We visualized a new building and have seen it grow from a pile of steel and bricks to an impressive structure. We watched the progress carefully and waited impatiently for each step of construction to be completed. We have been well rewarded for our interest, for we can look at our school with pride. Yes, the new is but the old come true and in the following pages of this, the 1956 Con- cordian, we have recorded both old and new for you. 2 The 1956 CONCORDIAN Presented by the Journalism Class on the occasion of the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of Concord High School Elkhart, Indiana Vol. XXV Donella Whitsler Beverly Shepherd Editorin-chief Business Manager 3 ERNEST MILLER Q DEDICATION The new is but the old come true, and we have gained a prin- cipal new to the high school, but familiar to the school system. We have also gained a friend and advisor, never too busy to give sympa- thetic understanding to our problems, large or small. To express the gratitude and appreciation we feel in our hearts, we respectfully ded- icate this, the 1956 Concordian, to Ernest Miller. TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION ......... . . SENIORS The Class of 1956 has made more than its share of history during its four years at Concord High School. They initiated the project of selling stationery as freshmen. With Mr. Gwaltney again as sponsor, they sold concessions at the home basketball games, as their sophomore project. As juniors, with a new sponsor, Mr. Kreider, they set a new record of 54,196 in their magazine campaign, with Tonda Stoner and David Kreider as high salesmen. The auditorium was filled for two performances of the play, Love is in the Air. The year was topped by a never-to-be-forgotten junior- senior banquet. To lead them in the year of years, they again chose Mr. Kreider as sponsor and Robert Lovejoy as president. The class set records for scholastic achieve- ment and for being Concord's largest graduating class. The class of 1956 chose ROBERT EARL LOVEJOY Bob Reason and judgment are the qualities of a leader. You will find Roger Warstler and Don Rinehart in ink-stained aprons, running the mimeograph, and Nila Stealy and Anita Hoffman bent over the mimeoscopes. Tom Clark roams the campus with abox of flash bulbs in his pocket and the camera in his hand. David Kreider, with a pencil behind his ear, makes assignments, and Donella Whitsler worries over annual pages. It is in the press room that the reporters begin and end their search for gossip. Beverly Shepherd collects her stencil and begins work, Gene Cook, Gerald Hartman, Herbert Kirts, and Bill Goldy keep their cars in readiness for a dash after ads or pictures. Tonda Stoner and Shirley Hammon type the stencils, stopping only to reach for the familiar blue bottle of correction fluid, Janis White tries to find a word rhyming with hand for one of her poems. Gwen Kauffman, Mary Moore, Paulette Cramer, and Peggy Kehr gather around the assignment sheet while Frank Booth, Bruce Carlson, Doyle Martin, and Bill Theile struggle in getting their articles on squares. Walter Chaffee, Keith Stickel, Wayne Parcell and Ronnie Steele try to decide what to write about. Marilyn Novotny does the difficult assignments as Jim Wolfe and Orin Kilmer thumb through the dictionary hunting in vain for a word they can't spell, while Mrs. Healey surveys it all with a we'll-never- make-the-deadline expression. The assignments and worry are well mingled with fun. In the press room friendships are made, cokes are smuggled, and chatter flows freely over the clicking of the typewriters and the humming of the electric mimeogr aph. In the New Paris game fbelowj our team sported new striped basketball trunks much like those wom by the Harlem Globetrotters and against the Cubs they play- ed like pros to win 66'-45.
