requiescat in pace Our beloved Prof. J. E. Herzer was called to his eternal rest on the night of December 16, 1956. He was active and busy to the end; a seizure brought his rich and fruitful life to a sudden close. He was born August 26, 1880, at Plymouth, Wis¬ consin. Later he attended Walter College in St. Louis, Missouri, and Concordia College, Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1904 he graduated from Concordia Sem¬ inary, St. Louis, and thereupon served congregations at Dix and Durango, Colorado until 1911. From 1911 to 1913 he was Pastor at Vernon, B.C., serv¬ ing at the same time a large mission field in British Columbia. During the next sixteen years, until 1929, he was pastor of Jehovah congregation in Calgary. From 1929 to 1942 his activities extend¬ ed over a wider field as immigrant missionary and organizer for Young People ' s work in Western Canada with headquarters in Winnipeg. From 1943 to his end he served as instructor in Religion and German at Concordia College. Pastor Herzer was one of the truly great gifts which the Saviour gave our Church in West¬ ern Canada over a period of 45 years - during the time when foundations were laid for a strong Lutheran Church. He was an exemplary, polished, Christian gentleman, a striking model of Christian humility, endowed with an ever friendly disposition and with sanctified sound judg¬ ment and common sense. Throughout his entire life he made a thorough and systematic study of the Bible-the joy of his life; and the knowledge which he had of the Old Testament as well as the new Testament was amazing. This knowledge he used constantly for the benefit of his fellowman. Whenever he began to expound Scripture, the people understood; and the laymen throughout Western Canada, the young people, our Concordia students, our teachers, our pastors - they all heard him gladly. At the same time they saw in him an unflinching and stalwart defender of the faith. He abhorred even the slightest drifting away from Scripture; under no condition was he willing to compromise any part of the Biblical Truth. Our Lord used this serv¬ ant mightily to edify, to build up His Church in the Canadian West. Through him He led streams of blessings into the homes of our pastors, into the congregations, into our young people ' s groups, and particularly during the last thirteen years into our college. Indeed he was a prince in Israel, in whom there was no guile. We shall greatly remember this noble soul and follow his faith. It was our Lord Jesus who gave us this truly great teacher. Unto Him be blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, forever and ever. A. H. Schwermann. 367 1 ) 133 oC - John E. Herzer 1880 - 1956 2
