All The World’s A Stage And All The Men And Women Merely Players. And One Man In His Time Plays Many Parts.” 1968 Hurkaru Concordia High School Concordia, Kansas Foreword Contents During the course of the 67-68 school year at CHS, the students encountered many different facets of school life. As Shakes- peare once said, All the world's a stage, and in this 68 Hurkaru you will find many of the different parts that the students played in their roles as aspiring young citizens. Administration Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Organizations Athletics Activities Junior High 2 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Clark And Koehn Head District The school year of 1967-68 has been one of many challenges and accomplishments for the stu- dents and faculty’ of Concordia Senior High School. Opportunities are available to every student if only sought, as well as achievements if there is a will- ingness to pay the price of hard work and dedication. It is so easy in our society today for young people to follow the fatalistic philosophy of such groups as the hippies , sit-inners, and militant noncon- formists. It is generally agreed such methods as used by these groups in pursuing their point of view is not acceptable behavior. In view of the disturbing restlessness in our society, I wish to challenge each student of C. H. S. to face their problem with sound and rational thinking prior to action. Our society needs such leaders and welcomes such persons now and in the future. Congratulations to the Hurkaru staff for the work they have done in recording much of the history of 1967-68 in C. H. S. Best wishes for the future. Mr. Koehn is serving his second year as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. The assistant superinten- dent's duties are varied. Most of his duties come under the broad category of curriculum and instruc- tion. He is concerned with the character and quality of instruction in our school district, includ- ing the regular school year and summer school. Our district participates in several projects which involve federal aid. It is his responsibility to submit these projects and evaluate them, as required. Maintaining and improving the instructional quality in the school is a continuing process. It involves a continuous program of curriculum revi- sion, evaluating the objectives of courses and sub- jects offered, and measurement of educational achievement and progress. The assistant superinten- dent assists in planning in-service growth experi- ences for teachers, the adoption of textbooks and educational materials for use in the district, the measurement of pupils' performance through the district-wide testing program and the evaluating of the services of the instructional staff. 4 --Harold M. Clark. Musick And Betts Head High School CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU, THE PANTHERS OF 1967-68. This has been an outstanding year in your high school career. It is one that you will long remember and cherish in years to come. You have given a great effort and reaped a rich harvest of success in scholarship, music, art, debate, forensics, athletics, homemaking, vocational agriculture, and other areas of school endeavor. Many of you have gained area, state, and national recognition which speaks well of you, your instructors, school and community. They are justly proud of you and your adminis- trators are too. We are interested in each of you and your success in life. We wish you seniors greater success as you go forth into the world and for you returning Panthers we hope that you will endeavor to make the most of the educational opportunities that are available to you in your future years at Concordia High. -- Donald Musick The Vice Principal and Activities Director is an administrative position, currently held by Mr. Betts, who holds an MA Degree in Administra- tion and an Administrative Certificate from the State Department of Education. The Vice Principal is directly responsible to the Sr. High Principal and also serves the Jr. High Principal to a lesser degree. The duties of the Vice Principal include scheduling of all activities for Jr. and Sr. High School; schedul- ing school facilities for both Jr. and Sr. High; setting teacher work schedules for activities; hiring and paying officials; helping in Sr. High attendance and discipline. The job is time consuming but is very interest- ing and challenging. Mr. Betts feels the experience gained in this position was instrumental in his qualifying for the Principalship at Oberlin High School, where he will be next year. --Hcrshel Betts To The Junior High During the ten years that I have been principal of Concordia Junior High School many changes have come to our country, city, and schools. Some of these changes have been good; some have been of questionable nature. For those who are leaving CJHS. as well as for those who will replace them, I wish every happiness and success in die years ahead. May I say to each of you, make life worth living for yourself by doing your part in making a better school, a better country, and a better world for those about you. — James P. Post 5 Board Of Education THE BOARD OF EDUCATION--Paul Koehn; Harold Clark; John Herbin, Celeste McComas, President; George Ganstrom, Vice President; Fritz Emery; Dr. Wm. C. Berner; Don Hutchinson. The Board