STANDING Coach [ Anticipating an excellent season. Concord High's Varsity Football Team had somewhat of a disappointing one when the team finished with an odd 3-4-3 record. Their 2-2-3 league record was good enough for fourth place in the DVAL. The Green Machine got off to a good start by winning their non-league opener over Terra Linda 18-7. But the Minutemen had their problems the next two games, losing 10-0 to Kennedy of Richmond and 21-14 to St. Ignatious of San Francisco. In their league opener, the Green Machine pulled an 11-8 victory over Pleasant Hill. The game was climaxed by Mark Oliver's field goal in the closing seconds of the game. In the next game the Minutemen lost to a powerful Antioch team 31-6. After that, they played an excellent game against College Park, but had to settle for a 6-6 tie. The following Friday night the Minutemen faltered losing to Clayton Valley 29-20. After that the Green Machine came up with an upset tie with Ygnacio Valley 14-14 and another tie with Pittsburg 20-20. The Minutemen came on strong in the last game to defeat Mt. Diablo 20-15 on a muddy field. Head coach this year was Frank Aiello, and his assistants were Coach Dave Clark and Coach Charlie Jones.
