HE. tall, slender, quickly moving figure of Dr. Thomas Burgess has been a familiar sight on the Concordia campus since 1926, but few have realized the extent of his influ- ence. Dr. Burgess, head of the Psychology Department, has brought much recognition to the college in academic circles and in sci- entific publications throughout America and even foreign countries. As guest lecturer, he has appeared before many professional societies and has traveled as far as the Universities of London and Hawaii. He is internationally known as the father of hypnodontiag his methods of hyp- nosis have been widely adopted by dental and medical professions. Always the name of Dr. Thomas Clen Burgess carries with it the name of Concordia College. We honor Dr. Burgess, not only for the Wheaton Academy Diploma .... 1914 Wheaton College, B.S .......... 1918 St. Olaf College, B.A. ........... 1922 University of Illinois, M .S. ....... 1923 University of Iowa, Ph.D. ....... 1926 University of Chicago. . .summer 1934 Dedication recognition he has brought our school but for his dedication to Concordia and her students. Many are the disturbed Cobbers who have found their ways to the sanctuary of his office to join the ranks of those who have come from the entire continent to find understand- ing and help for their minds and spirits. Dr. Burgess' broad interests and wide ex- periences as newsboy, painter, waiter, janitor, electrician, laboratory assistant, research ana- lyst, and principal of a Chinese school allow him to readily understand the problems of many different people. While the college family is proud of Dr. Burgess for his scholarship, his success as a clinical psychologist and as a pioneer in hypno-therapy, we admire him most for being a Christian gentleman who has given thirty- one years of service to Concordia College.
