Mem- ory by memory it had tilted further and further until now the handle had assumed an almost horizontal position — and I was getting wet! I sought shelter in nearby Bohm Hall. To save time I cut right across the lawn, and across a bare spot where no grass grew, a dia- gonal path, well worn by many feet, which proved that Prep School students still knew that a straight line was the shortest distance be- tween Bohm Hall and the Annabelle Diner, called the bean wagon, down the road in Waverley Square. Once inside, I began to dry off a bit. I entered a bare room with four steel beds, a dusty floor, and a green shade on the window. Then leaning against the dark wooden door, I tried for a moment to for- get the dust, the day, and the emptiness. And I think I almost chuckl- ed to myself when 1 remembered . . . 14
