41 , LlfV SO 1 To every thing there is a season, . . still ending, and beginning still . . 2 Let a man take time enough for the most trivial deeds . . . - • 4 jfiJK 4F %d3m : So soon, too soon, warmth is poised to wander, within this walking are many things I would rather not do till tomorrow. Already there has been dew so white, to whisper “frost” for rough life and rough play as if this were the time to squeeze living into a few more sunlocked days. (But there are no other young things, there are no young things, ithere are no young.) Is there time to be worn as a stream smoothed stone? Is it time to let time slip away Is there time? Do I still have time to turn myself into a stone? The ground is thinly covered and though, as if this were the time K% ' % . i-t - - Rapping the ground with my walking stick everything below the surface feels closed. Every inner thing has fallen asleep, a, ... or has been borne away by stronger wings. And I must look for that road star in the gloaming, to tell me its time to ittgfflyny way, that Orion will be leaping intq midninght view, so do our minutes This is not the end It is not even the beginning of the end. . . . But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. 6 Most of you are aware that the Pine Tree has been dead for the last two years. We have attempted to revive the Pine Tree because of its great value to this institution. A yearbook is valuable in that it is a vital link connecting each year to the past one. It also plays an important role in public relations, showing a neatly packaged view of our college. Finally and most importantly, this yearbook will be the only permanent written history of Concord College for the 1976-77 academic year. I am sure there are things you won’t forget about your college days. There may be a face or walk you try to recall. When memory fails, there will be the Pine Tree 1977. Pam Jarrell Editor History, whether written or pictoral, has the intention of providing a means of rec¬ ollection. Such a history is necessarily concerned with the prominent people and events that colored the year. But it is often the case that the things we wish to recall years later are not only the obvious prominent ones, but the less public and more meaningful friends we shared. We feel that we have included a good blend of both, giving an accurate picture of the year. His giving us access to files of public relation pictures saved us many times from disaster. We’d also like to express our appreciation to Dr. Ofsa and Miss Scott for being the advisors of an organization that has had many problems getting back on its feet. Miss Margaret Scott Dr. Bill Ofsa 10 k ADMINISTRATION M.N. Freeman A Message From Our President I am honored to have assumed the Presidency of Concord College in May of 1976. Concord is an excellent college with a proud heritage of providing quality higher education for many generations of West Virginia citizens. A vast majority of our students are serious in their pursuit of higher educa¬ tion under the direction of a dedicated and well-qualified faculty. I am particularly pleased that the coordinated efforts of students, faculty, and administration have made possible the production of this issue of the Pine Tree, the first in several years. It is my hope that continued dedicated efforts of the Pine Tree staff, their advisors, and the Publications Board will result in continuous annual publication of a yearbook which will ap¬ propriately reflect Concord College and its people. We have an excellent story to tell! 12 ’ Richard Reece—Financial Aid Milton Edge—Vice-President and Academic Dean Dale Dickens—Director of Admissions Dale Geiger Director of Student Residential Life i 13 Kevin O’Sullivan—Student Affairs Jack Grose—Business Manager Dan Adams—Center Director 14 Paul Davis—Public Relations Michael Pashion—Bookstore Manager wjs- David Landom—Computer Center Director Michael Pate—Library Director 15 Willie Jean Hambrick—Alumni Office Manager Nelrose Price—Registrar Dean Kelley—Economic Action Audris Hagerman—Accounts Supervisor 16 THOSE BEHIND THE SCENES 17 mmtt at «i s Lf y « «■ Z! . mS2S!L Mm , •: .. ” • mute mrmuZl • ««irty ■ «Ml «E . m jyy ' wwTSL js f —ltf —-.. mmShS ns - . l y «w « arSJ!9P ■ 5 -sSESS 5552S35S _ Mn « mam sm .«— warn mmZ . l HK id jjflj,, , rv , • • WWR m W - WC iT JS . ? • ■« ■• I ■ ■ . - ]MNB Ml ■ t,. . Living away from home, in a dorm, usually results in many phone calls between the two places m _ Hairstylist, Terry Gunter, visited the Towers lobby several times turning out various new spring styles. After a week of academic struggling, cafeteria food and social inter¬ action, many students are eager to depart for home. 112 Some dorm residents find sitting out of doors more relaxing than the con¬ fining walls of a dormitory room. As Richard “Frog” Walker demonstrates, the Greek culture is acquainted with only the finest cuisine! 114 Tug-of-war between big sisters and little sisters is indicative of both the love and the competition found within the Greek societies. Even Greeks must stoop to the menial tasks of everyday living. Of course, everyone knows the Greeks have private tables in the cafeteria. 115 . mu ■■-nrrrnirTrrrrTni—i--rn ' TlTOWirfaifffi WINTER 1977 During the 1976-1977 school year, Concord College students, faculty, and staff saw and experienced the worst winter in decades. An ever-present blanket of snow embraced the campus during much of the win¬ ter, resulting in fun-filled days of sleigh riding and snowballing. However, sub-zero temperatures, slick sidewalks and highways, cold dormitories, and cold classrooms accompanied the snow in its conquer of our college community. i As winter wore on, the threat of a natural gas shortage emerged. On January 31, 1977, Columbia Gas and The Federal Power Commission ordered the college to close immediately for a one-week period. President Freeman extended the break to two weeks, cancelling the spring break and adding one week to the scheduled ending of the spring semester. Operation of the college re¬ sumed on February 14. Sleigh rides, snowballs, cold classrooms, an energy crisis, and a sudden two-week break made the winter of 1977 a winter to remember. A WINTER TO REMEMBER 117 1 SNOW! IT FELL AND FELL AND FELL!
