Yet, when it comes time for that well-deserved pat on the back, they are very often slighted. The administration has no easy task. Pres. Bredemeier, Dean Sohn, Mrs. Sohn, and Mrs. Holloway must both unite and work separately in their jobs as counselors, as confidants, as correc- tors, and as true friends of the stu- dent. Many of the problems and com- plaints they have to deal with are those of inexperienced and impulsive youth. Often we have disagreed with and even griped about the adminis- tration. Yet we must all agree that PRESIDENT BREDEMEIER we have presented many a problem Herbert G. Bredemeier, M.A., to them, and though their ideas and Indiana University opinions have sometimes differed from Religion ours, their goal and ours have been President of Concordia College the same: to promote and preserve “Chapel of the Air speaker Christian living Chairman of Central District Convention Committee “Member of Advisory Council of Board for Higher Education Member of Lutheran Hospital Nursing School Committee Assistant pastor, St. Peter's Lutheran Church This page sponsored by G. RICH IN GOOD DEEDS The theme of last fall’s Martha rally perfectly describes the Martha Society. For over 35 years these Good Samaritans have been active friends of the Concordia family. PRIMA To some of us the word Prima once connoted a seemingly unachievable height. As Sex- taners we looked forward to the day when we would be elevated to the class of Prima, and yet half-expected that this day would never come. To others of us this was only our second year away from home. To all of us Prima meant the end of our prep-school days and the begin- ning of our life’s work. This year was without a doubt the greatest of our years at Concordia. We have done everything from catching bugs to preaching in chapel ... everything from square dancing to dabbling in Shakespeare. True . . . we sometimes griped about the studies, the empty week- ends, the way things were run, and even the Fort Wayne weather. Nevertheless, we were al- ways proud to be members of the Concordia family. Our varied and enriching experiences here have indeed left an indelible imprint on our personalities and lives. Rather imposing terms we thought, and were proud to be called such. Those of us who had been here in high school were in our glory. We spoke with authority on the ages of the buildings, the campus, and the profs. We took delight in explaining our traditional nick-names for the faculty, where the locus could be found, and what.a 90% test consisted of. We who were new found a new world filled with friendly faces and hearty handshakes. Just when we were settling down to the rigors of college life, Homecoming was upon us. We discovered that, as Secundaners, we had a duty to perform: the bonfire. We learned what a railroad tie was, and, in doing so, our ties with each other were strengthened. We needed that strength, for, sooner than we expected, finals descended with all the sudden fury of a blitzkrieg. Most of us survived; some didn’t. Skating parties, square dances, smokers—all slipped by until we realized that we were at the end of our first year in college as members of the Concordia family. Dave Coleman Comptroller Dave Krampitz COLLEGE STUDENT ASSOCIATION At seven P.M. on the first Tuesday of every month, 204 became a busy center of activity. For in this spacious room on the second floor of Hanser Hall, a handful of conscientious mem- bers of the College Student Association met to discuss problems, choose committees, appro- priate money, and coordinate activities on campus. Among the new ideas introduced or endorsed by this year’s edition of the CSA were Bible Advance Week, the Anniversary Celebration of the Jubilarians, a standard system of voting, and the mid-term election of the CSA committees. Delegates were sent to two conventions. Veteran Art Constien and Phil Schroeder gained valuable experience and “train’-ing at the Lutheran Student Government Conference in Se- ward, Nebraska, and Louis Scholl and John Mennen were elected to spend part of their Eas- ter vacation representing Fort Wayne at the Synod-sponsored seminar in Washington, D. C. Each CSA meeting opened and closed with prayer, and Christian harmony prevailed as the Concordia family learned to govern itself. “All opposed .. .” qt This page sponsored by Fort Wayne Structural Steel Co., 4290 North Clinton Street and Goller’s Dry Cleaners, 608 E, Pontiac Left to right: Dave Schneider, Treasurer Bon- nie Campbell, Parke Frederick, Secretary Betty Abendroth, President Danny Thompson, Vice- President Dave Romberg, Marilyn Rittamel, John Mennen, and Mare Pietsch. Composed of ten students, two elected from each floor, this informal group talked over the problems that arose in the dorm. Their purpose was to promote clean and quiet living, better fellowship, and un- derstanding—especially of the rules. Often, in times of emergency, these mature thinkers were called upon to come up with an immediate solution, such as a light bulb, a fuse, a mop, or what have you. An important precedent was set the first semester: henceforth and hereafter every chairman of the Men’‘s Council automatically inherits the beloved and