandstand. Excited students, returning alumni, and interested people of Concordia gathered in the junior high gymnasium on Octo- ber 23 for the 1970 Homecoming Assembly. A roll call of the classes revealed that Mr. Art Lewis of the Class of 1917 and Miss Ruth Decker of the class of 1921 should receive the gifts. The alumnus coming the greatest distance was Bill Bryant. The traditional pep talk was given by Loren Swen- son, a 1965 graduate of Concordia High School and brother of one of the queen candidates. He gave a short talk and the assembly proceeded to the introduction of the football team and the presentation of the homecoming queen candidates. Master of Ceremonies Floyd Anderson ripped open the envel- ope and announced to the impatient crowd that the Home- coming Queen for 1970 would be Miss Pam Heald. Pam reigned at the homecoming parade following the assembly and that evening at an exciting game with the Beloit Tro- jans. Afterwards, students and alumni danced to the sounds of The Central Park at the homecoming dance. 75 A-Team: G. Moore, C. Coco, B. Tyler, G. Sisler, B. Wiesner, S. Bauer, M. Lesperance, L.
