EDWARD WILLIAMS Assoc. Professor of Music lO A very friendly man ... so many go to him for advice, counseling, or just to talk ... his classes are filled with his humor, his kindness, and his unique knowledge of both music and life . . . how many nights has he spent making posters for campus activities . . . why do graduates always ask about him ... his brisk and sure steps have crossed so many of our lives ... he is a special part of Concord College . . . and he is a special part of her students. ALEXANDER FINE ARTS CENTER DEDICATION The class of 1970 was the Freshman class when ground was broken for the Alexander Center for Creative and Per¬ forming Arts; to these students has come the rare opportu¬ nity of seeing such an undertaking from beginning to com¬ pletion. With a great amount of pride the Center was dedi¬ cated this fall and a busy schedule of activities presented highlighted by the ninety-fifth annual commencement exer¬ cises. Included on the dedication program shown here were Dr. Ella Holroyd, first Music Department chairman at Con¬ cord College, United States Congressman Jennings Ran¬ dolph, College President Joseph Marsh, Jr., West Virginia Secretary of State John D. Rockefeller III, and Alexander Foundation trustee Mr. F. Basi¬ cally the ingredients are the same everywhere; the difference comes in the quantity and quality of each characteristic. Some people automatically stand out—not because they are better or more important but because they have something to say, some in¬ sight to give, some ability to be admired. Mr. Sam Hindman of the Charleston Daily Mail staff wrote about Sharon Fridley, a Concord freshman, she is an extraordinary young lady . . . radiating an excess of energy enabling her to maintain a multitude of interests ranging from being an infectious profes¬ sional football fan to an accomplished saxophone player. Sherry is blind but her handicap did not discourage her to the point of letting loose of her dream for a college education. Problems? Yes, many. But this is what makes her a special ingredient on campus. About walking across campus, Sherry said with a laugh, I take an occasional spill in the winter, but this helps me keep in shape! With the help of her readers Teri Clay and Mary Graber and a tape recorder studying is not a special difficulty. Sharon Fridley, a student with accomplishment and direction, is proud to be a member of Concord ' s student body, and Concord proudly claims her. 5 Patti McCraw Cecilia Gattuso THAT LIFE IS EVER LORD OF DEATH, AND LOVE CAN NEVER LOSE ITS OWN 16 Words are often hollow. Today is my moment and this is my story; I ' ll laugh and I ' ll cry and I ' ll sing. ' ' So goes the last verse of Today. It is a sad moment to take that last walk through the pines, to say the final good-by to a friend, or break the last tie with Concord. It is as I type this last page for the 1970 PINE TREE. We will all move on but, hopefully, not forget to take with us all the joys that are ours today. There have been so many helpful people, so many good times, so many invaluable experiences. It has been my pleasure and enjoyment to have a part in such an undertaking. May this annual bring many happy memories to you as tomorrow you look back on all the todays you spent at Concord College.
