MISS JUDI SMITH as Mary ' Tyrone, the mother H. C. Paul director of drama He threw away a career as a great Shakespearian actor for the sake of money-making-melodramatic roles; as the day of the a ction is a day of crises for his family, he sees their past relived and their future clearly outlined ... MR. JAMES ELMORE as James Tyrone, the father 60 He writes poems for a small town paper; the only hope of the family even though at times he desires death as much as the others; the report of tuberculosis reaches him but the hope of being cured makes him the only one not completely tragic . . . MR. SEAN CUNNINGHAM as Edmund, the younger brother He is lazy, drinks, and associates with women like Fat Vio¬ let; jealousy causes him to try and drag his brother down with him . . . MR. DANNY FLESHMAN as Jamie, the elder brother She is merely a maid in a summer home until she makes her first trip to the drugstore for Mary’s dope; she watches each of the Tyrones try to escape as she confronts reality . . . MISS VICTORIA RICHARDS as Cathleen, the maid Mary, while drugged, feels free to comment forcefully on the failings of others, yet she is never aware of her addiction. Whenever she blames anyone, as she is James here because his home for her is so different from her father’s, she returns to the line “but you can’t help what the past has made you” and forgives. If the play can be said to have a climax, it is when Jamie in a state of drunken¬ ness admits his jealousy of Edmund. From this point Ed¬ mund rises to a position of dominance and becomes the family’s only hope despite all Jamie has done to prevent it. i I Eugene O’Neill dedicated this play in 1941 to his wife Carlotta on their 12th wedding anniversary. He said, “I give you the original script of this play of old sorrow, written in tears and blood ... I face my dead at last and write this play—write it with deep pity and under¬ standing and forgiveness for all the four haunted Ty¬ rones.” The play is autobiographical. Mary won’t admit that Edmund is really ill with tuberculosis. She feels if he is it is a case of God’s punishing her. Here Mary declares to Edmund that she has lost her soul, and will only be whole again when her men lead good lives and she can stop feeling guilty. From the universities and colleges of the country, Concord was selected as one of the 191 semi-finals in the first American College Theatre Festival this year. Long Day s Journey Into Night was given as the competition play. The festival is spon¬ sored by the American Educational Theatre Assoc., the American National Theatre Academy, Friends of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian Institute, American Air¬ lines, and the Chrysler Corporation. Edmund, the younger son, is beginning to grow up and seeks his father. Eor the first time he understands him as a human. After joking, Edmund and his father talk seriously. His line, “Who wants to see life, as it is, if they can help it?” expresses the play’s domi¬ nant theme. Visit Kreton: I hope the battle hasn’t begun yet? Please take me to General Robert E. Lee. I have a message for him. Roger: Battle? There isn’t any General Lee staying here. Kreton: I seem to have made a mistake. You see, I was on my way to the Battle of Bull Run when some¬ thing went wrong with the machine. Ellen: Were you talking to Rosemary? Kreton: Oh, yes. We’ve had such a nice chat. Ellen: What did she say? Kreton: I wouldn’t dare repeat it . . . Besides, it would lose too much in the translation. CAST Kreton Gen. Ellen: A little diamond tiara . . . Conrad: Not on my farm! Honey, be simple! We could have such a wonderful life over there on the farm, and you’d be right next door to your father, who hates me . . . Bailiff (absent) . Orgon . ! (Orgon to Mariane) Tartuffe is sure of Heaven’s blessing And that’s the only treasure worth possessing This match will bring you joys beyond all measure Your cup will overflow with every pleasure. Tartuffe is no young dandy. But, still his person (Dorine, aside) Is as sweet as candy. (Orgon) One more bit of impudence and gall, And I’ll give that maid of yours a slap in the face Daughter, you shall accept, and with good grace. The husband I’ve selected . . . (Mariane) He hates the sight of me, that’s plain. I’ll go, and so deliver him from pain. (Vale re) She cannot bear my presence, I perceive. To spare her further torment, I shall leave. (Dorine) You’ll not escape, Sir; don’t you try it. Come here, you two. Stop fussing, and be quiet. You’re both great fools. Her sol desire, Valere, Is to be yours in marriage. To that I’ll swear. He loves you only, and he wants no wife But you, Mariane, On that I’ll stake my life. (Tartuffe) Madame, all things have worked out to perfection; I’ve given the neighboring rooms a full inspection; No one’s about; and now I may at last . . . (Orgon) Hold on, my