Since that time we have come a long way and proved our worth in many fields. On hand to greet us as we wended our way up the wide stone steps of Concord High School, was Mr. Chamberlain. With his jovial smile he started us on our career. No sooner had we organized ourselves than Bob Blood came to us to announce the fall of the Student Association and the rebirth of the Student Council. Within a few weeks this was accomplished and stu- dent activities were running smoothly. We survived the wintry blasts of '38 and watched the band and choir trek to Worcester to bring back one ratings from the New Eng- land Festival. All of a sudden, appearing from nowhere, came a huge donation from the citizens of Concord, and We again bade the band farewell, for they were off to the World's Fair. Presently Mr. Chamberlain left for New York State and Mr. Reed was installed as Headmaster with Mr. Bourne taking over Mr. Reed's former duties as Submaster. With the beginning of our Iunior year, we noticed many more changes in the teaching staff. Miss Frost, a Home Economics teacher, arrived to take Miss Knox's place, Miss Smith came with the resignation of our librarian, Miss Killeen, Mrs. Bidwell took Miss Rowe's position as Dean of Girls, and Miss Whiting came in Miss Hamlin's place to teach art. Much to our sorrow, Mr. Collins, our financial adviser, left us, but we were very fortunate in having Mr. Waldron on the teaching staff, for he immediately took over Mr. Col- lins' former duties. Again we stop a moment to mention the superior work the band and choir accomplished at the New England Festival in Lawrence, Mass. Before we realized it, our junior year was over and the School closed for the summer months. ln the fall we again greeted two new members of the teaching staff, Mr. Miller, who joined the Department of English, and Miss Horace, who joined the Commercial Department. It was during this fall that Coach Grover put forth a championship football team, that was spurred on by the introduction of night games. lncidentally, this did the gate receipts no harm. It is also worth men- tioning that the band gave some spectacular performances at these night games. We have come to the end of three eventful years in Concord High Schoolg may the students who follow us have as many happy days as we have enjoyed. 5 jiraf .Jqonor DUDLEY FRASIER LENNART SANDQUIST .gzconcf ,AIIUVLOP IEAN VAN DE BOGABT cfm Ummm PRESIDENT: Lauren Howard VICE-PRESIDENT: Rocco Raduazo SECRETARY: David Wood TREASURER: Dorothy Stacy dal' EOL gd! It has introduced student control of study halls, sponsored auctions twice a Week in the spring, and taken charge ot the Alumni Dance, which was a great success. lt has proved itself a very helpful part of the general school program, and has given the students a voice in their own government. Wafiona! .Manor .gbciefg PRESIDENT: RICHARD STRIPP Five years ago the Concord Chapter of the National Honor Society was formed. The meetings are held during school time or in the evening. Members of the society are chosen biannually by a committee of the faculty. The group is made up largely of Seniors with a few Iuniors to form a nucleus for the following year. Members are chosen for their character, scholarship, leadership, and service and continued membership depends on these qualities. The emblem is the keystone and the torch. omior QU! 6055 CHAIRMAN: MILDRED PEASLEE The American Iunior Red Cross of Concord High School has willingly taken part in all Red Cross activities this year. For the warring countries it has made three afghans, bandages, baby layettes, and knitted articles, it has given money, raised by sponsoring a puppet show in November and other activities throughout the year, all of which has gone to the refugee chil- dren. On the home front it has given money for glasses for Worthy students and bought mittens and other Wearing apparel for needy children under the guidance of the City Welfare Agency. Collaborating with the Girls' Club it entertained the Franklin Orphans' Home, as usual, and continued its magazine services for the various hospitals and other local institutions. legafing PRESIDENT: IOHN FOSTER The Debating Club is one of the most enthusiastic clubs in the school. It is comprised of about twenty active members who have, as a unit, carried on such projects as the auctions, and inter-class debates. The Club meets every Thursday morn- ing and has featured some very spirited debates on national as well as international problems. The primary purpose of the Debating Club is to give its members a feeling of confidence and ease While speaking before a group. This purpose has been successfully accomplished. 