There are those of you who with these memories will walk from the doors of Concord High School into the dreams, hopes, and ambitions of a new world, and there, again, are those who are still to spend one, or two, or more years of your lives in the halls of C.H.S., warmed by the laughter of classmates. We are all aware that the memory of this year of happiness will be outstanding in our future years. The Spider Web staff now presents to you with a friendly hand this 1953 issue of THE SPIDER WEB to keep the joys of this unforget- table year fresh in your mind. D 1, My . First we have Mrs. Lucille How- ardls English students showing their book reports. Next we have Miss Ruby Swisher teaching her Eng- lish class to be serious while speaking before a group. It looks as if it is a lost cause with Hal Furr. Et tu Brute! Barbara Small, Ralph Wallace, and Carolyn Denny are showing Miss Lillian Stewart's Latin Class that all Gaul is divided into three parts. Is all the world a stage? Don Roberts and Barbara Furr are trying to prove it to Miss Hildreth Gabriel's English class. Last but not least, we have Mrs. Verne Quay's English class. Joann, Sylvia, and Betty have taken the reins and are teaching the class about American authors. It looks like they are very inter- ested. in. Here are some informal shots from the science de- partment, the library, and study hall. By the way, whom are they trying to fool? Studying in study hall? In the nekt picture a salesman is demonstrating a projector to Mrs. Fisher and Mr. Glenn. I wonder what that gadget is. Itchy really knows how to use the library! These general science students seem to be having quite an experiment. This may be a world shattering event. In the last picture Mrs. Bost is lecturing on biology, but Larry seems inte ested in 4 rl something else. 7 f'i'wM if My 6, ' 'N' f 'V' i f f J, ,If Dr Zo ,ff ,ov ff' 'H' -wi ,j W' lg V f ,ul L9 ff gr . g... ,, 1 all yy ky, ,ff l, g.1,N.A u.46i'4grMJ-fn! If they ,got too smart, they could be dangerous, An art class, and look at the diligent students. They really seem to be concen- trating on their work, Uh-oh! Do you think these girls will ever learn to cook? I really hope so! Doro- thy Barr seems to be working very hard at trying to follow Mrs. Bulla's instructions. Hard at work are these typing students under Mrs. Weddington's watchful eyes. Poor Mr. Black! If he is able to teach john, Don, and Monty anything, boy, is he good! I think the idea is to saw the board in half. That seems easy enough. me M-...,,,,-M .iff af Pictures from the math and physical education departments, and the teacher's lounge. Mrs. Alston is teaching her higher algebra class that logarithms are very easy. Larry, Creighton, and Betty don't think so. lt is 1:10, and Miss Blanche, Mrs. Howard, and Miss Lillian are resting before their next classes. Crack! Mr. Wilson is teaching his physical education class that it is easy to make a wrestling takedown. Poor ole Bill is the unlucky victim. And now there is an explanation of a rectangular solid in Mrs. Walker's eighth grade math. Mary Brantley explains how to make a graph in Mrs. Holshouser's algebra class. ,. 32 if ga! f4siz3LxfS ,pta sv .agp if Riga .gal affgs-,gf I0 viffll 6 J, . 4,,. ,nnf 0 K xi Llc!! f f ,-rf: , ' , , u , ,.-., R 4 5' 'Ni J ,V 7 A-aff ' l I ly: rlygalr' D, I.:-1 .. 1 ,,- f 4 .7 , I 4, vc' C - if - W Plfxhf-ff I I 4 3 s 1 urn! Except for the left tackle position, a new team had to be trained and developed. Due to injuries, inexperience, and bad breaks, the Spiders had a bad season. They played hard, but there was definitely something missing. No one person can be blamed for a bad season. The team lost as a whole. It is wise to leave it that way. Overshadowed by a bad season, Roy Thomas was one of the most under-rated players in the state. He was always outstanding on both offense and de- fense and was admired and respected by opposing coaches and teams alike. Being recognized as Con- cord's most valuable player was only meager tribute to one of the best fif not the bestj lineman in the history of Concord High. The Concord High School Spiders under Coach Floyd Wilson may not have had the most successful year in their history, but is was not the most unsuccessful season either. The Spiders had more of a umediocrel' year. The boys finished the season with a record of 5 wins and 15 losses in all games played and a conference game record of 4 wins and 9 losses. ' The Spiders had no individual star, but a well-balanced team that is looking forward much more to the future than to the past or present. Coach Wilson feels that the returning Spiders, along with the experienced boys of this year's BU team, will put up a strong fight for the South Piedmont Conference championship by next season. Coach Wilson said that he didn't have a first team, but the usual starters for the Spiders were Lancaster and Walker at forwards, Robinson or Burris at center, and Snuggs and McEachern, or Eudy and Hammett at guards. 1 95 3 SCOREBOARD Concord ,....,... .... 3 4 East High Concord .,..,.. ......