glorious title, “The Great White Father.” Second semester (front row, left to right): Roland Barkow, Dale Evanson, Don Emily, Chairman Kaye Don Hoogerhyde, Phil Stephan, and Secretary David Kurth; (back row, left to right): Hubert Rausch, Jim Schelling, Paul Geffert, and Dave Schneider. LOUNGE COMMITTEE Besides keeping the lounge spic and span, redecorating its entranceway, and making more recreational facilities available, this committee purchased and installed a 21” General Electric television set. From then on “the most comfortable room on the campus” not only attracted card sharks and college couples, but also armchair critics who sat for hours on end commenting about and watching such celebrities as Liberace, Ken Newendorp, and Ron Gersmehl. CONVOCATION COMMITTEE Sixteen convocations were arranged by this faculty-student coalition. World travelers, Shakespearean actors, a pantomimist, a humorist, a psychologist, and a variety of other enter- tainers were paraded past the critical eyes of the student body. From the standpoint of assemblies, this year has been beneficial, for when the Convoca- tion Committee went into action the periods were shortened, providing a few with sleep and many with experiences in Chapel and in the gym that will long be remembered. CHORALIERS 12:20 P.M.—Time to smoke up Nickie’s room and do a little harmonizing in the Maestro Gersmehl manner. ACAPPELLA CHOIR “A Mighty Fortress is Our God.” .. . With this stirring anthem the choir began each of the 28 concerts sung during its 17th annual season. Mr. Herbert Nuechterlein completed his third year as conductor, Prof. Eu- gene Nissen stepped into Prof. Elmer Foelber’s shoes as choir manager, and Marilyn Diemer and Virginia Sonne became five year veterans. The Canadian border was crossed, and “My Coun- try ‘Tis of Thee’ became “God Save Our Noble Queen.” Cecil and George were back again, providing “safe” trans- portation, as Cecil continued his perfect driving record. Parke Frederick furnished entertainment on the busses with his often played version of “Perfidia.” Mrs. Nuechterlein accompanied her husband on the trips, acting as a pre-concert critic and nursing sick singers back to health. Connie, the prexy, told stale after-dinner jokes, and did a wonderful job of being in the right place at the right time. “Sudsy” stayed up all night folding wrinkled programs by hand to save the choir $1.40, and lettered, white uniforms added class to the coffin bearers. GERMAN CLUB Once a month, in a secluded room on the second floor of Hanser Hall, the German Club gathered for a little entertainment in a manner reminiscent of the old country. These would-be Deutschers sought to recapture in play, song, and dance the for- eign folkways of their forefathers . . . making them foreign, at times, even to Dr. Meyer. As add- ed attractions there were educational German movies and refreshing American Cokes. HOBBY CLUB At sundry times and in divers places this intimate circle of amateur photographers, loaded down with cameras, tripods, and light meters, could be noticed tripping the light fantastic shutter. Then, after disappearing into the darkness of the Schick Hall basement, they would many hours later emerge triumphantly. During occasional huddles, these lovers of the lens aired their respective views concerning kodabromide, kodachrome, microdol, dectol, and photo-fix. Special regard should go to those unsung heroes who lost sleep and suffered nervous breakdowns producing pictures for the Concordian and the Maroon and White. SOCK AND BUSKIN 0ponning roman dress and converting the gym into a Roman amphitheater, these talented thespians took themselves and their audiences back 2000 years by presenting as their annual play an outstanding production of “The Robe.” Home-made and rented costumes, borrowed shower slippers, effective lighting, efficient staging, excellent acting, Dick Rasper’s after dinner speeches, and Prof. Bente’s patient directing all contributed to the success of this society. Rev. Sohn announced, Pres. Bredemeier preached, and the Chapel of the Air Choir sang forth under the direction of Mr. Nuechterlein. A silent but in- valuable service was rendered by Vernon Knight, the alert and efficient technician at the controls on Thursday, and sometimes Friday afternoons. Nestor Walzel in Brazil to help purchase a jeep, and to the educational fund of the Society for the Promotion of Mohammedan Missions. The Society's off campus acivities included teaching at the Allen County Children’s Home operating the radio station at the Veterans’ Hospital, assisting Rev. Services were held on the first day of May at her home church, St. Paul’s Lutheran of Valley City, Ohio. The Rev. Erwin Schnedler delivered the sermon at her me- morial service in chapel on the morning of May 7. Mary Louise was in her second year at Concordia, studyiing to be a teacher of the Word. She had been a member of both the A Cappella and Chapel of the Air Choirs. In memory of Mary Louise the College Student Association has set up a scholarship fund. “I have fought a good fight. | have finished my course, | have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness .. .” Il Timothy 4:7-8.