64... pf., Presented March 27-28 THE GOCD EGG By Robert C. Finally, after innumerable trials, Filling his laboratory damp Stood Milliken's Panoramic Projection Lamp. Completed in Iune of '61, lts mate can be found nowhere under the sun. It can show for its master, whenever he wants, The world in reviewg old familiar haunts. The dials are marked with numerous things And from country to country, as if on wings, Can take the Professor, who from his lair Can see and hear as if he were there. The machine stands ready and rarin' to go, Wires by the thousands set just so And watched by the spiders, his sole confidants, The Professor approaches with nonchalance. T. XI If C 1 V f f f F- His eyes are shut-using hit or miss.- His hand hits on a knobp and with tearful hiss The thing starts in motion, raising the roof with its great commotion, Simultaneously nine bells clang, and suddenly-a fearful bang! Boop, dum-dum, boop, dum-dum, boop -carols the calliope of Miss Kay Naramore, seated at her place in the huge tent of the Warren Harris Circus, when she is suddenly forced to end her worthy selection by a shrill whistle blast from that suave master of ceremonies, Prank Lanza, about to introduce Iohn and Harry Walters, the only trapeze performers who have had a command performance before the nation's President, Miss Beverly Hutchins, responsible for the free manicure booths seen on the corners of every American city. The star of the circus, Mlle. Ioan Stewart, is next on this varied program, flashing dimpling smiles as she trips lightly through her tightrope routine. Dashing into the ring on milk-white horses the daring bareback riders, Arlene and Alta Dickerson, live up to all expectations. Shirley Iesseman and Robert Stubbs helpfully toss the girls hoops through which they jump from one horse to another. Throughout their stellar performance, Chellis Call and Richard Mobbs drift through the crowds hawking peanuts, popcorn and quantities of gum which they buy wholesale from a Chichester grocery store. Chellis is calling, Buy some gum, friends! One good chew deserves another! A casual iaunt about the grounds reveals many other interesting things. Harlan Besse, clarnorous barker, allows noth- ing to go unseen, calling attention to Iohn Chamberlin and Ernest Pierce, strong men, snapping 100-pound weights in pieces, rolling them into iron cannon balls, and using them for tennis. Irene fa Dale makes a strong bid for acclaim with her remarkable 3 V A demonstration of sword swallowing. To the questions of Xi V reporter Lawrence Turcotte, Miss Dale answers calmly, It's ST R -sc MA all in knowing how! A shrill cry brings us at a run to , b- the tent of Iosephine Mercer, a free lance flea tamer, thrill- l Q2 AQ ing thousands daily with her flea obedience class. Miss WHY!! C6 7 2 Mercer is also a noted author, the best known of her work 525 253 being The Psychology of the Flea or How to Win Fleas F13 X and Lose Friends. Her able assistant is lane Taylor, the fleas' wardrobe mistress. A glaring sign invites one and all to see Elva Gordon's lion taming act. Elva con- fides that her own roar so terrifies her playmates that she easily controls them. In a corner of the same tent we find Iosephine Toohey busily reading the future in her tea-leaves and Iulie Alarie taming ten-foot cobras with mournful wails on her violin. The snakes squirm. As we near the exit, Claire and Edwin Begin draw our last sighs of admiration with their juggling act fafhangover from C. H. Robert Ordway aboard his million-dollar yacht, the made his money in spongesl sits listening to the strains of Nevers Band floating over his radio, a band now of national fame in which Ellen Rice is solo clarinetist. Over in Switzerland, Marion Benson is breaking all records-and many little pine trees-for mountain climbing on skiis. She gives all credit for her accomplishment to David Dunlap whose International Ski School at Epsom has turned out - --es... 4 - many such artists. Pauline Ricker and Shirley Darrah have Lrg C Afszmg ' Fifiifiicg -s 'Lp- just taken over