p I N T R Concord College Athens, W. Va. 0 1970-CONCORD COLLEGE-1971 HAIL CONCORD COLLEGE, HATS OFF TO YOU EVER YOU ' LL FIND US LOYAL AND TRUE FIRM AND UNDAUNTED, ALWAYS WE LL BE HAIL TO THE SCHOOL WE LOVE, HERE ' S A TOAST TO THEE Concord College, the Campus Beautiful, located at Athens, West Virginia. Concord College. Is it just a name or a place, or does it stand for something more? I wonder how many students have ever stopped to ask themselves what Concord College is, or what it represents. Some students will say that Concord College is a place of higher learning, others will say that it is a place to escape from your parents for four years, and still others will say that it is a place to have fun at their parent ' s expense. All of these statements may be true, but beneath all of these ideas you will find that Concord College is simply people. Yes, Concord College is people, people from all corners of America and from all walks of life. Concord is a community within a community. Concord is the interaction of people with other people. People living together, people working together, people making friends, and people having fun. Without these people Concord would cease to exist. People are the living heartbeat of Concord College. They give it life. They provide the nourishment to make it pulsate, expand, and grow ever larger and larger. People are Con¬ cord ' s umbilical cord of life; cut the cord and Concord would be doomed to a slow, strangl¬ ing death. Yes, without people Concord College would cease to exist. Concord is truly people, and people are the greatest thing in the world. 3 ORIENTATION Summer is over, and it is time to go back to school. But it isn ' t like returning to high school. No, now we are entering into a completely new environment, a totally new experi¬ ence. Yes we have finished high school, but we are still students, only now we are college Freshmen. It seems strange entering into this new world. For the first time many of us have finally experienced a sense of complete freedom. We have reached adulthood and no longer have to be tutored and coaxed along by the stiff hands of our parents. For some of us it is the first time that we have been away from home, for others home is but a few miles or short drive away. We experience a sense of fear and anxiety, but we also feel the warmth of happiness and friendship. Now we are college Freshmen. We have much to do during this period of orientation. There are so many new faces to meet and new names to remember. Through our shyness and fear we somehow find that it is easy to make new friends, and we find that people from other sections of the country are really no different than we are. Orientation Week goes by quite rapidly. The schedule has been very busy. Some of the program was interesting, other parts were quite boring. At last it is time to go to the final activity of the week, the Orientation Dance. Oh the tortures of going through that recep¬ tion line. We expect to see stiff-collared professors glaring at us, often with a look of hate in their eyes. But you know what? They are really human, just like us! Orientation was an experience, some enjoyed it, others did not. Finally the week is over, the upperclassmen return, and we prepare to register for the first time. 5 REGISTRATION Oh the agony of it all! First they tell us to go to the Registrar ' s Office to pick up our packets, then we have to fill out all of those silly information cards. After all that trouble, of which we thought there could be no worse, they send us to the library. There we have to run around like complete idiots just to find that the classes we need have all been closed. After we have finally finished in the library, we drag our weary bodies and disheartened souls up the stairway to have our cards checked for the final time. This should be easy, but alas, the line is backed up for as far as the eye can see. We feel like crying. Finally we reach the entrance to the checking station. Nothing can go wrong now. A man comes to the door. He closes the door. What is he doing? What do you mean you are closing for lunch! Do you know how long we have been waiting in this line? Oh HELL! There is something mystical about those lines during registration. They just seem to go on and on. When you have gone through one line, you go immediately to the next one. The lines move slowly, like a giant serpent slithering through high grass. Finally you make it to the last lin e. You feel like you are about to drop in your tracks, but you continue for¬ ward. You continually press onward and onward until you reach the doorway of the Busi¬ ness Office. The Business Office, what an unusual place. There you find a group of very charming secretaries, happily smiling, and eagerly reaching out their hands to take your money. There seems to be something about money; the Business Office is drawn toward it just like a honey bee is attracted to nectar. Now that they have your money, they straighten out their record books and send you out the door. You are finally enrolled. You have be¬ come one of the 2,000 numbers filed in the records of Concord College. 7 tSss ' - ' i £■ ■■ ' fplr « M HOMECOMING At last! The first big fall event of 1970 is here. Homecoming, a weekend of fun and games. Somehow we never thought that we would see this day. It was rather disappoint¬ ing that the original date was cancelled due to our third annual water shortage, but that is past and Homecoming is finally here. And what a three days Homecoming was. Due to rain, the annual Powder Puff Football Game was cancelled, but that evening students enjoyed dancing to the beat of the Free¬ dom Band. Saturday, Homecoming Day, was also marred by rain, but the days events proved to be very successful, and despite the rain, everyone had fun. Rain ruined the parade on Saturday morning. By the time it reached Athens all of the floats were pretty much damaged. Winning the float contest was A Movement to Peace, made by the Theta Xi and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternities. Rain deterred students from attending the Homecoming football game against Salem College. However, the rain did not seem to interfere with the Concord Mountain Lions as they marched to a smashing 27-20 upset victory over Salem. This victory also made the 1970 Homecoming a giant success. During halftime of the football game, the name of the 1970 Homecoming Queen and her court was announced. Miss Sherry dayman was crowned Homecoming Queen at the ceremony. Miss Kathy Ross received 1st runner-up honors, and Miss Mary Miller received 2nd runner-up honors. Topping off Homecoming Day was the semi-formal dance in the Ballroom. Music was provided by the Mass Productions. Presentation of the Queen and her Court was the highlight of the nights entertainment. With all of the initial problems. Homecoming turn¬ ed out to be a great success. ii HOMECOMING QUEEN Miss Sherry dayman Miss Kathy Ross Miss Mary Miller HOMECOMING COURT Miss Diane Godfrey LTS HMLKn v T MY MtY IN DEDICATION Dr. James Shrewsbury Professor of English A man of integrity, dedicated to his job and to his students, a fore¬ runner in the advancement of higher education and the relativity of subject matter to student education. These are all a part of the character of Dr. Shrewsbury, but more important, he is a friend, someone to talk to when you need help, or just someone to talk and pass the time-of-day with. He possesses a sense of vitality, an interest in his students, and is always willing to give of himself and his time in order to help a stu¬ dent having difficulties. Dr. Shrewsbury is a wonderful person, and is truly a credit to Concord College. 19 K;r • ' i.lBfe , t dBl: IByfc v v ■ If Jt ■t-jk Take Her, She ' s Mine by Phoebe Henry Ephron 22 Principal . . Va. Tech 9-0. The Lions opened the season with 5 consecutive losses before sparking to life with the victory over Tech. This victory was short-lived however, when Fairmont upended the Lions the following week by a score of 40-12. Eager for action, and with victory in their minds, the Lions roared back to edge Salem 27-20 in the Homecoming Day game, and then trounced Glenville the following week by a 44-19 deficit. Finishing with an over-all record of 3 victories and 6 defeats, the Lions are looking forward to a great season in 1971. The whole idea of investor-ownership of electric light and power companies began when Thomas A. Edison and a group of in¬ vestors financed his first power plant more than 80 years ago. Since then, investor-owned companies like ours have become an integral part of America’s Free Enterprise system. That explains why today we have at our fingertips more electric power than any other country in the world. And it’s this same Free Enterprise system that puts at your fingertips greater oppor¬ tunity, greater expectation for success than can be hoped for by any other young people in the world. System.