Of Education of Unified Dis- trict 333 is to be congratulated for their outstanding contributions to not only the school system but also to the students, teachers, and community and for their hard work and dedication. Without their continual efforts for better education, CHS would not be the excellent, high- calibered high school that it is. 6 Guidance Counselors A familiar face at CHS is Mrs. Virginia Campbell. Mrs. Campbell, secretary to Mr. Musick, has worked at the high school for three years. Some of her various duties are typing the daily bulletin, answering the phone, sorting the mail, and signing excuses. Miss Martha Fyfe is the clerk for the Board of Education and also the secretary to Mr. Clark. One of her many jobs is to make out the teachers' checks at the end of each month. The school nurse for school district 333 is Mrs. Dorothy Stortz. Mrs. Stortz, who has been the school nurse for the past five years says her job is a very rewarding one. Mrs. Dorothy Green does various jobs wherever she is needed at the Board of Edu- cation Building. She has enjoyed her work very much in the one and one-half years she has worked there. Mrs. Mildred McFall who enjoys her job very much, is the Board of Education sec retary. Mrs. McFall has worked for the school for four and one-haIf years. 8 Faculty Inspires Students KERMIT MENZIES B. S. Emporia State; Physical Science; Physics. JOHN F. DAVIS M. S. The CHS regional squad had Susan Hattan - junior and Becky Bramwell -freshman as the negative team; and Dana Rasure - sophomore and Della Cyphers-junior on the affirmative team. No member of this year's squad is a senior, so a winning debate team will return to CHS next year. The CHS forensics squad attended tournaments in Salina, Wichita, McPherson, and Manhattan. Several students also attended the district tournament at Clay Center. Ten of these members received I ratings there, qualifying them for the state tournament at Emporia. They were: Dana Rasure--oration; Pam Wilson, Becky Bramwell, and Don Lambert-- readings; Nancy Kennedy--informative; Susan Hattan and Della Cyphers -- extemp; Gail Potter and Cheryl Saindon- -poetry; and Ann Beckman--prose. It received a gold star from the administration because of its activity in school affairs. The meetings were held every other Monday during homeroom. The members helped the teachers of CHS by grading papers, making tests, and student-teaching. In the middle of the second semester, F. T. A. spon- sored a Student-Teacher Day where the members taught classes of their choice. The different programs included having teachers speak on their experiences and seeing films. The whole club went to Chester, Nebraska for a dinner party the first semester. The sponsors were Mrs. John Davis and Mr. Marvin Dunlap. FTA Officers: BACK ROW : E. Post, Vice- President; A. During the season they com- piled a record of 16-5, broke 23 team and individual school records, and played an exciting, high-scoring brand of ball that brought full crowds to the CHS gymnasium. Rick Reeves received honorable mention All-State recognition, was a unanimous All-League and All-Area pick, and was a fierce competitor around the basket. Ron Green was a 2nd team All-League and honorable mention All-Area pick and led the team in most of the statistical categories. Bob Snyder was a big factor around the basket all season, Steve Collins used his speed and jumping ability to good advantage, and Price Pickard repeatedly got the Panthers started with his accurate jump-shots. Richard Clark was named the most inspirational play- er on the squad and the honorary captain, and was the true leader of the squad. Steve Townsend and Brice Leon both contributed greatly to several wins. This team will be remembered by many people for many different reasons, and the team itself can look back on 1967-68 as the year that they developed pride and started a winning tradition in basketball at CHS, one that will continue to grow with time. Reeves, S. Kagle, S. Hattan. Charles Aidman's adaptation of Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters was chosen as this year's all-school play production. It is a series of poems in which persons who lived in Spoon River, Illinois, speak from their graves, giving their thoughts on life, love, hate, loneliness, fear, joy, unhappiness, lost hope, and every other aspect of human life. Each member of the cast portrayed several characters; guitar music and singing were provided by Ann Doyen and Mark Reeves at various stages of the presentation to set the mood. In producing this play, the director and cast attempted to convey the feeling and meaning in life these persons had found too late. Al- though grieved by his untimely departure, the memory of him is kept precious by all his classmates and friends. JUST AWAY I cannot say and I will not say That he is dead--he is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand He has wandered into an unknown land. Mild and gentle as he was brave-- When the sweetest love of his life he gave, To simple things; where the violets grew Blue as the eyes they were likened to. Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of him still as the same I say: He is not dead--He is just away! - James Whitcomb Riley 103 Autographs 104 - i A T? « ♦ ' A , - 9 ' «r f , i •i V a ' - • - . • -V • fc 1 .+ . . - r -. 1 - •'. .%•? ..