passionate fellow, not so fast. I should advise a little more restraint. Well, so you thought you’d fool me, my dear saint! How soon you wearied of the saintly life— Wedding my daughter and coveting my wife! (Tartuffe) If you’re still troubled, think of things this way: No one shall know our joys, save us alone, And there’s no evil till the act is known; It’s scandal, Madame, which makes it an offense, And it’s no sin to sin in confidence. (Elmire) Open the door a little, and peek out; I wouldn’t want my husband poking about. (Tartuffe) Ah, Brother, let him speak: you’re being unjust. Believe his story; the boy deserves your trust. Why, after all, should you have faith in me? How can you know what I might do, or be? Is it on my good actions that you base Your favor? Do you trust my pious face? Ah, no, don’t be deceived by hollow shows; I’m far, alas, from being what men suppose; Though the world takes me for a man of worth, I’m truly the most worthless man on earth. (Madame Pernelle) No. no, a man of such surpassing piety Could not do such a thing. You cannot shake me. I don’t believe it, and you shall not make me! 7 CC The last spin of the proportion-dial has been made, the last picture has been cropped, and layout and copy decisions are final. And believe it or not, but I’m still using the same 59 j; eraser and broken ruler with which I started last fall. It seems impossible that in about five minutes this page will be typed and the ’69 Pine Tree will be completed. As I sit here, I try to remember where the time has gone. 1969 was a good year for Concord and the challenge to capture its many moods was not an easy one. No one except the Pine Tree editor could realize the extent of Concord activity. Many thanks to Mr. Buckey, our advisor, for always being on call. Jim Graham, Mr. Grubb, Dave Fouracre, and Bill Grinstead—you’ll never know how much your pictorial coverage of the year is appreciated. Barbara, Vera, and Fran—you were great! There was never a bunch that could go out as much, scream as much, poke in as much food, sleep as much, laugh as much, cram as much, or love life as much. For Seniors it was giving Tuesdays up to Seminar, pre¬ senting Senior recitals and art shows, and meeting that final challenge, the Profes¬ sional Block. They held their heads up to a hard world with determination that Scarlett O’Hara in the ’69 release of “Gone Fith The Wind” could only match; they questioned the marriage of Jackie Ken¬ nedy; and they were the first to bow their heads as the flag went to half mask honor¬ ing Dwight Eisenhower. After years of keeping step now they break rank and go their own ways. Rod McKuen puts it best when he says, “There are golden apples to be picked. And green hills to climb. And meadows to run when you’re young.” 178 Roscoe Barber Tom Barry Sandy Bectel Henry Blessing Madge Arrington Hariett Asbury Martin Atwood Dianne Arrington 179 Richard Bourne Sallie Bowers Joe Bond Janies Bowling Victor Bridi Tom Briers Vicki Brackenrich Tom Broderick Claude Brooks Nancy Brown 180 Glenn Burtner fit! Education-Social Studies; Sigma Tau Gamma, Track 207 i 208 JuhicM They are the ones who, because they suddenly realize there isn’t a long time left, begin to notice and mark down any significant happening of the year. They remember classes being dismissed because of no water on October 10 and 11; they remember running out in the first snow on October 26; and they turned out in full force to see what the police were doing at Concord on the April 18 Ad Building bomb scare. It was a year of being cocky on the outside and trembling on the inside, remembering all the tales of things that happened to hold back graduation. They were the ones who were continually figur¬ ing hours and quality points. They laughed at the tears of Seniors but, although they didn’t notice and probably wouldn’t admit it, they weren’t the carefree students they had been the previous two years. “To everything there is a season . . .” SAMIR ABOULHOSN SUSAN ADAMS PHYLLIS AKERS WILLIAM ALBIZATI DIANA ARNOLD RAYMOND AUSTIN Princeton, W. They danced to the number one song, “Hey Jude”, dared the predicted Hatchett Man to come close to their dorm, and campaigned for presiden¬ tial and gubernatorial candidates. In Greek their name means “wise fool” and some¬ times, no doubt, the name fits. It must have been one of them who sat in the plastic greenery and caused the TV lounge to be closed; it must have been on of them who selected November 4, a day filled with rain, for the anti-Viet Nam War rally; and it could have been no less than a Sophomore who answered the question, “Have you read Eric Fromm?” with, “Eric from where?” The Sanskrit—“Look well to this day, for it is life . . . for yesterday is only a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well-lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.” £cfthcwreA