Chicago's doll house, in which they hope to install Concord High Schoo1's famous honor system or at least a reasonable facsimile. The fabulously wealthy Rocco Raduazo has just sold his munitions factory and is buying controlling interest in the Henniker Hoopsters whose guiding spirit is john Buchanan. But Harry Farnham, water boy, is still the real boss, guns or no guns. Lawrence Eastman raises the country's prize parsnips and sends the best straight to Betty Duncan's Health Farm. Barbara iff' .37 5 johnson and Gloria jones were so exhausted by Miss Z F Duncan's course that they left for Africa where rumor has them prospecting for gold. Francis Hall, Leonard A 'Q Hill, and Raymond Hillsgrove have officially hung out their shingle as song writers- Hill, Hall, and Hillsgrove. We write 'Em and you Sing 'Em, or Else! Needless to say, they are doing famously. As premiere danseuse of the Ballet Russe, Mlle. Maria Frye is knocking them in the aisles so much so that nurses Mary Beckett and Laura Maltais are always on hand with smelling salts at one of La Frye's perform- ances. Phyllis Morgan and Arlene Bailey have just organized Local No. 13 of the Amalgamated Buswomen's Union. Miss Morgan runs the hourly Bow-to-Concord line while Miss Bailey acts in a similar capacity on the Chichester Transit. Also, in Chichester we find Ethel Smith, full time operator at the Chichester Telephone Exchange. Ethel says, It does keep one abreast of the times. Mario Sartorelli is the recent author of that widely read article, Spaghetti Culture--Its Ups and Downs. And now the Professor's mind does stray To the glamorous dens where city folk play, And stretching his hand to the proper dial He turns it on with cr wistful smile. The strains of Thurston Carpenter's All-Star Dance Band delight the ears of all patrons of the Purple Petunia, New York's best night club, fno cover chargel. Among the numerous attractions are the drum solos of Big Gim E5 Greeley and the tricky tap routines of Annette Di Biase I and Harriet Dirth. But the greatest thrill of all comes I 9 when the lights are dimmed and the purple spotlight E5 . X, , X turned on Henrietta Farrand reclining under an arti- PFEB ll ll ficial palm tree fguitar, sarong, et all crooning sweet tunes. Even Ianis Powers, the Club's cigarette girl, stops work during Henrietta's selections. The club's able corps of bouncers, Markos Marius, lohn Wilcox and Christopher Stevens, are always on guard for disturbances which never come. Basil Makris has become head waiter and in spite of countless offers of other positions, stays on at the Purple Petunia. An opening night at the Metro- politan Opera is always a glittering affair, but when Merrick Danforth and Barbara Dunstane are both starring in Iohn Wescott's latest opera, La Belle Begonia, the performance is quite naturally extra special. The credit for bringing this unbeatable combination about must go to Mary Fair, the Metropolitan's slightly radical press agent, who in turn confesses she would be lost , without her super-efficient assistant, Kathryn Drew. Lennart Sandquist, . I the Met's great voice teacher, put the stars through weeks of torturing ,fowf practice before the zero hour, but his work was well rewarded. The only . ,,, l , fe , f ff J hitch in the whole evening was the noticeable flutter caused by Andrew Wright, conductor, when he threw a chair at Pauline Pilsbury, whose sonorous bassoon playing had drowned out all other instruments in the second act. Ada Neil, head usher, tells us that she saw Virginia Swain in the center of the Diamond Horseshoe, glittering from every pore. Chris- tine Glines, officiating in the air-conditioned, plush-lined ticket office, reports a record box-office sale and Iohn Wilson, curtain tender for ten years, says that his hands were so sore from yanking up the curtain for curtain calls that he had to report for first-aid treatment as soon as he was off duty. Robert Byron, ranking Broadway's leading playwright and producer, insists that no one but Dorothy Stacy and Frederick Ordway star in his plays. But still the nation's talent is being lured to Hollywood, where we find Norval Lewis directing the film version of his brother Ward's sensational thriller, The Ghost Returns or Bring 'Em Back Dead or You'll Wish You Had. Frank Potter's novel is next in line for production, and as Frank has the say in