Yesterday Is Experience; Tomorrow Is Hope; Today Is Getting From One To The Other As Best You Can. 1970 Hurkaru Concordia High School Concordia, Kansas Foreword As we work toward graduation, we realize that our days of school- ing have given us many experi- ences. We might remember life as the school play or a tennis game. Some of our experiences are ac- complishment, others are frustrat- ion. But always we are waiting for tomorrow and hope better things for ourselves and others. Student Council After each homeroom had selected a Student Council Representative, the Student Council met and began revising the dress code. Members at- tended a breakfast with the administration to dis- cuss the new code and other school activities. New ideas were found when some Council mem- bers attended the Student Council League meet- ing at Abilene, and a student exchange was made with Sacred Heart High School in Salina. Student Council was in charge of Homecoming activities, the St. Patrick's Day Massacre, and a battle of the bands. Other projects include heading the magazine sales which raise money for Concordia's AFS program, purchasing a new popcorn machine for the school, and contribut- ing money to UNICEF. Student Council builds good relations between students and the administration. 54 FT A Gains Experience Through Participation With the help of sponsors, Carmen Davis and Marvin Dunlap, FTA members completed several projects this year. The Board entertained the teachers at the annual Faculty Tea, a potluck membership party was held in the city park, Powder Puff football practice began, and the game between Dunblood's Devils and the Bullroars was played to raise money to adopt a foreign child. The same week as the game, a regional conference of the Kansas Association for Youth was held at Con- cordia. Kayettes also sponsored the annual Thanksgiving assembly, assisted the Jaycees by selling peanut butter to help children with cere- bral palsy, sent cookies to local boys in Vietnam, and participated in the Kayette-Pep Club Christ- mas Ball. Girls interested in joining Kayettes attended the member- ship party held in the park. 145 girls became members of the club this year. 59 Cheerleaders: L. Swenson, D. Holbert, C. Richard, S. Journalism The journalism classes are responsible for publishing the school paper, THE PANTHER. This includes writing editor- ials, reviewing school events, covering sports events, solic- iting advertisments, and learning to meet deadlines. Several students took turns at being the editor, and each page of the paper had an editor and assigned reporters. The stu- dents were able to prove their year's experience to Mr. Tal- ley when the final project was having each student write and edit his own four page newspaper. Prom — Beautiful Evening In 'The Southern Gardens' Junior, Loretta Swenson, can hardly wait to show Prom to Senior date, Terry White. The 'mint Julips' served in the Southern Garden were very popular Prom night. The evening went quickly with laughter and the enjoyable band. 98 The Rising Sons , a seven piece show band, were enjoyed by everyone and provided beautiful entertainment. As everyone concentrated on their dancing, our wily photographer captured some interesting expressions. Karla Cory and Brice Leon stop to pose for a quick picture. 'The Rising Sons' Provide The Entertainment After much hard work on the part of the Juniors and con- siderable 'date hunting', the 1970 Prom was a great success. The theme, Southern Gardens, was fulfilled by using paper flowers and colored streamers to denote the garden. The sky was dark purple streamers hung with florescent stars. A mural of a southern mansion overlooked the gym and a fountain graced the center of the garden. Class president, Karla Cory, and sponser, Miss Boyd spent much time in organizing and we're sure they were well rewarded. 99 Baccalaureate Reverend Robert M. Fleenor of the First United Methodist Church addressed the graduates on Life's Style . Mr. Musick pronounced Marla Kalivoda valedictorian and Dana Rasure salutatorian of the Class of 1970. In spite of the rain, all graduates and many families and friends attended Baccalaureate Services. Graduation Delmer Harris, Terry White, Brenda Borst, Dana Rasure, and Marla Kali- voda were named as the Principal's Honor Scholars. All had averages of 3. 85 or above. Speakers for the Commence- ment Exercises were members of the graduating class. Chris Ham- ilton spoke for his classmates about WAR AND THE HUMAN SPIRIT and Marla Kalivoda en- titled her speech IN NEWNESS OF LIFE. The Class of 1970, in their red and white robes, await the presentation of their diplomas. 101 Graduation is also a time of honors. Among the students re- ceiving scholarships were Joyce Laman, Janet Snavely, and De- anna Folkerts who received their scholarships from Mr. Walter Morgan, who acted in behalf of the American Legion. Greg Hat- tan was selected to receive the Ray Culley Memorial Award for the best overall athelete for 1970, and Rick Yarnell was awarded the Ed Walters Free Throw' Champion Aw'ard.
