Der Deutsche Verein (dair doy-tcha fair-ine) of CHS began the 1973-1974 year with small numbers but ended with big results. The club's first event of the year was participating at the YVHS Oktoberfest on October 20. The club's main contribution to the festival was a continuation of last year's Cafe 'zum Nussbaum (Cafe' by the Walnut Trees), with a booth and the main pretzel-concession. Later, the profits helped finance a dinner party for the members and a spring festival in which all the language clubs participated together. The word for CHS' German Club in 1973-1974 was ... With a President, Vice-President, two assistants, and twelve members of the Advisory Board, working hard they tried to solve the school's problems and bringing out new activities. One of their projects was the boost of Activity Cards. They offered each class prizes for those who bought them. The Student Government helped support Mr. Thall's Horticulture class by providing funds for plants. Some members attended the Junior States Convention in Sacramento. The students went to seminars and learned about fund raising ideas. They went to one seminar about student apathy, but the speakers didn't show up. Concord High's Varsity Tennis team did well by taking fourth place in the D.V.A.L. with an 8-5-1 record. The big asset was the new rule that girls can compete in boys athletics. Sophomore Kim Catrow and senior Rosanna Diaz showed their interest by coming out and did quite well by being numbers 3 and 4 on the team. The other strength in the team was the two returning members, number 1 Tom Candiotti and number 2 Pete Sciarretta. Both seniors compiled good records this year. Tom was most valuable player and Pete was team captain. Coach Bernie Llacuna is looking for strong teams the next few years because of the depth in sophomores and freshmen. Coach Ron Stafford pointed out running back Troy Brunty as the finest frosh back in the league and he proved it by gaining over eleven hundred yards. STANDING Coach [ Anticipating an excellent season. Concord High's Varsity Football Team had somewhat of a disappointing one when the team finished with an odd 3-4-3 record. Their 2-2-3 league record was good enough for fourth place in the DVAL. The Green Machine got off to a good start by winning their non-league opener over Terra Linda 18-7. But the Minutemen had their problems the next two games, losing 10-0 to Kennedy of Richmond and 21-14 to St. Ignatious of San Francisco. In their league opener, the Green Machine pulled an 11-8 victory over Pleasant Hill. The game was climaxed by Mark Oliver's field goal in the closing seconds of the game. In the next game the Minutemen lost to a powerful Antioch team 31-6. After that, they played an excellent game against College Park, but had to settle for a 6-6 tie. The following Friday night the Minutemen faltered losing to Clayton Valley 29-20. After that the Green Machine came up with an upset tie with Ygnacio Valley 14-14 and another tie with Pittsburg 20-20. The Minutemen came on strong in the last game to defeat Mt. The day before the league matches started, the team suffered two serious injuries in practice to two of their best wrestlers. One was 154 lb. Dave Gonzales, who would have been a league champion in Coach Carrier's opinion. Concord sent one of the strongest teams into the D.V.A.L. Tourney, with 9 seeded wrestlers and 8 of those 9 were seeded no. 1 or no. 2 in their weight classes. The 74 team gave Coach Don Carrier his 100th dual meet win in the D.V.A.L., THE FIRST D.V.A.L. Before I understand the games I'm playing (Red Rover, Red Rover-did you ever come over?) I'm turned around, twisted around, and there are other games to learn. All my childhood dreams have gone for nothing more than a vague swirl of confusion and I long to wade, once more, in the rainy street gutters and wash away the ashes, ashes... Talent 223 Mike Hurwitz 224Aalent To which purpose do I belong? Is life my destiny or is it a position I hold during this moment. Quiet shall break our silence and laughter shall again be heard. Life is a tool which we use during time's destiny. I am life, for I have lived and will live again. This world is a part of me for I have recognized it in it's suffering and in it's love. Anne Bradley Talent 225 Mike Hurwitz Dreams may live or dreams may die, but when they are lost we mustn't cry. It hurts when something dies, something close and dear to you and unreality may cover truth. But still we must dream. Cherish and hold fast to your dreams, For a plant deprived sunlight must die leaving you to wander in a dry barren desert, without food or water only parched, lifeless dust. 226 Talent Vickie Nunes Craig Gates The Rain Child When time was not, the Rain Child was, (Watch, for the Rain Child) Of the wind and the mist, in the cradle of dawn. (with arms uplifted,) She rises in a silence, both fleeting and long, (the rain streaming down,) To greet a light she can never meet. (steps hesitating in front of the cold.) And thus, in grief, the Rain Child treads, (Watch, but she'll never see,) Finding gentle joy. . . and despair, (For the Rain Child has no eyes to perceive.) in winter's night rain. Tina Krause Rob McWilliams The music of silence fills my head with overwhelming sensation. My heart beats a steady rhythm and my thoughts a delicate harmony. The leaves rustling above my head make me feel I am one with nature, myself. My thoughts no longer seem like recordings I play over and over. My thoughts are my feeling therefore my being. Chris Banducci Debbie Lane 230 Talent Rob McWilliams Looking back . . . all my life I have struggled to be an individual, and to what avail? i Vhat proof is there of my existance... who has witnessed my being? Depression covers the mind ike a thick fog, leaving 10 room for escape... jntil the sun melts it.