Hollywood, he has forced Marjorie Sherburne to cash in her golden locks for a brunette wig before she can play the lead. Frank pro- fesses to be allergic to blondes still. William Dane, heart-flutterer and matinee idol of the millions, is to play opposite Miss Sherburne. Betty Hilliard is making a hit in all the musicals and experts say she is the only reason for Fred Astaire's lasting popularity. Margaret Aranosian and Patricia Noonan have recently combined their beauty establishments and Miss Aranosian has finally renounced natural curl-tonics for Norma SWain's new permanent wave machine which is being completely in- stalled. ln the laboratory of this new establishment, Mary Gaudreau works night and day, cooking up exotic nail polishes for the well-dressed women. Barbara Phil- brick and Reina Mayo will allow no one but Mary to design their nails. Both are suc- cessful film producers in their own right. In the same establishment we find Frances Corley having the dimple removed from her nose. Harlan Noyes is l-lollywood's most popular architect and prominent among his houses is that of Muriel Chesley, who has succeeded Adrian as leading dress designer. Iohn Carey with his har- monica band has arrived in town and is giving the West Coast a taste of real music. Charles Keaton's animated cartoon masterpiece, I-Iarrendiaf' has the world gasping in amazement. But Henry Burney has all Hollywood at his feet. Millions call him Z r Casanova Perhaps 'tis a pang of nostalgic yearning That makes the Professor with all his learning Next put out his hand to loh, yes, you can guessl The dial marked plainly with C. H. S, Lance Sweeney has taken over the high school's commercial department and has complete authority over everyone except David Wells, who is in charge of all ticket-selling drives. Under David's direction everyone in the school sold 100 tickets last fall and the High School has built a stadium where Ernest King's football team thrills New England fans. David Moody presides over the chemistry department- juggling nitric acid bottles with utmost ease. Carlene Brown acts as his able assistant-much to her own profound surprise. Barbara Chase officiates in the Latin room keeping her trusty Trots , .-g. 1,, . M13 222 H0 under lock and key. Arlene Farwell has finally become - librarian and is very obliging about giving out library ' 2 slips if one produces the right references. Also, in the W commercial department we find Doris Bolduc working toward a goal of 60 words a second for all typists who are fortunate enough to come under her authority. The blame for this goes to Beverly Merrill, whose typing demonstration in the auditorium amazed her audience. From the roof over the physics laboratory Iohn Foster sends down daily weather reports. Down in the girls' gym, Selma Harnmar and june Hillsgrove turn out prize-winning teams yearly. Merle Fottler, who recently was chosen America's Best Little Home- maker, fills the halls with delicious odors from the home economics rooms. joseph Annicchiarico, music instructor, is justly proud of his musical organizations and es- pecially of his new department, a course of instruction for drum majorettes, coached by Marjorie Matson, holder of several national titles. Leaving the building we found Shirley Wilson, a lone little figure waiting patiently for Rickey Horner to drive up with the Dunbarton bus, now twenty years late! Down in the city, are jean Hyland and Fernande Veilleux supervising Concord's Girl Scout activities, and Thomas Sutton as director of the Y. M. C. A. which now boasts a swimming pool. Milton Strom is still the Y's jack of all trades. jean Van de Bogart, principal of Iunior High School, is at present agitating for a two-hour school day. Anatole Desmarais, Maurice West, and Richard Whipple are owners of the Dunbarton Gazette which is delivered by carrier pigeons. Grace Mack and janet Smith contribute daily their nationally read column in which they sum up the day's news in one word, the same word every day-repulsive. Tired of restriction, we can tell at a glance, The Professor turns all of the dials by chance, The crash is tremendous, the bright sparks prolific: The results that he gets are simply terrific. Elaine and Robert Mailhot have recently opened a super-department store, whose sign reads- Mailhot and Mailhot-What We Ain't Got, You Don't Want, See!