GLENN ABLES PATRICIA ABSHIRE JERRY ADKINS LINDA AKERS JAMES ALBERT BILL ALEXY JAMES ALLEN STEVE ANNIE RALPH ANTROSIGLIO BARBARA ARNOLD DEBORAH BAILES JUDY BAILEY KAREN BAILEY LINDA BAILEY MARY BAILEY BYRON BALDWIN RONALD BALL LARRY BARBER LOUIS BARDI DENNIS BARLEY THERESA BARNETT RICHARD BASHAM CHARLES BEACH LARRY BEAVER JOYCE BEGGS JIM BEHA LINDA BEHAN JOANNE BERDINKA ROBERT BERLINER BONNIE BERZITO ROBERT BEYMER REBECCA BLANKENSHIP BECKY BLEVINS ANNE BOBBITT ALMEDA BOOKER ROGER BOOTHE GEORGE BOWLING CLEO BOYLES JEAN BRAGG HUGH BREEN ROBERT BRONCATELLO BARBARA BROTHERTON PETER BROWER MARCIA BRUMBACH VICKI BRUNSCHWYLER MARTHA BUFFINGTON JANE BULES DEBORAH BULMER CAROLYN BURGE KAREN BURKS BARBARA BURTON CHAMPE BUTLER LINDA BYARS FRANCIS CALL THOMAS CALLIS ANTHONY CAMBRIA NANCY CAMPBELL MICHAEL CARDINALE PAMELA CARROZZA KAY CARTER RICHARD CARTER ALVA CASSIDY STEVE CASTELLI JOHN CAVENDISH CHARLES C.IHULA BOBBIE CLARK Bluefield, W. Va. jreAkmeH It’s the most nervous feeling as you enter the mapled lane fronting Concord for the first time. But soon receptions, lectures, dances, and other Frosh Orienta¬ tion programs force the upset stomach to leave and a new year begins—really, a new life begins. They were forceful this year, at least in the beginning, with their student action groups. They are the Cen¬ tennial Senior Class and they seemed to have a special pride in Concord. When Huntington High and Oak Hill were fight¬ ing for the state basketball crown their minds returned to former days of school letters, charm bracelets and band festivals, but with the help of pink slips their new world became a reality. Awards day saw them take citizenship, scholastic, and popu¬ larity awards; perhaps it was at that time they realized the future of Concord lay in their future. “Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not.”—Robert Kennedy CHRISTINE ABOIA HAFEZ ABOULHOSN FREDERICK ABRAMS NANCY ACKERMAN ROY ADAMS STEVE ADAMS WILLIAM AGNEW KATHERINE AIELLO MARY AKERS JACQUELYN ALEXANDER RONALD ALLEN KATHY ALLPART HAROLD ARBAUGH PATRICIA ARNOLD CLENNIE ARTHUR DAVID ATKINS ROBERT ATKINS JUDITH AYERS FRANK AYLOR JOHN BAILEY JUDI BAILEY RICHARD BAILEY JEANIE BALL JOE BALL LORELLE BALL SHARON BALL DAVID BARILLA CAROLYN BARR SHARON BARTLETT CONNIE BASHAM JOHN BASS ANDREW BASSO PAULETTE BEALE EARL BEAM DANNY BEASLEY BILLY BECKETT JAMES BECKETT PATRICIA BELCHER WILLIAM BELCHER JERRY BENSON BARBARA BERG DEBORAH BIAS ALICE BIRD SANDRA BIRD WESLEY BIRD LINDA BISHOP CONNIE BLANKENSHIP IRMA BLANKENSHIP MICHAEL BLANKENSHIP DENNIS BLEVINS LINDA BLEVINS MARCIA BOHN GILBERT BALLING LYNN BONDURANT PHIL BOOTH LYNN BORRIE PAMELA BOYD PENNY BRADBF.RRY ERNEST BRAGG EDWARD BREZEK JOHN BRONAUGH BRENDA BROWN KEITH BROWN ROSIE JANE BROWN ROYCE BROWN VALERIE BROWN Edgewater, N. The Englishmen a c The Drifters Little Anthony and the Imperials The Grandeurs Peaches and Herb The Villagers Gary Puckett and the Union Gap The Tempests It happens suddenly To look back it doesn’t seem like a planned event It just happens One morning parents awake to find their child has gone to college. The emptiness of home the vacated room the missing presence at the table all reinstate the fact that the child has grown. Spring-past brought high school plays a Senior letter graduation and the yell, “I’ve been accepted at Concord!” Parents for a moment are just as proud just as excited and just as happy, but as September draws near the realization that for the first time they are being separated from their child causes gnawings. For parents of Frosh it’s a new feeling; For parents of upperclassmen it’s a feeling experienced again: tears—not quite as many but just as wet. The student becomes involved in campus activities adjusted to classes and acquainted with a new life of almost absolute freedom while the parent evaluates himself and the values, ideals, and standards he attempted to instill. For the first time in almost twenty years the telephone becomes silent the music on the piano stays arranged the walls stay clean and a surplus of milk develops. And there is the knowledge that all things must end and shade into new beginnings. From “24712” comes “Excuse me for not writing sooner . . . Concord is great . . . studying is depressing . . . send my tie Dad borrowed for the trip here . . . hope my grades are okay . . . expenses are more than planned ... we lost the game by one point . . . there is this girl ... it makes me homesick to write . . . gotta run. ” Attending Concord is a privilege and each time a card, form, or information sheet calls for “Parent or Guardian” the name inserted is the person who made this opportunity possible. The words “Thank you” don’t seem to say enough; “I love you for this” doesn’t sound meant, Yet each parent must know. And so a page in the ’69 PINE TREE carries the message. 231 ...
