Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1967 volume:

The Days That Make Us Happy Foreword Contents The pages in this book tell the story of life at C. H. S. They tell of the days when friends meet and go to activities together and of the days when students emerge from the classrooms, bursting with the knowledge they have learned. By glancing through these pages you will lea rn how the days that make us happy make us wise. Administration Faculty Seniors Underclassmen Clubs Sports Student Life Junior High ADMINISTRATION AND __________ The Concordia Board of Educa- tion in 1931 provided for the in- scription of the following state- ments over the north and south doors to our high school building: To Per- petuate Learning For Our Children and The Days That Make Us Happy Make Us Wise. These concepts are as true today as they were in 1931. Each student who attends Concordia Senior High School has unlimited opportunity to achieve these goals if he or she only desires. 1 wish tocompliment the Hurkaru Staff and sponsor for the remarkable job of capturing and preserving for posterity many of the activities of the 1966-67 school year. It is further de- sired to express good fortune to all Concordia students in their quest for knowledge, continuing education, and happiness. Harold M. Clark Clark And Musick Head Administration It is a pleasure to be back in Con- cordia High as a part of the Panther aggregation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Panthers and the staff members for your coopera- tion in making this a successful home- coming year. I am looking forward to an even greater year for the Panthers in 1967-68. You students have a great life ahead of you if you prepare for it now. Yours is the Space Age. It is the era o f new frontiers with un - limited horizons. It will be what you are prepared to ma ke it. A secon- dary education today is not enough for you to meet the needs of tomorrow. So do your best to become educated and effective participants for the world of tomorrow. Today will be yesterday tomorrow, so don't wait-- start now. Spanish Club Operators Club This was the second year for the Spanish Club. Sponsored by Mrs. Davis, the club met twice monthly. Some of the activities included a Christmas Party and a going-away party for Sefior Noland, the former sponsor, who left CHS to join the Navy. The major accomplishment of the Club was the revision of its constitu- tion. Mr. Leon's Operators Club met every homeroom to learn more about projectors, sound equipment, and microphones. The Club helps with this audio- visual equipment anytime it is needed. The knowledge the students gained from this Club not only proved valu- able to CHS, but may be helpful to the students later. FT A Key Club This was FTA's first year at CHS, but the members were quite active. Each member was supposed to help a teacher so that he might receive insights into the teaching profession. This project proved quite successful, especially for those students who did actual teaching. The FTA also had a book sale and went to the FTA state convention at K-State. Following its moto, We Build, the Key Club had many projects. Some of the Club's activities included entering afloat in the American Leg- ion Parade; sponsoring the Faculty- Key Club basketball game; and having a n Information Guide Service at the State Music Festival. Also, it was an honor for Bob Snyder to win the Key Club lieutenant governorship. FHA Miss Boyd, Miss Dwerl- kotte, and the girls of FHA were kept busy this year. At the athletic events they were in charge of the ticket taking. Another money- making project was selling cookbooks. Such things as the annual Hayrack ride , the Skating Party, and the Annual Par- e nt - Daughter Banquet kept the FHA members active. Dillon, Lanoe, Hill, Davis, Hein- iger, Hopkins. ADVERTISING STAFF--Claudia Stinson, Janice Allen (Manager), Terry Bohling, and Lois Arnold prepare ads for an issue of the CHS PANTHER. PAGE EDITORS--Bufford Kitterman (Sports), Lyn- nette Larkins (News Editor), Patty Palmquist (Edito- rial Editor), and Connie Peck (Feature Editor) lay out their pages. Journalism Many long hours and hard work were given by the Journalism Class in order to publish the PANTHER every other week. The staff discovered that producing a newspaper involved more than just finding news. Producing attractive page layouts was stressed. Also the journalists worked on im- proving the paper's appearance by REPORTERS--Kay Brunell, Cynthia Brichalli, and Carol Meats check copy for the next issue of the pap- er. creating new and different ads. Not only did the class learn about letter -press printing by going on a field trip to the KANSAN, but theyalso learned about off-set printing. Although each issue of the PAN- THER was not without its problems, the class discovered that journalism can be fun as well as rewarding. I have been particularly proud of the band this year. To be a member of the CHS band is not easy; it demands much of the students time. There is much extra work at the beginning of the year when he is asked to rehearse every morning before school to meet our parade and show obli- gations. Following football season, emphasis is directed toward concerts and contest. Many stu- dents are asked to participate in stage band, pep band, wind ensemble, and small groups. I’ve felt that our students have accepted these tasks with diligence. Their efforts were in part rewarded by their earning fourteen first di- vision ratings at state contest this year. They have done a wonderful job all year long.” Robert Ensign - Director CHS Band. Greg Bryant; BASSES: Ray Nelson, Dave Mosher, Don Lambert. Dance Band BACK ROW: Mr. Ensign, L. Borsdorf, D. Other march- ing season events included Band Day on Oct. 15, followed by our own home- coming festivities on Oct. 21. During the football season, the band presented four halftime shows. The final event of the marching season was the Veterans' Day parade on Nov. 11. During the concert season the band presented the winter concert on Feb. 28. Prior to this time the Stage Band gave a benefit dance on Feb. 11. Another high- light was theN.C.L. League Band Clinic held at Abilene High School on Feb. 2. Six weeks after the winter concert, the band participated in the State Music Festival. The festival was on April 6 and 7. The band received a II rating, and fourteen soloists and ensembles re- ceived I division ratings. A week later the band began prepa - rations for the American Legion parade on April 15. The final concert of the season was presented on Sun., May 14. The Stage Band was also active dur- ing the spring, as they performed for the Junior College prom on April 22, and the Cawker City prom on April 29. The Stage Band also presented its annual show on May 9, with the theme Swingin' and Singin' '67. Singers BACK ROW: D. Ensign, D. Yamell, G. King, G. Lundberg, P. Post, J. Beckman, B. A Cappella Mr. Everett Miller, director of A Cappella Choir, considers his selection of Car- mina Burana by Carl Orff to be the Choir's major accomplishment during the 1966-67 school year. As activity periods on Tuesday's and Thursday's were not long enough to practice, sessions were held in the evening to make the Choir ready for tour, contest, and spring concert. The tedious hours spent rehearsing were rewarded at the State Music Festival with a I division rating. On December 19 the A Cappella Choir sang Christmas selections at the annual Christmas concert. February 15th the Choir traveled to Sacred Heart in Salina for the League vocal clinic which was directed by Elmer Copley, from Bethany College in Lindsborg. On April 12th the Choir loaded buses to go on tour. Although the day was dreary, the A Cappella Choir brightened the students' day in Clay Center, Miltonvale, Salina, Sacred Heart, and Minneapolis . The major portion of the program presented was Carmina Burana by Orff. Again in concert, on April 18th the A Cappella Choir presented a concert for the Public. The A Cappella Choir sang together for the last time at Commencement exer- cises, May 25. 2ND ROW: A. Doyen, P. Naylor, J. Hopkins, C. Reeves, D. Perry, D. Cox, N. Johnson. J. Kasl. D. En- sign, D.
